There is a long-standing feature where emoticons don't show if you are quoting a picture, something like that.

Is that what you are referring to?

Testing this with being the first item in a line and after a word with no space:thumb: or with a space after the period.  :thumb:

This has been around for a long time.

I think if someone inserts two pictures, an emoticon between the pictures will not render as an image, but one after the second picture will.

They way I've chosen to tackle this problem is simply do the right-click on the emoticon i want to use and then copy the URL, afterwards just paste it as an image.
