I keep mine as tidy as possible, only things I have displayed at all times are the volume control and the wifi access thing. Everything else is hidden (bar the time etc)... Oh and I have my taskbar set to smaller icons so I've got more desktop space, like a boss.

I would say that mine is a tad too big.

Maybe a dozen pieces, including date and time, after boot-up.

It is rare that I have more than half a dozen additional others open, even after hours of use.

It is my habit to open programs to use them, and close them when I finish. I generally prefer to open and close a program a dozen times during a day than to simply leave it open. Same with internet tabs.

Perhaps I am too concerned with "lean and mean" but when I started working with computers (1984) one of my instructors bought a new computer. In a "bragging" conversation, he told one of the other instructors that he had 384K of RAM. "Three hundred and eighty-four K! That is obscene!" was the reply.

Yeah, I'm pretty much the same, installed it back for CoD3? becasue thats what the cod players used back in the day. I find it kinda useful for having the time and fps up in games... i should probably use something else instead, but then WHO WILL TRACK HOW MUCH OF MY LIFE IS WASTED IN SC2?! :P

What does it do?

It's like Steams ingame stuff, cept it works with nearly all games, and tracks the time spent in said games;

You know you can change steams interface right?

I use Windows 8 Skin (http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2618944).

I still don't like it the way it's set up, not just the aesthetics.

I prefer to have the fewest number of background processes running, thus keeping the system tray as empty as possible.

Hmmm, I'm pleasantly surprised - this was far from what I expected to read from microsoft windows.

Well, when your computer is 15 years old, you tend to want it to run as lean as possible! So I try and keep the system tray nice and clear.

But for my desktop...that's another story.

I don't have a tray... Well unless you count i3wm's bar - it just has the time and some other basic info.

And wow - Xfire. I haven't used that since the old BF2 days. It's probably been like 7 years...

Let's see... Redshift (like f.lux, but open-source), Pidgin (IM client) and Audacious (music player); the rest is system stuff: a clipboard manager (y'know, I can have like 10 things in the clipboard), a list of connected devices (like external HDD) and the rest is hidden.
