Title: US Supreme Court Strikes Down Contraceptive Mandate
Post by: microsoft windows on Mon, 30 June 2014, 10:47:02
Looks like Hobby Lobby has won its lawsuit against Kathleen Sebelius and the federal government over the contraception mandate included in Obamacare. How do you feel about that court decision?

so... wait i don't get it..  businesses can opt out of providing contraceptives?

but.. obama care was per the individual? is it not?    is this a section of obama care that covers differently for a company?

The ACA requires that all individuals purchase health insurance, unless they are provided it through their employment.

In this case, the employer (Hobby Lobby) opted out of paying for contraceptives as part of their coverage plan. The ACA included contraceptives as an item that can be provided without patient co-payment, but what Hobby Lobby wanted was for their employees to not be able to obtain contraceptives through the company insurance.

couldn't the individual just get their own insurance?  I don't see why Hobby Lobby would bother.. unless they assume they're only hiring completely inept 100% internet-illiterates..

Typically company health insurance costs less than private insurance, due to discounts given by the insurance company. The individuals can get their own insurance, but generally company health insurance is considered an incentive to the job. If the company's health insurance is denying the individual certain features (to the point where they have to pay for their own insurance), then that's sorta like getting a paycut - so the individual should weigh whether to continue working for that company or not.

Hobby Lobby bothered because they wanted to make a religious statement. To them, contraceptives are against their religion so they do not want to pay for health insurance that covers it.

I never understood why an employer should be responsible for paying for your contraceptives.  Seriously.  So you want to have sex, but not make babies.  Ok.  Go and buy yourself some contraceptives.

If the government wants people to have free contraceptives, they should pay for it, not make an employer pay for it with their health care plan.  Allow people to get them mail ordered or put them in every government office or whatever.  But how does it makes sense to force employers to pay for contraceptives?

Sigh.. that's so dumb.. don't they realize that the majority of the educated world does not Actually believe in Christianity and merely adhere to it as a social-club?

I've met a lot of social Christians, but they are certainly a minority where I used to live (in the bible belt).

Agreed. there are good ways to address this issue and this is certainly one of them.

let's hope this doesn't (ironically) derail into a religion thread

welp

good thing most major cities provide free condoms

just fix sex-ed and this is less of a problem than it is

even so, it's a pretty big problem

The title sounds like a bigger deal than it really is. The reality is some "closely held" companies can squirm out of providing contraception on religious grounds, but it only referred to morning-after pills, which could be ideologically argued are along the lines of abortion. This ruling didn't have effect over preventative contraceptives.

This won't go much further on a wider scale. A few privately held companies with religious owners might do this on ideological grounds, but public-limited companies won't be able to, and really no large corporation in their right mind would want to go down this road because the PR backlash is going to massively outweigh the minuscule financial savings from not providing certain contraceptives as part of their insurance plan.

It has nothing to do with religion. It is only about money. Hobby Lobby does not want to pay for health care.

Birth control is a health care issue, just as is pregnancy. It took a long time for pregnancy to be accepted as a natural aspect of life rather than a disease-like condition. Almost all health care providers pay for Viagra.

And all 5 justices supporting this measure were men.

PS - I am a man and a father. Sex and babies are a part of life. (just don't tell my 16-year-old daughter that)

someone mentioned religion and we know how much people love railing on religion, that's why i said that
