Title: 122-key Model F (6110347) $139 BIN (missing space bar)
Post by: 1391406 on Thu, 10 July 2014, 12:40:06
I ran across this (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Very-Rare-IBM-6110347-Model-F-122-Key-Keyboard-/251584304366?&_trksid=p2056016.m2518.l4276) today. $139 BIN for a 122-key Model F. It's missing the space bar, hence the price is a bit too steep, in my opinion, even for a rare 122-key variant.

Those spacebars are hard to come by. On the other hand, there are simple mods that allow standard M spacebars to be used.

Price is too high imo. Nice keyboard, but worth a little less, more so since it's missing the space bar.

I got my F-122 with a space bar from this seller a few months back. It wasn't listed as buy it now, and I got it for $105 + free shipping. Maybe he/she expected it (or other similar listings) to go for a higher price?

Either way, this person knows how to ship stuff. The entire thing was encased in thick styrofoam blocks cut to fit the board with lots of tape, no case shattering for whoever buys this.

That alone is saying something. These cases are fragile and I have had more than one ruined en route.

I bought a 122-key Model F from him a couple of months ago and can confirm this is how he packed mine, as well. Very impressive and professional. If I'm not mistaken, he wrapped the keyboard in cellophane.

What is it with F122 spacebars?  How come so many of them go missing?

They are the same size and shape as M spacebars, but the stabilizer wires are much thinner. There are plastic hold-down clips that force-fit into the plate, and the opening will not fit a Model M wire.

You can easily make new tabs to fit M wires, or wcass has an even cleaner method where the ends are sleeved.

I think it's just spacebars in general: it's the most used key on the keyboard. When I was about three, I used to have lots of fun pulling off and rearranging the keycaps on our 1391401. Later on, I narrowly avoided breaking the spacebar trying to pull it off and figure out how it worked.
