Title: Ram cost more than CPU ?
Post by: tp4tissue on Thu, 10 July 2014, 22:33:05
Fff this.. man..

I just spent $75 on 8gb of 2400 ram  for my $60 Cpu ...(http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/073.gif)

hahahahahahahaha....   it's that or wait like a month, and then maybe some 1600 ram comes up with a $15-30 rebate..

freakin'' ram prices...

this is almost as bad as harddrive prices sticking to $90

Just wait until you see the prices on new DDR4 16, 32, 64...128GB modules. Plus, when DDR4 goes mainstream next year or so expect DDR3 to go up even more like DDR2 did.

You must have a pretty ****ty CPU then. Also, $75? I paid $80 for 16gb Corsair RAM.

That's gonna be a LONG time.. at least 2-3 years..  I can't worry or feel anything about that since I needed ram "Now-ish"

One generation old modules tend to cost more than newer ones. It is a common trend.

I suspect the transition will be fairly slow. I'd give it another year before DDR3 prices begin to spike... especially considering they're pretty high to begin with.

One interesting catch:  I don't think anyone's offering a transitional alternative.  For the last step, you could run a Phenom II in an older board with DDR2, or configure the Intel P4x/G4x chipsets with either DDR2 or DDR3.  This meant the market could move in "half steps" depending which was cheapest... with this, it's everything or nothing.

I think that's cuz there's no point to switch to ddr4 except for servers..

You and I have no use for more bandwidth..

gonna browse my firefox faster.. wh00t..

$75 for 8GB @ 2400MHZ?!?!? WHAT??!!? BTW, what processor do you have? lol

Skylake is supposed to come out in Q3/Q4 2015, so that is like 1ish years. When that comes out DDR4 will be mainstream as that's what kind of ram it's supposed to have. The new 2011 refresh 9 series boards will support it like now whenever they become available.

yea but unless skylake has > 15% ipc improvement,  only n00bers would buy one..

this ram is going in my recent pentium rig..

I am going to name it, super-novice..  after the class from RO..

parts list

Pentium g3258_ $60

MSI z97 pc mate_ $40

Zalman Optima cooler_ $10

Antec P280_ $40

Corsair CX430_ $15

Crucial 240gb ssd_ $100

Kingston Beast 2400 2x4gb_ $75

$340 Total.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/info-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862510)

I got an old 4870 gpu to throw in there..  should run most games on medium settings @ low res...

This was about 2 years ago, maybe less. They were Corsair Vengeance DDR3, no rebates. Dunno what the speed is, the box doesn't say.

It's a different world Today turtle..   2x4gb is routinely $75-100   due to the cellphone market drying up supply of memory ics.

and that $75-100 only gets you 1600mhz most of the time..

Why not just overclock your own RAM modules? I recall those super low profile Samsung ram sticks overclocked like crazy.

I personally clocked my 1866 sticks to 2133 @ CL10 without sweat. Plus, anything past 1866/2133 has hardly any benefit, since clock times start getting loose.

2400 sticks paired with Pentium just sounds so wrong. I know the anny pentium OC's like crazy, but it's just the name and numbers don't match.  :p

1600 is the cut off for nominal performance..  1333, there's a penalty

2133 is the cut off for + 2 to 7% from 1600

the reason to buy higher binned ram is more due to quality than performance..

this is true, quality of DDR3 ram's been dropping in the last 18 months.
And for the dude who brought up the low voltage sammy ram modules, they were sold for like 6 months and then went DOA.
They also skyrocketed to like $75+ for a 4GB stick towards the end of their availability.
Irony because originally they sold like $30 for a 4gb stick

Yea.. I bought my fair share of "discount" ram back during ddr and ddr2 days..

I got f-ed up the butt really hardcore by OCZ and Adata..

That explains it. But how high are you planning to clock the RAM?

I'm just gonna throw it in @ stock 2400mhz xmp settings...

If I can... I might increase the Vring to get 1T command rate.. (i doubt this will be possible though) on such a budget build...

Worst case scenario, I'll run it 1600 with jedec 999,  though it will make me slightly more depressed about ram.. (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/embarrassed2-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862502)
