Title: KTOD - Ideal keycap set shape
Post by: CPTBadAss on Fri, 18 July 2014, 12:05:27
I've been seeing some chatter lately about custom keycaps. P3tc0ck has his flat cap project (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60531.0). Cribbit was talking about a metal and plastic hybrid. (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60739.msg1404968#msg1404968). And at Keycon, I saw that Kurplop's Portaplop (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=60617.msg1400940#msg1400940) had some custom made Alps keycaps.

What's your ideal keycap shape and profile?

For me, I'd love to see Cherry profile double-shot POM with the raised line or dot on the FJ keys. I really like the Cherry profile, it works nicely for me except for those scoops. And I like how smooth the POM caps feel but I don't like the lasered look. I don't know if you can doubleshot POM (I don't think so), but that doesn't mean I can't dream :P.

I like cherry profil also, but i think some thick PBT feels better than POM imo. Both are good so it wouldn't matter as long as it's not stupid scrubish-scrub ABS. Obviously raised line on FJ, not dots.

Double-Shot obviously for them to have eternal legend.

Also i'd get them spherical for accuracy, i like functionnality over aesthetics, and even if it doesn't look as good, it's still better when you must rely on finger movements. Not too deep though.

Also, Stepped Caps Lock is better, way better imo.

Exclude Menu key. lol who uses Menu (replace it for a programming key like the poker for superior, power-user results)

Another vote for Cherry profile with raised lines on F and J. I like low, contoured profiles, DCS is okay, but the bottom 2 rows have too steep an angle, Cherry is just right.

I'd also love to see some nice thick Cherry profile POM with legends that aren't raised. Perhaps some light colour with dyed legends or doubleshots if possible.

POM is certainly my favourite keycap material.

+1 for Cherry profile with the scooped FJ keys.

Stepped caps lock, 1x backspace and a flipped spacebar (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=39776.0) for the best experience..

I've become a huge fan of the SA profile, which probably harkens back to my days with the Commodore 64 to explain why I like to so much.

That being said, one of the biggest appeals of the SA profile is the fact that it's so thick. Having recently acquired the Charred Orange set from The Originative, I can now see what all the fuss is with people wanting sets from GMK. The thickness and the Cherry profile are quite nice as well. I've begun rotating between a couple of boards throughout the day, to help with limiting RSA issues, so being able to enjoy both profiles is really a nice treat.

Signature Plastics SA or GMK Cherry ABS double shots with scoops are my preferred. If you forced me to pick one, I'd have to go with the SA. I'm completely smitten with Penumbra (https://www.flickr.com/photos/compactkey/14381850768/in/set-72157645087783729/).

I always wondered about sideless keys.

I wondered if I would like DSA profile, and found out with the Granite set that I really don't mind it!  Then I realised (reading what someone had written on GH) that I had been using Apple aluminium for a couple of years, so I was used to a flat layout already.

However I would say I still have a preference for Cherry profile.

I don't mind OEM profile, such as Tai Hao keycaps, but probably still a slight preference for Cherry profile.
