Title: Coding programs/applications.
Post by: Fragil1ty on Fri, 18 July 2014, 21:43:04
So, what coding applications do you use?

When it comes to my work, I tend to only really use my Mac so that I can get the most use out of it, as it's well, it's a work machine and on that Mac I use Coda 2 + Transmit.

I've tried getting used to Windows programs such as Sublime text etc, but I just don't like them, they just don't have the same feel as Coda, Coda is perfect for what I do to be honest. (Built in FTP, Terminal, Live view etc) and please don't even mention Dreamweaver, Please NO!

So yeah, what do you use?

Windows: Eclipse, ConTEXT, Far Manager (built-in editor), Delphi IDE.

Linux: Eclipse, elvis (vi clone), vim (another vi clone).

Mac: TextWrangler, vim, Eclipse.

Still looking for a good cross-platform editor.

you've already got one listed in 2 out of 3 of the platform lists you posted... you just need to add it to your windows list of applications too ;-)

I always thought Coda and the other apps by panic really exemplified what Mac applications were supposed to be in form and function.  I'm currently doing .NET, so those days are behind me.

daily use:
- Visual Studio
- Vim
- Sql Server Management Studio

frequent use:
- chrome developer tools
- notepad++ (mostly just for tidy since I have not investigated a vim replacement)
- fiddler
- powershell for tasks that either must be done through powershell or are significantly easier through powershell

Having used elvis for so long, vim seems odd.  It does not react how I'd expect it to react sometimes, and my coding style is too heavily oriented around the idiosyncrasies of elvis.

Tried emacs - too many keystrokes to get some things done.

emacs = Esc Meta Alt Ctrl Shift :p

I tried to use an open-source application called 'Brackets' but it lacks a lot of the functionality that I was looking for and because of that I couldn't use it on my Windows machine, it also wasn't as fluid as I wanted it to be and it didn't have a dedicated preferences pane for looks/design/font changes and so on, was pretty nice in terms of aesthetics though.

Speaking of brackets, I use a plug in for Eclipse called Bracketeer which is really handy.

I tried so darn hard to love Eclipse, but I always ended up going to other IDE's. As of right now I get to play with IAR Embedded for programming an 8051 based CC2541! To say I'm a little overwhelmed at the moment is an understatement!
