Title: Vintage computer museums
Post by: vivalarevolución on Thu, 24 July 2014, 08:53:03
So does anybody know of any vintage computer museums in the USA besides the ones I have listed below?  I've got the bug and may visit one or two.

Computer History Museum - Mountain View, CA
The Intel Museum - Santa Clara, CA
American Computer Museum - Bozeman, Montana
The Topeka Computing Museum - Topeka, Kansas
Vintage Computer Festival - Annual vintage computer event
The Personal Computer Museum - Brantford, ON, Canada.

Well, I was hoping for suggestions that would not involving disappearing into someone's personal lair.

It's only open like once a month for 6 hours.  Next time is August 16th.  It is the closest museum to me that I know of, a brisk 7 hour drive, not counting whatever delays I encounter with the border crossing.

That's a little rough for you, but given the sporadic nature of its openness, it could make a nice planned weekend or something.

It's only about an hour and a half from me.

Nah, I can do a 7-hour drive without a problem.  I can get there with one tank of gas.  I probably would go in August, but the preceding weekend is the International Typewriters Convention in Milwaukee, and two straight weekends of long car travel is a little hectic for my sensibilities.

The September date looks promising, though.

If anyone goes to the Mountain View Museum hit me up. I'm basically always free to go on 45 minute's notice. If you know anyone who works at Google get them to come too since they get everyone half-off.

We should definitely plan a trip, post Kiibohds meetup maybe?

In the news,

Jewel Thiefs heist of royal museums success; overcoming all the latest security technology from lasers to moisture proximity scanners...

GHers heist of vintage computer museum fails miserably as the overloaded sachel of keycaps burst, where sound of falling keycaps from great heights caught the attention of a single thick-glasses-ed security guard who was eating his late night burrito...

We could probably have a Kiibohd meetup in the CHM atrium assuming we can convince HaaTa to bring one or two keyboards only.

The typewriter convention is August 8-10.  Registration ends on Sunday.   A little pricey, $130 to register, but worth in my mind, considering what will be available.

Yep, that's my busiest weekend coming up, by far.  At least 4 different things going on.   :(

I could certainly make quite a few donations to a vintage computer museum. Got a Commodore 64, several early Apple machines, along with a computer running Windows 3.1.

The Vintage Computing Fest took place in New Jersey in April and there is one in the southeast as well.  Also, there is a museum in Rhode Island, I think.

It's not in the USA, but I live close to the national Computing museum in the UK. It's roughly a 20 minute bus ride from where I live. It's not all vintage computing but they do have the Original Enigma Machine that was used in the 1940s. I actually haven't been - i really ought to go.

I might plan on going there later this year.  Probably September. Perhaps we should organize a Geekhack trip for the one day a month they are open.

Goodwill computer (https://www.facebook.com/gwcomputermuseum) museum in Austin, Texas.

It's just one medium sized studio space, but they have some interesting hardware on display and it gets switched out regularly I think.

September or October looks most likely.  I would like to get up there before the long, cold, dark northern winter sets in.

I have been to the Computer History Museum in Mountain View, CA and I had a blast.  It is very IBM centric,  They had a lot of their machines from the 1920's and on.  It was very focused on the OLD history of computing, Pre-1970's.    I loved it.
