Title: Help with fountain pen?
Post by: minho on Sat, 26 July 2014, 22:34:14
So during my trip to China, my grandparents got me this fountain pen from a company called Fuliwen. I believe the model is Fuliwen 2001, but I can't find any information about it (and there were no instructions included either).

If anyone can shed any light as to what kind of ink I should get for it (cartridges, a bottle, etc.), I would greatly appreciate it! Any basic care tips for fountain pens would be nice as well (but those I can find online too. I just can't seem to find any pens with internals like this one).

looks like a decent aeromatic filler with a fine steel nib (great ball iridium tip), can't see the feed?-- nothing to extravagent

take it apart again and soak the nib unit, feed, filler in water over night with a drop a dish soap

take out and let dry for a couple hours and check out "noodlers inks"

I'm not completely sure I understand what you're saying. do you mean I should take this component http://i.imgur.com/n7M6jDt.jpg in water with a drop of dish soap over night? Is this like "breaking in" the pen?

The crimson part contains the aerometric filler. Essentially it's a sac that suctions in ink through the nib. The Silver part in this picture

Contains your feed and nib and is referred to as a whole as the section.

When you first get a fountain pen, new or not, you should always flush the pen. This means you submerge the nib in water with a bit of dish soap. There's other ways to clean and flush the pen but this is the easiest way. For new pens, this is to clean out any machining residues or chips. For old pens, it's to clean out old inks and whatever else is in there.

What I would do is, reassemble the pen. Then squeeze and squirt out water like 5-10 times. Then take the pen apart again and submerge just the section (the silver part in the picture above) in water up to the end of the nib (the metal part where you write with). Let it sit overnight. Then wipe it clean, then assemble it and squeeze in and squirt out clean water again.

So you don't need a converter or anything because that button you're pressing down on is a ink hold mechanism called an aerometric filler. To fill the pen, you'll submerge the entire nib up to the section then press on the bar like 5-6 times. Wipe it clean and write. I highly recommend Noodler's and Diamine Inks.

Check out these videos from Brian Goulet (http://www.gouletpens.com/Fountain_Pen_101_s/1135.htm) for more information on the basics of fountain pens.

Thanks all for replies!

Few final questions:

How is this ink (http://www.amazon.com/Noodlers-lubricating-Black-Bottled-Refill/dp/B005L3SWBA/ref=sr_1_4?s=office-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1406541818&sr=1-4&keywords=noodlers+ink+black)? Seems to have good reviews on Amazon, and as I am a little dubious of this pen's performance, I would rather have an ink that flows well. Not sure the color will matter too much to me - never had anything else before, so I don't really know what I'm missing out on.

Second, how often should I clean out the pen? I honestly have no idea how fast I will go through a tube of ink - should I just flush it every time I finish a tube of ink, and at least once a year? (whichever is more often?)

Hmm I'm no expert on the noodlers blacks but I've heard xfeather is nice. You won't need the eel's lubricating properties since you don't have a piston filler.

I usually flush my pens when I run out of ink. However, I write fairly often with my pens. Gouletpens recommends once a month as a general rule of thumb.
