Title: Help me pick out a new keyboard!
Post by: R. on Tue, 29 July 2014, 14:02:25
Want to buy a new keyboard! I've had a Qpad MK-80 (blue), Corsair K95 (red) and now a Steelseries 6Gv2 (black), and now I want a brown.
The reason I want a brown is because of the fact that I want a brown keyboard, the only keyswitch I haven't used. I am going to be moving in with two of my friends for the semester, so that rules out the blues. I'd like to buy one, but they're just too loud. I addition, I'd like to purchase some white, clear keycaps. I like the look of it, and to able to mess with friends that aren't very familiar around the keyboard.
If I don't get whites, I'll just get black ones.

So I am looking for a MX Brown keyboard that has a very clean look (no logos or such, preferrably).
I live in Norway, so the online stores that has a variety of keyboards are:

Komplett dot no
Maxfps dot no
&
Dustin dot no

Now, I've looked through em' and not found much to my interest. I found that the das keyboard silent was in stock on the swedish version of maxfps. The only thing is that the keyboard is glossy, which seems hard to keep clean, therefore, maybe will hopefully have some other websites/suggestions for me.

Thank you in advance
-R :)

...I want a brown keyboard, the only keyswitch I haven't used....

Red, Blue, Black and Brown are not the only keyswitches.... My favourite Cherry MX switch is Clears, but there are also Greens and Whites. Then there are few Alps-style switches and of course Topre.

What size keyboard do you want? Do you use the numpad a lot? If not, a TKL (TenKeyLess) board saves you desk space and allows the mouse to be placed closer to the normal typing area. More ergonomic.

If you just want a clean looking full sized board with Browns, there's this: https://www.komplett.no/cm-storm-quickfire-xt-keyboard-brown/795584
Or this: http://www.maxfps.no/tastatur/ducky/g2pro-mech-brown-nordic-mx-brown

If you want a TKL version, there's this: https://www.komplett.no/cm-storm-quickfire-rapid-keyboard-brown/795597

Or this if you want TKL with backlighting: https://www.komplett.no/cm-storm-quickfire-rapid-i-keyb-brown/819721

Here is a set of blank white keycaps that will fit all of the above keyboards (Nordic ISO layout), but it is from a Finnish store: https://www.teraset.net/product_details.php?p=9329#.U9iqt2OEyHs

I'm not sure how customs and import taxes will be for that.

Not to mention they don't seem to be available from online stores inside Norway....

Yeah, sorry for mentioning that. I am aware of the other keyswitches, it's just that they aren't really available here, so I haven't ever thought about it. Although they are on the heavy side (clears and greens, I think), which is not what I am looking for. I am not sure if I want tkl or not. I've always used the numpad, but I'm quite inefficient with them, so I guess that wouldn't really matter.

The CM Storm one looks quite good. But the thing that made me not thing about it too much is the red pcb/led (not sure). How visible would it be?
Would've definitely bought the ducky one, but they're not in stock, and they haven't been for over half a year or so.

I completely looked over the CM Storm QuickFire Rapid-i Keyb. Brown. Definitely considering this.

I want one that is quite robust (no nerd rage). But I like the feel of a really sturdy kb.

Thanks for responding :)

I'm gonna be buying a DXRacer chair from the maxfps site. The have a das with browns, so that would be convenient. And then I get just try and find cheap keycaps.

What are the downsides to the das except from a glossy body?

Does anyone know if the build quality of the CM Storm QuickFire XT is up to par with other brands? What is the reason they're so much cheaper than let's say Ducky over here?

Think I might just go with a black transluscent or just plain black keycap scheme instead.

I haven't heard of any problems with the XT boards. I'm typing on one right now which has tactile gray switches and WoB cherry doubleshots. I didn't have any issues desoldering the stock switches and soldering in new ones, although the board I have was a pre-release board.

I would say xt is a great starter board since it has standard layout and a replacable controller. I have also an xt with mxgrey and it was easy to solder.

the keys on the xt are printed and not leds right? If so, I think it will go with it, and this http://www.netonnet.no/art/data/gaming-og-spill/gamingtastatur/Ducky-Full111ABSkeycapsetlaser/187596.4171/

The f9 keycap is windowed if that was what you meant(and the rest is not backlit). Except for that there is nothing  special and the keycap set you linked will work fine.

I also found this; http://www.keyboardco.com/keyboard/swedish-finnish-filco-ninja-majestouch-2-nkr-tactile-action-keyboard.asp
It'll cost me aproximately the same as getting the CM keyboard and the keycaps. Maybe even less. Think I'll go with that. What do you think?
Pretty much everything I want. Clean design, quality and no print on top of the keycap.

Filco is good!  You can't really go wrong with a Filco :)

The filco also have a replacable controller and standard keycap sizes so there is only benefits compared to the xt.

I personally hate browns as they feel like reds with some dirt caught inside.
Lubed ergo clears are the best way to go IMO.

That's a nice board, but are you sure about the cost? It's from England, so you'll probably pay customs duties, unless the other Norwegian GH'ers have been pulling my leg about how customs and imports work there.

If you look around you should be able to find some Ducky PBT keycap sets. The ones you linked to are thin ABS (coated see-through caps so the backlighting shines through, just like the ones on a Ducky Shine 3), not much better than the stock keycaps on the CM. The new Ducky PBT caps especially are very nice (thick, with dyesub legends), WAY better than the ABS caps that come on the Filco or CM.
