Title: Alps is Wooden Rollercoaster, Cherry is Kiddie Ride, and Topre is Bouncy House
Post by: Binge on Tue, 29 July 2014, 14:42:13
Creating arbitrary metaphors for switch types is all the rage right now.  Being a trendy guy I needed to get in on this hot and exciting fad before I'm SOL and playing with Cabbage Patch by the time Power Rangers are in style if you know what I mean.

This is very on topic with keyboards.  I expect serious discussion to take place.

The bouncy house was always my favorite...this may explain a lot.

Why Justice League Jumpy House?

It was that or a monster truck.  Being the OP and partial to comics I took certain liberties.

Alps may be a wooden rollercoaster, but Windows 95 is the best keyswitch out of them all.

Must I do all of your thinking for you? This should be obvious.

You do belong on that wooden rollercoaster.  I think the thrill of cherry is good, but you aren't entirely satisfied.

Cherry is ALPS with a metal part missing.

Topre is ALPS with a metal part replaced by a (cheap) rubber part.

Yes, I'm biased but what I wrote is still true.

I like all three switches, and I would say this is pretty accurate. The wooden roller-coaster thing feels a lot better than it may seem.

If we were to compare the entertainment of these rides you'll notice the bouncy house forces children to have fun with soft materials while the kiddy ride is just part of a larger ride.  The wooden rollercoaster has it all.  Dependably scary fun.

If Alps are a jittery, clackety wooden coaster, then lubed MX linear switches are definitely a modern steel roller coaster: fast, smooth, and thrilling to type on.

You are Alps switches !
You often resist at first when pressured into things, but after an initial push you tend to go with the flow. Not too many people really take the time to get to know you. Most people have their opinion ready and will not even give you a fair chance at befriending them. But the few that do appreciate you will often stay and become friends for life. Where others dress fancy in all kinds of styles and flashy colors, you always dress understated. If you do switch styles, you prefer something retro.

Ok, sorry, I will stop now.

I dunno, I don’t think this is an accurate description of MX switches. In amusement park terms, I feel like they’re closer to a carousel. You won’t hurt yourself, you’ll just go up and down and up and down. Lots of blinking lights and cute animals for the toddlers. Ride any animal you want (lion, horse, dolphin, etc.) there are lots of choices, but they all feel pretty much the same. They have an old design that hasn’t changed since forever ago despite copious evidence that it’s mediocre for thrills. When people grow up, they grow out of them, and the only lingering attraction is nostalgia for an innocent childhood.

(I guess that’s what Binge was going for with the original “Kiddie Ride” metaphor, but I think a carousel hits a bit closer to the mark.)

alps must be ferris wheel: thrilling at first, with a million different kinds, and there's always that possability you'll kill yourself. Yet the junkies keep coming back for their fix and proclaim it to be the best ride of all.

Hall effect doesn't need a metaphor because it's a real mans' keyboard.

maybe cherry is bumper cars: everyone bashes heads on which is best but they're really stuck in a grimy cage of defeat.

Carousel eh?  I can't say you're wrong.  The Kiddy ride usually comes in many shapes and sizes but primarily works by bobbing up and down via a rigid mechanism.  I guess we are thinking along the same lines :)

@Dorkvader Hall Effect are,

I don't know, I feel like if alps is a wooden rollercoast, then cherry mx should be a modern steel one.

Ya know, more expensive, looks better, yada yada. But it's ride is too smooth to feel anything, and overall it just lacks the charecter of an old wooden one.

If you can get your Hall Effect designed and built at a reasonable price (preferably with Cherry MX top for easy keycaps), I'll support that project.
