Title: Least expensive way to try a full sized Kaihua switch keyboard in the USA...
Post by: Raftina on Fri, 01 August 2014, 10:20:19
(Not including going to the store and typing on the display Blackwidows or borrowing)

I think it's to put a Taobao request for a Keycool 104ii to Qtan (total cost probably 85-95 USD range with shipping, depending on whether I get the ABS or PBT version):  http://detail.tmall.com/item.htm?spm=a230r.1.14.5.Q8jdcG&id=36225434899

mechanicalkeyboards.com has the 108 for $106, free shipping.

But perhaps I am missing other choices.

Mechanicalkeyboards.com may not be the cheapest option for the particular keyboard that you are looking for, but after a recent buying experience with them I would highly recommend spending the extra few dollars and getting it from them.  Also, at least one of the guys there has been test driving a keycool board with the kailh switches you mentioned.  If you ask in their sub forum, I'm sure that they would gladly tell you about their experience thus far.  I've also heard rumblings from various members about upcoming reviews of the new keycool boards with the above mentioned mx compatible switches.

I can definitely say not to order from them because they sent me the wrong keyboard. I had ordered one with brown switches and they sent reds for whatever reason.

If you want to try the older style switches, the Rapoo V7 is a good option: http://www.amazon.com/FOME-Mechanical-keyboard-gaming-Windows/dp/B00FFZC03U

It has linear yellow switches. Apparently they're somewhere between Reds and Blacks in terms of spring strength.

The latest Keycools have the newer range of switches (with colours matching Cherry switches for the same type of switch). The Razer has some apparently newly co-developed switches (possibly with better quality control, too), so the Rapoo or Keycool may not be a good representation of what the Razer switches will be like.

I don't really get what you're trying to do, though. If you want to find out if the new Razer switches are any good, either buy a Razer or wait until enough people have had them for long enough for any problems to show up and for them to have a good idea of the performance and feel of the switches. Then hopefully some people will post a long-term report on them.

If you don't like the switches you can sell the Razer again for close to what you paid. I don't think you'd get much for a second hand Rapoo or Keycool with Kailh/Kaihua switches, so I would consider it too much of a risk.
