Title: Noppoo build quality
Post by: Novus on Mon, 04 August 2014, 03:09:20
How's Noppoo's modern build quality (the ones that are pbt/pom and don't have the delete awkwardly in the bottom)?

Is it comparable to other 60% vortex, poker yada yada?

I'm guessing it won't stack up against TKLS because of the size difference and well noppoo.

noppoo no pooo
noppoo number one

Could this post be moved to Off Topic? ;)

I guess mine should be, too, though, since I have no useful information for the OP. I am a bit on the fence about the Choc Mini. On the one hand I have heard it has nice thick POM keycaps, which is my favourite keycap material and the layout is great for gaming. On the other hand it has a 5.5x size spacebar which means it's impossible to find a complete replacement keycaps set and none of my other favourite keycap sets will fit. I have no idea about the build quality.

Found this on massdrop it kind of turned me off, but I'm still interested just for the POM.

I think it depends on the batch to be honest, but I got mine from Amazon and it's perfect. Of course it's the non-wireless and non-backlit model because I'm not a big ole ***got.

As far as I'm concerned, it goes like this:

Noppoo - Lesser build quality / better keyboard
KC - Better build quality / worse keyboard

I've had both models and used both models extensively and hands down in my opinion? The noppoo always wins.

Nope. I don't care about people insulting me on the internet. I just block it out now.

I have two KCs, and both of them are great. I've not had any problems with either of them.

Ah. No, I don't. So I guess I couldn't compare if that's what was being said. But I think they are a better build quality than other manufacturers I own.

Those are the coated white POM caps of the wireless version. AFAIK the black POM caps of the wired version don't have this problem, but I don't actually own one, so I can't say for 100% certainty. I would prefer the black POM caps myself anyway, because I hate the feeling of coated caps. I wanna feel the raw POM on my fingers, baby!

Have a Choc Mini from around 2012 and a Keycool 84 (backlit version if that matters) from around mid 2013.

Love my choc mini, but the spacebar is has considerable rattle (easily fully remedied with a dab of silicone grease.  2 bucks for a whole tube).  POM caps are so very nice.  Honestly one of my favorite parts of this board.

The KC84 feels much better IMO.  Also more standard cap sizes.

But I love my Choc mini and have no regrets with purchasing.  Though the factory solder job was kind of awkwardly done and desoldering was scary (almost lifted 3 of the pads/traces)

Edit: POM caps are king btw :)

I saw 3-4 posts on massdrop indicating that you can't turn off the backlight if you opt for them.
Lulz. These glaring design oversights.

IIRC, you can use Fn+down arrow to reduce the brightness. Just keep pressing until they switch off.

Lord Topre can't help you here... You're in Cherry MX land now. MUAHAHAHA!!

I would recommend to rather get the wired version. It has better keycaps, but no backlighting and is cheaper and there are1 less possible points of failure. Of course you better hope you like the spacebar, since it's irreplacable. It's a decent little board, though, and the unbacklit keycaps are very nice. <channeling Goldmember after an unfortunate injection molding accident> I love POOOOOOM!

Would you happen to know by chance if the wireless keyboards without the backlight addon come with the yucky powdered caps?

From what I can tell they're the same board with the same caps, just without LED's installed, but I don't truly KNOW. Maybe send a mail to Massdrop to ask their supplier?

That's the thing MD support isn't responding to my email...
I have found an Amazon listing for the none backlight 2M and in the pictures it shows the POM capes there is also a listing for the LED version with PU caps for $40 more. The cost jump matches up with MD. MD has a $30 price diff between LED and none LED, I'm thinking a good part of this cost might be the PU caps ~$35 seems rather expensive for just adding LEDs in a factory run.
On the other hand, there is a Newegg listing for what as far as I can tell is a 2m with MX Blacks and no LED, according to the pics it has POM but according to the description it has PU caps.

P.S. It this sounds a little incoherent or disjointed, I just woke up and am in bed, brain no work so good yet.

This newegg link right?

I think the first from asia edits are made by newegg's asian vendors/partners so there is a chance they just used a random stock image.

9 hours to go before the trigger needs to be pulled.
