Title: IBM Model M terminal conversion
Post by: Touch_It on Mon, 04 August 2014, 10:59:47
Working on converting my terminal keyboard to usb. (at work and do not have the model number).  Anyways yesterday I found a PS2 mouse I could salvage and bought a multimeter for a continuity test.  However using the pin layout diagram I initially misread it and messed up my wiring.  I however didn't realize this till after I plugged the ps2 port into my computer.  I know that to get it to work i need a teensy board but wanted to see if I could do anything in the bios.  My question is with my wiring wrong and plugging it in did i ruin my board.  Is there any way to test without buying a teensy board?

Thanks

I don't know the answer to your question, but it is a shame when they put power and ground as mirror images of each other on the plug. Presumably, you looked at the diagram for the socket end and assumed that it was the male plug end?

A teensy is a good thing to have around, even if this board is toast. It comes in handy when you find old gear.

You described pretty much my situation.  I did realize stuff didnt match up but was to late when I realized the picture was of the female end and not the male.  I will probably go ahead and purchase a teensy as I want to see how bad I messed up and I ultimately want to get a model F, be it terminal or  the original with the weird 83 key layout.  Ultimately it was 100% my fault for not being careful and reading better but it was a tad confusing albeit this is my first time doing this kind of thing with a keyboard and I'm years removed from doing electronics work.

My device ain't pretty but it is a very useful thing to keep in "the drawer"

pretty is a relative term.  In the traditional sense you are probably right.  But that's pretty awesome work and do find it pretty like I find IBM keyboards pretty.  Thanks for sharing.
