Title: Can someone do this solder LED mod for me? [Will Pay]
Post by: Aidenknives on Tue, 05 August 2014, 14:13:32
I want this LED under the switch instead of on the top like in the picture can anyone do this for me? I simply don't have the time to solder. Thanks!

Can't be done (easily at least). The PCB holes are set so that the switch sits that way.

Damn that is a bummer... :(

it can be done, you'll basically have to bend the prongs of the switch down, add some thin wire to the traces and solder it to the switch, then get a new LED and bend the prongs in a shape that it can go through the switch, bend under, and then go into the traces.

Yeah like I said, I am not gonna do that personally. But would love for someone else to!

its quite a bit of detailed work to get it right, I don't see anyone doing it for cheap, and something like this would require trial and error and a little risk. Whats so important with flipping just one switch?

You could order a new PCB from SPRIT and have me transfer the switches over. Being new to the assembly game, I would do it for free.  :thumb:

Only caveat is that it would take a while to get the receive the new PCB from the group buy. But definitely possible.

you could also drill holes in the PCB and patch with hook-up wire.

edit: would be really really tough since the USB port is there too.

I've seen a picture of someone doing the opposite mod that you're attempting. Basically, he had an aluminum novelty cap with eyes that required top mounted LEDs, but most Korean customs have the LEDs on the bottom.
The person soldered thin copper tape to the LED legs, and had the copper tape route around the exterior of the switch top. He then soldered a small SMD LED up top in the middle to still maintain compatibility with keycaps.

Should work the same for you. :)

I'm thinking that's the easiest way to do this (rather than rotate the whole switch). Magnet wire would also very likely work.

Also, you can route "around" the PCB instead of going through it. I checked and there's room.

Copper tape would be the best way, Feng's KMAC LE used this method and had an SMD LED placed on top.

****ty pic. When I first saw it IRL I was like wtf? And kinda messed it up while modding it.

As i said, not easy.

I think using copper wire tucked between the switch housing looks cleaner :P

But then your housing isn't fully closed.  :p

It was actually closed very very tightly... made it hard to take apart.

I would think that copper tape and magnet wire is likely the best option.

I remember saving these pics before but I don't remember from where.  I just remember that the guy that made them didn't want to make more to sell or something.

I wonder if that tiny bit of extra height would cause a keycap's cross stems to bottom out on the LEDs.

it would

GMK already hits the top of the switch

Haven't we gone over this already regarding Cherry profile keycaps and bottoming out? iirc, someone sliced a switch in half and showed that the keycap didn't touch the top of the housing.

You guys are missing the point.

Who's gonna get a group but going for some of those things.
