Title: Coffee killed my Corsair K60, what do?
Post by: Urinat0r on Wed, 06 August 2014, 15:32:28
I spilled some coffee on my keyboard (on the numpad), unplugged it and tried using it a few days later but it was completely dead. I later cleaned the PCB with water and Q-tips and left it to dry for 30 hours, but it still doesn't show any sign of life (no caps/numlock light or anything). Is there any hope for it? Any ideas?

I will try anything at this point, maybe put it in the dishwasher?

DO NOT put it in the dishwasher.  I am assuming there was sugar and or creamer in the coffee?  If this is the case then chances are what happened is switches are gummed up.  One thing that might help is what kind of keyboard is this?

If it is a QFR, then it is possible that you fried the controller since it sits between the arrow keys and the 6 key navigation cluster.  If that is the case there is a small chance that replacing the controller might fix the issue.

You can try and post in the free thread and see if anyone has a spare stock controller you can get.  I would suggest posting in the classifieds but you need 25 posts AND have an account for 2 months before you can create a new thread there.  There is an aftermarket controller for the QFR but I don't remember the name of it.  It is either the Frosty Flake or Pegasus Hoof iirc.

You might be able to get lucky by unplugging the board, pull the caps on affected keys, and flush them with as high of concentration of isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol that you can find.  I wouldn't recommend anything less than 80%.

Nice username. It was only a Corsair after all, you should just buy a better keyboard. ;)

Didn't see the Corsair in the title.  No idea where the controller is of if there is an aftermarket one for that board.

Flush with alcohol, or if you are desperate, flush with soapy distilled water, then distilled water (a lot of it). Your goal is to completely dissolve and remove all sugars and oils from the coffee/milk. From there, you will need to let it dry completely (probably in sunlight or with dessicant) for 3-4 days straight.

Or get another keyboard, and do this anyways.

I brought my Razer Blackwidow back to life using the water method, after I spilled a cup of orange juice on it.

I will try to get my hands on some alcohol and flush it. The coffee was black by the way.

Here is a picture of the PCB if it's any help: http://i.imgur.com/2AzTe.jpg (http://i.imgur.com/2AzTe.jpg) (not mine). I don't know what a controller looks like, but it doesn't look like it's replaceable here, does it?

Just buy an HHKB

No dedicated media keys? Get out of here =P
