Title: WI (Midwest) Meetup
Post by: HoffmanMyster on Wed, 06 August 2014, 22:09:53
Okay, this is it, people.  The greatest region-specific GH meetup.   :p

A little disclaimer: I did have a hard time organizing a MN meetup a few months ago. I am confident that being out of school will make this much easier for me.   :thumb:

So the details...
Date: October 25th <-- set in stone
Time: 1:00-6:00pm (tentative)
Location: My house in eastern WI (that's right! I'm opening my house to you weirdos   :-*   )  I will PM everyone confirmed to attend at a later date with the address.

As the title implies, I'm hoping to get some interest from all the Midwest folks. Hopefully someone is willing to make the drive?

Post a comment to express interest or questions/concerns!

Tentative List of Attendees:

Edit:
Tentative date has been included now.
Date is set, tentative time is up, attendance responses are updated.

If it's during a weekend, I may be able to do it. Just depends on the financial situation at the time.

Madison would work best, but I'd be down for a small drive

Be aware that I only have my unsaver and titanium GH60 with me over the summer. I might have to go back home sometime, so I could pick up some of my other boards when I'm there

I'll be in if somebody wants to charter a private plane for me to fly in from Indianapolis.  We could make a landing in Chicago to pick up anybody from there.

Think I'll be around. Was supposed to visit Hoff anyways :)

To address the location issue:

I know it's not ideal, but I figure if we're driving somewhere anyway, a free and reliable venue is worth it.  If anyone is interested, I am more than willing to let you sleep on my couches/floor.

My biggest issue with setting up the MN meetup was finding a venue that didn't cost $200 and wasn't inlikeflynn's workplace ( :P ), so I wanted to just eliminate that issue altogether.

It will be a weekend.  Part of the stage I'm at now is selecting the weekend, so if anyone can offer a time that does or does not work, that will give us a starting point.

Sounds like it might be late October, specifically the weekend of the 25th.  How does that work (or not work) for people?

To the extent of my knowledge, I have nothing going on that weekend. I'll ask my fiance though.

Nice!  That should be fun.  I work with a ton of people who either graduated from there or are going there.

Also, if you are considering coming down for a meetup it would be about a 4 hour drive for you.   :thumb:

I'm an outdoorsy guy fishing, camping, climbing that sort of thing so I love the location.  :D

4 hours actually isn't bad but I don't have a car so I'd need to see if I could take a bus there.

Nice! Yeah, I'm about 15 minutes (normally) from the airport. It's construction season though so going anywhere is like an extra 10-15 minutes -_- I'd definitely be interested in going though when the time comes :D

Alright guys, with a tentative (very probable!) date of October 25th, I'm hoping to get some more solid responses than "maybe".  :P  I know there are still going to be some uncertainties, and that's fine, but it helps me plan things if we know a little more about who might be here.

I've put together the worst list in the world, where everything is a 'maybe', in the OP.  If you want your status changed, make a post saying so!  Or else you will forever be tentative.

Do you have a charcoal chimney?  If not I will bring a nice one for you.  Here is the trick to getting awesome brats when cooking for large crowds.  Have beer with onions very coarsely chopped in a slow cooker just low enough that it doesn't boil, cook said brats on grill then put them in the beer.  The grill will dry them out but the beer puts it right back in.  By keeping the temp above 180 but below 212 the alcohol cooks out but the water don't, for those that have an issue with consuming it.  If not it works great to keep them juicy and good flavor.

Not trying to tell him, just offering a method I have used when cooking brats for larger events (around 500 brats).  Mind if I bring up some beer from a local micro brewery?  If is from Millstream Brewing.

Little back story on this stuff.  The first year my dad got a keg for a 4th of July party, everyone was complaining that they don't drink dark beer.  Well, 4 hours later the keg was gone.  He goes and gets a keg of regular Bud and it was still half full the next morning.  But nope, they don't drink dark beer.

Point is good!  And there's a place in town here that brews beer, but I'm not sure if you can get it outside of the restaurant.

I will, of course, have some New Glarus.  Because Wisconsin.  I don't think you're allowed to host an event and not have New Glarus.

Okay, this is it, people.  The greatest region-specific GH meetup.   :p

A little disclaimer: I did have a hard time organizing a MN meetup a few months ago. I am confident that being out of school will make this much easier for me.   :thumb:

So the details...
Date: October 25th (tentative)
Location: My house in eastern WI (that's right! I'm opening my house to you weirdos   :-*   )

As the title implies, I'm hoping to get some interest from all the Midwest folks. Hopefully someone is willing to make the drive?

Post a comment to express interest or questions/concerns!

Tentative List of Attendees:
  • HoffmanMyster (definitely)
  • CPTBadAss (almost certainly)
  • exitfire401 (maybe)
  • The_Beast (probably? if he bothers to drive 2 hours)
  • Melvang (possibly)
  • dustinhxc (if he can make the drive)
  • Joey Quinn (probably?)
  • halodub (probably)
  • Synjin (almost certainly)

Edit:
Tentative date has been included now.

Is anyone driving from St Louis area or nearby? I would love to tag along if so.

Cher

Believe me I know.  I have killed my share of salmon in WI, mostly around the Manitowac and Two Rivers areas.  Brought many cheeses back home on those fishing trips.  The one I remember the most was the fudge cheese, or was it cheese fudge??  Either way I will be bringing smoked cheese, along with a signature baked good.  I will give two hints.

It is cooked in a 9x13 baking dish, I believe I have posted the recipe here on GH.

GH60 Rev. A - titanium monster
GH60 Rev. B - Wood case
"Dolch" - Custom PCB, custom plate (might not be in the case)
IBM Model F "unsaver" - Working on installing the controller
IBM Model F 107 key
IBM Model F "tinsaver" - Controller installed, just need screws/standoffs since I lost them :(
IBM SSK
IBM F AT
IBM F50 keypad
IBM M50 Keypad
23UB - 45g topre

Plus a bunch of caps sets, clacks, BBs.....

Whatever came with the tinsaver. The stand off is really just a plastic sheet, I'll just remake one myself. And I should have screws from the 107/50 key to get the right pitch/tpi to order more.

Unfortunately, they use a different blend for their regular coffee in the US...makes me sad. It's still passable, but nowhere near as good as their canadian blend.

This is true, as straight pumpkin is ****ing disgusting. But it's easier to name and market "pumpkin spice" than it is cinnamon and nutmeg. Makes it feel seasonal.

Thanks for letting me come! Had a great time! Loved seeing all those keyboards.
That tin-saver was so tactile!

My favorite part was trying to make the google hang out work.

UMMM +100 JEALOUS. Hoff's audio listening room is incredible with the addition of the those ESP950s.

And it was great meeting everyone and seeing old faces. Was a lot of fun and I want that carrot came recipe.

Today was awesome, it was my first meet up. It was so great to talk to everyone and hear about projects and future keyboard plans. Also good food and really cool artisan caps. Hope to see all you guys again when the Chicago meet up happens.

That video call was weird but amusing

Thanks everyone for coming out today!! I had a blast, and hope you all did too.  :-*

Learned a lot and saw some sweet boards.

And big thanks to the SF crew for humouring my idea to hangout together, even though it kind of flopped.  :))  it was still fun to get an extension of both meetups and see you guys.

We totally forgot to so a group picture, but I think some people in SF may have taken some pics during the call.

I hope you will accept this picture of myself, CBA, and exitfire as consolation.

Are.. Are you hitting on me demik?

I'm on my last flight home now. Shoutouts to HoffmanMyster for hosting us. His listening room is incredible (I'm insanely jealous of those ESP950s) and he's really good at Hey You Pikachu. I had an amazing time. Really enjoyed meeting everyone and I hope to see you in Chicago!

But seriously, next year, let's have a meetup in one of the Lambeau Field suites. GB anyone?

The biggest downside will be driving from the airport.  The cheapest one is 2 and a half hour drive.  Very easy drive though.  The next more expensive is an hour drive, with the most expensive being 10 minutes.  But that would be for another thread.

That's more turnout than it seemed like from the photos.  And to such a far-fetched location!

I didn't know I had fans.  Thanks.  I'm try to make them, but pre-existing commitments for this one/lack of will for others.

Exactly!  I was worried that being so much further north than Chicago, and even Milwaukee, would discourage a lot of people, but I was very pleased with the turnout.  :)  Thanks again for making the long trek, everyone!

Thought it was pretty decent. My 2nd time having it. Liked it better this time than last, but I've also developed more of a taste for fruity beers in the last year.
