Title: ErgoDox Acrylic Case?
Post by: jameslr on Wed, 06 August 2014, 23:06:28
So, given that you can buy Edox PCBs for $40 / set from MK.com, what would it cost to source a plain acrylic case? Sorry if this is derailing your sale thread, but I'm definitely interested in building an Edox with your kit.

I don't know who would be willing to get cases cut. That is the only missing piece of the puzzle. If someone can do that, that would be awesome!

I found a free design for a litster edox case that you can get cut on Ponoko for around $23 plus shipping. Might be cheaper if you use basic transparent acrylic, but I chose dark blue. Total for an edox without switches or caps with your kit would be around $110 assuming you source the PCBs and teensy from MK.com ($39 and $23 respectively shipping included).

Edit: I'm not sure which thickness of acrylic you need. But that was using 3mm blue acrylic. I'm assuming you'll need thicker acrylic for the material so that price probably isn't accurate.

Sorry JD, we should probably move this discussion to making stuff forum. Here's the link for reference though.

That is actually just the top and bottom plates for the case, which should be 3mm. You were missing the 3 middle layers, which should all be 5mm thick.

Woah! This thread got moved!  :p

Could you use those, then put a spacer in between? Like the JD40?

You would at minimum also need the switch plate (layer 3). And that's the one that would add the most cost, due to the number of cuts.

Czarek from deskauthority seems to have one of the cheapest options: http://falbatech.pl/prestashop/index.php?id_category=12&controller=category (http://falbatech.pl/prestashop/index.php?id_category=12&controller=category)

Yeah and after looking at his case - I think I'd rather have the one he makes from PVC. It's 50 Eur + shipping and taxes. Not bad at all considering it's CNC machined. It looks like he's going to have a limited run of black PVC very very soon per his thread on DT. Still, with shipping and taxes bringing it to almost 70 Eur ($95 usd) you might be better off just buying the MD kit since you get switches with it. Unless you're in Europe of course, then it's a great deal.
