Buckling Spring.

Edit: If it's for gaming neither are ideal.  But BS would win again anyways.

I like buckling spring too, but I want to know how you intend to solve the logistical problems of manufacturing a new buckling spring board.

MX switches, it's just a matter of placing an order and waiting.  Buckling springs would be basically starting from scratch.

Buckling Springs. No contest. If you can pull it off, you'll see a good number of sales considering the only new option for them is Unicomp.

I'll admit I haven't used MX Greens, but I don't like how Blues feel and making them heavier wouldn't help much. Cherry clicky just feels cheap.

I have both already, and I don't understand how people could want to GAME on a B/S keyboard.

My Model M is my daily driver, but I always pull out another keyboard to game.  Typically it is a Ducky 108 with MX Greens.

Also, patents?

I love buckling springs and use them almost exclusively, but I don't game. My understanding is that they are not that great for gaming, and, although my Fs are NKRO, the Ms aren't.

There are a lot of people who would love to see a new modern BS keyboard hit the market, but probably not gamers.

I got my son a Filco TKL with black Cherries and strategically-placed O-rings (to cut travel distance and speed up reset time) on about a dozen specific keys, and he thinks he is in gaming heaven.

I recommend that you look towards something resembling "jailhouse greens" to really get gamers going.

Not really, but you can do fine with any switch for gaming. The biggest issue is having the right layout (usually it's a small layout) and making sure that the switches don't make your fingers tired.

And to those that say it's not nice for gaming, well I use my model F for gaming and it's super nice. Not saying cherry is bad, but I prefer the fell of BS by far.

It just feels so solid and clicky!

Capacitive Buckling Spring, but only for typing, NOT FOR GAMING. I don't like switches with hysteresis (different actuation and reset points) for gaming (MX Blues, Greens, Whites and Buckling Spring).

It's not impossible, just not easy. You need to make a plate (molded from plastic including slider tubes or from metal with molded plastic slider tubes that can be fitted) and PCB and design the PCB and sensors very well so it can sense correctly. Or you can use a membrane design, with the membrane between the plate and PCB / backplate, but I think capacitive sensing is both more robust and more interesting. You can buy the springs and pivoting plates (hammers). If you want to mass produce it, you'll probably have to buy stuff from Unicomp in bulk.

If I were making a gaming keyboard I would offer 2 versions, one with MX Clears and one with MX Blacks. I may even offer a few "customised" versions with swapped springs (Ghost Blacks and Panda Clears).

what most gamers prefer to type on.

Usually the word "type" refers to writing such as documents, coding, etc.

It is generally understood that typers and gamers have very different needs and expectations.

UNICOMP IS SELLING buckling spring KEYBOARD FOR UNDER 100$  SO WHY NOT BUY FROM THEM?
i am trying to build the ultimate gaming keyboard so first i like to know what most gamers prefer to type on.

Then I guess you should have asked "What keyswitch do gamers like most".

For most I guess it would be MX Reds or Blacks. For me and some others, MX Clears. There are already a lot of gamer boards with Reds. That's why I'd offer one with Blacks or Clears.

I like Clears because they are very tactile, but they don't have hysteresis (actuation and reset points in different places) and you can "hover" with them like you can with linear switches (MX Reds and Blacks) due to the actuation point being just below the tactile bump, so you can use it as a reference. That makes them nice for gaming AND typing for me.

All switches can be used for gaming and it's largely a personal preference, but some switches have physical limitations which make them "less good". Buckling Springs and MX "clicky" switches like Blues and Greens have hysteresis. Buckling Spring switches are also usually harder to press and require further movement before actuating than most others. Topre switches have a force curve that makes it hard not to bottom out when you press them, whcih makes it difficult / impossible to "hover" them. Normal rubber dome keyboards actuate on bottom out, so you have to press the key all the way to the bottom to actuate it.

FranBunnyFFXII mentioned that the reason they want a buckling spring keyboard for gaming is the tactility, but they may not have been aware of MX Clear switches which have tactility, but not hysteresis and actuate 2mm down and can be "hovered". It's not a good idea to make a product based on just one person's opinion, so it's good that you're asking here. You'll get lots of opinions and most of them will be different from each other  ;) So don't just go by my opinion, either.

Title: Re: VOTE: CHERRY MX GREEN or BUCKLING SPRING
Post by: FoxWolf1 on Mon, 11 August 2014, 12:09:06
Neither.

I mean, I suppose that if I had to choose between only these two, and specifically with gaming in mind, I'd pick the buckling spring, since the tactile and auditory feedback of BS is more precisely aligned with the activation than, AFAIK, any other switch, but I'm not super enthusiastic about either BS or MX Green.

Of course, if you do go the BS route for a gaming keyboard, you will have to work out a way of implementing acceptable rollover, unlike Unicomp. An NKRO membrane (there are a couple of Korean market dome keyboards with this) or Model F-style capacitive sensing would do. A "gaming optimized matrix", on the other hand, is not acceptable, since these are just 2KRO with marketing bull****, even if they claim a large rollover number by measuring incorrectly (rollover is measured by the worst-case scenario, not the best).

Buckling Spring.

It's slightly nicer than Greens because the reset point is identical to the actuation point, so there's no chance of losing a keypress. But generally a lighter action key is prefered by most gamers. I haven't run into much issues with my Unicomp, but I've not been gaming with it heavily yet either (only some Elite Dangerous).

I really don't see why everyone just assumes this to be so. I rotate between clicky types and game just fine on all of them despite possibility of 2KRO. From BS, to Matias, Monterey Blue, Space Invaders, etc. None of which are cherry.
