Sweet. I'm not a fan of the teensy on the Phantom due to it making case selection a pain, looking forward to seeing what you come out with.

Any room inside this thing for a thin brass plate to make it heavier? I loved my GON 60% which this looks similar to, but thought it needed more weight to it personally. I'll at least be picking up a PCB or two at a minimum.

PS: Also consider something 75% next, severe lack of options at the moment and something like the MX Mini with several material types would be great.

im looking in to that, ive had a few requests already today, i also just saw your ticket on the store sir, im just waiting for raccoon to get home then ill have that sorted for you

as for the brass plate, we will be adding a numbered small brass plate to the inside of the case, i believe there is some clearance, but i couldnt comment accurately on what you could get in there

no, it will come with the cases

we havent nailed down the implementation yet, but this is also going to happen with the custom jd40 builds so we will have some time to experiment with what will be best

@Bunny you may want to consider putting info on whether or not the assembly includes stabs for clarity purposes.

it includes everything

all components etc
lube

basically whatever you want, as long as we can get it

if people want to provide there own switches, they can contact me and we will discount those off the price

oh i should specify, for people taking the custom boards, if you can leave your layout in the notes, we will also confirm at time of building that you still want the layout you chose so dont feel you are locked in

I figured it did, I just wanted to help.  I assumed someone would ask down the line if its not listed (someone will still probably ask even if it is though).  It lets people know what they have to source themselves to get a fully functional board (especially with the stabs GB closing soon).  And GH's past history with stabs haven't been the most successful...

that is a screenshot of the gerber, the silkscreen is literally that size, pcb is black, silkscreen is white, aside form that, its the same specs as a nerd 60 if you wanna look at the technical specs of that, its a lovely pcb

The top of the case is the plate and I doubt you could buy just the top of the case.

However, you could buy just the PCB and then source a 60% plate separately. IMSTO has had a couple of rounds and GON sells them as well.

It says the controller is pre-installed.  If I were to buy the PCB, what additional would be necessary?  Just the switches, or does it need additional components soldered on like the USB connector or any smd parts?  (Not including LEDs, I wouldn't want any anyway. :P )

You would need diodes as well as switches.

If you did want leds, you would also need resistors, but other than that the PCB is good to go. :D

of course, just list your switch type and you paypal in the notes and ill invoice you separately, itll be 50 cents a switch as i have to pay VAT to get them in to the UK, but i have tons and tons on hand now so can accommodate whatever you want

Hey guys, noob with a few questions here:
how does this board compare to the GH60 with a teensy? As far as I can tell from the description (http://www.gonskeyboardworks.com/pcbs/95-nerd-60-by-gon.html#/7_optional_soldering-no_i_will_do_it_myself_) it does support keymaps, but to what extent? And what about layers?
Is the PCB interchangeable with a poker/GH60 case, and vise versa (GH60 PCB with the [CTRL]ALT 60 case)?
Does it come presoldered? If not, are the electronics included (diodes, LED's, etc.)?
What's the price for the kit without the switches?
And finally, is the 20$ int'l shipping price regardless of where you order to?
One of the best looking 60% I've seen yet for sure, very interested. How many are left, so I could know how much time I have left to decide?

Thanks!

the board is fully programmable

the pcb itself will fit in other 60% cases and has the same foot print as a poker

it comes with the controller presoldered and tested

if you order a complete build, it will come built and tuned, with leds etc of your choosing

the pcb on its own or pcb with case does not

we can do any soldering needed for a small additional fee though

the shipping price is fixed no matter where you are, unless you are in the UK, in which case we can discount it slightly

there are still some left, i dont know how long they will last, some days we get no orders, some days we get 5

Hello there!

I have a GH60, and I have not used a board with a teensy so I can't compare it with that.

But I like this pcb more than the gh60 because it supports full leds, has special smd leds on the bottom of the pcb specifically for this housings like this. (its how the housing glows in the middle).

It has excellent key mapping software that works out of box on windows. There are 2 fully customizable fn layers. There is also macro support.

The ctrlalt PCB should fit in most (if not all) poker/gh60 housings. The gh60 pcb would not fit in this case because of the tight usb connector placement.

The controller is presoldered and tested. You would need diodes, switches, resistors, and leds.

And yes $20 anywhere.

Less than half remain :D

If you have any more questions let me know!

I'm contemplating on getting a nerd60 pcb. I have a few questions though,

Can I add LEDs, diodes and resistor to an order? How much each?

The ctrlalt PCB should fit in most (if not all) poker/gh60 housings.
Will it fit on Hammer case?

It would involve the plate not having the 1.5 mods on each lower corner along with the split backspace and split right shift.

This housing supports everything (iso, split shifts/backspace/1.5/7 or 1.25/6.25).

I'll find out if I can make happy layout an option.

Went over some of your posts, congrats on that awesome lookin' Nerd60 HHKB!
The "cool" factor is definitely tempting, and I'm in a huge dilemma on whether to get one or not, and if so which one (Duck Eagle vs. Nerd60), but I know that if I would, my ErgoDox, wouldn't stand a chance, and it isn't even fully assembled yet.

we are looking in to the possibility of the hhkb option now, if that happens, any previous orders will be able to adjust there order to account for this

if you wanna do it yourself, but have everything provided for you,l if you shoot me a pm with exactly what you want, i can sort a quote for you

Nice cheers!

I've sent over an email on the ctrlalt site just incase you were a little busy, but I realise I've missed some stuff off! (disregard the email :D - email is same as my username).

I'll work it all out, and send you a PM later tonight :)

Cheers!

Yeah it really does look nice!

Hoping to get a nice quote this morning, it looks REALLY nice.

Only thing I can't decide on is switch type:- I've got browns and reds so far, and want it for gaming and typing - so that's potentially Blacks as well, or possibly even clear?

Decisions... (any help with switch decision I'd appreciate :P)

Thanks

Yep, contact one of  them for a custom order - I've done the same , essentially everything minus keycaps to build the keyboard :)

On that note - Bunny, did you want the order ID so you can adjust the total cost so I can pay?

It's not actually possible to go plateless with this keyboard as it is designed so that the top of the case and the plate are the same piece.

The design is very similar to this one:

Edit: You can get a better idea how it will look with keycaps on by browsing the Post Your GON thread (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=47644.0)

This pcb only supports cherry pcb mounted stabs.

The gon ns housing/plate is designed to hug the stabilizer inserts in place.

You can use the pcb without a plate in different type of housing, like a poker case.

Edit: for clarity

My board arrived on Monday but my girlfriend didn't get here yesterday
So I had it this morning and I have just finished my build with reds.

This pcb is so awesome : it looks better IRL than on pictures. One advice : order as soon as posible  :thumb:

i still have the last couple PCB only orders to get out, they will leave either tomorrow or monday

we are having out carpets and some decorating done here and its basically required me to be in all the time but with very little internet access

As promised, here is my build: http://imgur.com/a/wEQoH

I find it interesting you mounted the through hole diodes underneath instead on top, I mounted on top on my nerd60 and phantom and still had clearance for a plate. Underneath can cause clearance issues with some cases.
Title: Re: [CTRL]ALT 60 GB
Post by: Ripudio on Sun, 09 November 2014, 00:39:02
I soldered mine underneath as well. I kind of figured if something were to go wrong, it'd be way easier desolder one diode underneath than the entire board to get the plate off.
Title: Re: [CTRL]ALT 60 GB
Post by: Glod on Sun, 09 November 2014, 01:28:56
Well honestly either way works really. ideally you should use smd diodes for the nerd60. I just happened to use through hole because I was short on smd.
Title: Re: [CTRL]ALT 60 GB
Post by: uns211 on Sun, 09 November 2014, 21:55:32
I soldered them on the bottom for the same reason as Ripudio even though I didn't use a plate. Not sure if I'll get an aluminum/acrylic case in the future.
Title: Re: [CTRL]ALT 60 GB
Post by: DanielT on Mon, 10 November 2014, 00:10:11
GON solders the diodes underneath the PCB. Sometimes it can cause clearance problems for the stabs if the diodes are on top. I have mine soldered by GON and there are no problems for the case, at least if it has stadoffs.

I used 2012 (0805) SMD resistors. 470 ohm for the switch backlight LEDs and Gon recommends 133 ohm for the side LEDs:

I tried searching but couldn't find any info on the differences between Ver1 and Ver2. Anything significant?

Update: I just got this response from GON:
Quote
Differences between V1 and V2 are

1. Optional Bluetooth connection availability(USB/BT combo)
2. On-PCB Backlight LEDs

The second is only available /w NerD "Crystal" housings.

Thanks,

Someone correct me if I am wrong but I think the main difference is that Ver2 is compatible to GON's wireless module while the Ver1 is not.

It seems CTRL alt is running al kinds of stuff all over the place so i guess this does not have the highest prio.

I found everything i needed from a local supplier(Sweden) and its easier when you know what you are looking for, i found everything except good in siwtch leds. PM me if you need any help also you should be able to find everything in the US i guess.

Dont be sorry. I'm just impatient even though i wont be building it until after the holidays, i want to have all the stuff together or at least ordered to get it ASAP.
I have no real need to have them right now.

I understand and i apologize for being pushy about it.

I'll go ahead and wait and use the difference in shipping price and cost in items to tip you guys. You deserve it for all the hard work you guys put in.

the next run of pcbs will be with us the beginning of march, so 4 weeks

the cases will be with us late march, about 7 weeks

all pcb and pcb and case orders will be sent right away (90% of orders)

there is only a handful of custom builds for these, they will be turned around within about a week

so slightly longer than expected but we wanted these absolutely perfect

I don't remember but the PCB allows for both PCB mounting or case mounting right?
Works for pcb mounting, so if you find a plate then you can use plate mounted switches

As far as I know, they both work

It might have been a stupid question as it is the first DIY build I am considering doing. I wondered if there is a difference in PCB when you intend to mount whether on a plate or on the PCB. Like there is for the switches. I guess there are 2 kinds of stabs whether you mount them on PCB or on a plate, aren't there?

It's my first complete build I'm doing myself so I came across all the same questions when buying my parts a few months ago in preparation.

But yes, you buy the specific type stabs for how you are going to build. PCB mount stabs or plate mounted

If your pcb supports pcb mounting, then you can do both since you can always toss a plate on top.

A plate mounted only pcb will not have the holes for the legs of a pcb mount switch to fit in to settle down on to the plate

Anyone is free to correct me or explain it better if you can haha

Thanks for your explanation.

My question was more about if we could use pcb mount stabs onto a plate? For example, you can transform a PCB mounted switch to a plate mount switch just by cutting the little legs of your switches. I wonder if there is something similar for stabs or just have to order the right stabs at first.

Btw do you have an address where I could get some plate mounted stabs?

It depends a lot on the plate you are using, for example some support PCB mounted stabs, this is the case for a lot korean boards. PCB mounted stabs are only from Cherry.
Other plates support plate mounted stabs in this case you have 2 types, Costar and Cherry, some plates can take both other not, depends on the cutout. You can not make a plate mount Cherry stab out of a PCB one.

Costar stabs can be bought from mechanicalkeyboards , Cherry are harder to find, I think mouser has them but you have to buy a lot of them. There was also a GB ran by Ivan.

The PCB has only the controller parts soldered, you need to solder diodes (it supports both DIP/thru hole and SMD diodes) and resistors for LED's (SMD).
Maybe something has changed with this batch but this is how it was initially.

I'm pretty sure there are no extra cases ( I completely regret not buying  one and forgot to place an order anyway)

The PCBs have the controllers pre soldered but that's it. You solder the diodes and resistors

I believe you can order directly from GON to have these pre-soldered to your liking.

Edit: DanielT beat me to it.

Forgot to submit and got distracted lol

Alright I was asking for the case just in case something has changed because I'd be interested to get one.

Considering the diodes and resistors, I heard they are a ***** to solder. As it would be my first time soldering it got me worried a bit. If you can deal with Gon to get them soldered that's cool as well.

If you take your time with soldering, it's not too difficult, but the resistors for the bottom/side LEDs are VERY small, which will be troublesome

I would recommend asking/waiting for a reply from Bunny to see if there is a pre-soldered option or any solution to avoid the SMD soldering

If you use DIP diodes the job is simple, don't need advanced soldering skills, only a decent soldering iron for example this one is really good for the price http://www.antex.co.uk/soldering/standard-soldering-irons/xs25/ and it's not some piece of crap made on some ship.
For SMD that's another thing, you need some experience and a decent soldering station. I was able to solder with my Antex iron a few resistors but it's a pain.

But I would highly recommend to get one PCB, the quality is better than anything I have ever seen, and for starters you can solder only diodes and when you have the time do also the resistors.

Fair enough, thanks.

IIRC, the diodes are for the switches to work and resistance are for the LED?

Yep, diodes are for the switches. You need resistors only if you want LED's. [CTRL]ALT store has also the diodes (DIP) so you can order everything in one place.

If I was able to do it you can do it, I have zero soldering skills. Practice before on some scrap PCB with some wires and stuff like that and you will get the hang of it. For SMD is another story, for that you need more practice.

here is the progress

firstly gon says he is very sorry for the delay, its been a very busy time for him

the pcbs are finished and we even have a few more extras
the cases have finished being machined, and in his words, just need "blaster finish/anodizing" which they are undergoing now and he says he can have everything shipped by the end of this month

ill get pictures of them before they ship and put those up as soon as i have them

Yes!
If a case is possible, I'd be interested :D (not commuted, but interested)

Also, if it is possible to do it and ship separately (to not delay the current order) that sounds like a good idea if it would take too long

I've never taken anyone's order previously so I don't know the best way to proceed. I thought that I would pay him over and then I show you the transaction receipt so you could change the delivery address for his order to be shipped to me. Does it sound like a reasonable way to do it? Or shall I just wait for him to receive the goods and then sell it to me?

Concerning the case that'd be wonderful if you could ask him. However I don't want to burden you, if you can't/don't have the time for it that's ok. I believe you are already really busy with all the gb going on atm. As asdfjkl36 stated that'd be best if we don't delay the gb as we are late but if there is a way to do it without delaying and still be in the current shipment that'd be awesome indeed.  :thumb:

He can change the shipping address through his account on [CTRL]ALT. Then once the order is shipped it will just go to you instead of him.

No offense to Zentaaa, but if that's the case it also means that he could do it again at any time once I paid him to still get delivered at his place. I don't say he's a bad guy, I just don't know him. It would be safer for me to just order one of the extra Bunny talked about.

hey guys

a bit of a mirror for the post above, but this time i have actually had a long chat with gon myself

here is the progress

firstly gon says he is very sorry for the delay, its been a very busy time for him

the pcbs are finished and we even have a few more extras
the cases have finished being machined, and in his words, just need "blaster finish/anodizing" which they are undergoing now and he says he can have everything shipped by the end of this month

ill get pictures of them before they ship and put those up as soon as i have them
Thanks for the update Bunny.

As there are few extra PCBs, would there be some more cases as well? Would it be possible to take over Zentaaa's PCB only order too? Thanks.

thats between you and zentaa, but its not problem if you sort it with him

as for the case, there will be one extra, but ill wait until they are all on hand before doing anything with that

if you really wanted to guarantee a case, i could speak to gon and find out how feasible it is to add more to the order at this stage

:thumb:

A little off topic but what is up with the ctlalt.io store?

Mostly curious about the jd40's but the "we are remodelling" is obviously bogus.
wtf?

why is it bogus, we are making ctrl alt 2.0, so the store is down whilst we focus on that

I think you'd be better off finding it yourself and quoting it to him in a pm.

Because one month of BunnyLake PMs is hundreds or even thousand of pm

there is tracking sir

as for the blocking, although i cant remember why i blocked you, i do end up blocking a lot of people, not because i dont wanna communicate with them, but at some point maybe they said something i felt was negative or annoyed me in some way, so i just block em so if im having a bad day i dont see the comment, but if im not having a bad day i can just click view comment, my block list has nothing to do with who i do and do not like

that sounds kinda silly out loud, but basically i just block people to make reading the board a little more enjoyable sometimes, but next time im on my block list ill try remember to remove you from it, and if you ever need to contact me privately, i never block anyone from my email, which you can get to by hitting contact on ctrlalt.io

We goofed. We all goofed for not getting these. Well, okay--I wasn't around when this was active, but still! Fantastic limited edition NERD 60 housing, my fellows! Looks really spectacular.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone parted with theirs. You guys know how GHers are. :))

Luckily I found someone to buy mine off of, but I want a top plate that is HHKB layout. I've tried contacting GON about it in various forms for a month or two now with no answer :/

As many may have guessed from my repeated posts on this topic, I'd be glad to buy someone's case with or without the PCB. ;)

Question for anyone that can answer. I bought my PCB and case off of somebody else (really excited to build it, it's gorgeous), but either the package only came with one screw for the feet or I lost the other one while I was opening the box. Is there any I could get a replacement screw?

they are standard screws that amazon sell, or gon also sells them, but will be cheaper on amazon

I would start with M2 or M3.  Let us know what you find out.

I actually needed to buy one to replace a missing foot screw and bought different colored ones for the case

The case uses M3x12mm
And the feet use M3x8mm

Some people already send me 2 of these cases being sold but there always have been people quicker than me. I can't spam check the classified too often, I don't have the time for it.
I appreciate that you want to help me, thanks.

The last I heard (several weeks ago) was that Margo has been out of town with some family issues and has not gotten back in the saddle yet.  Not sure if there is anyone else doing some of the work, but that's all I know.

I really wish I would have got in on this one. It came when I was low on money, and I periodically remember its existence and get sad.

This is my current understanding of the situation, as well.
