Are you in control of it or just along for the ride?
-
We are not always in control. One of my best friends died in a way that was just sheer bad luck. I met my girlfriend somewhere randomly. If I had done anything different that day, our paths never would have crossed. Those kind of things make you realize that you really only have limited control over the things that happen in your life.
Though at the same time, there are things you can control. Things that are a direct result of what you have done. No one, for example, finishes his or her PhD without putting in the effort. It is something you must do, and if you do it , it will shape your future. Also no one becomes strong and healthy without choosing to live a healthy lifestyle. This is something you do and it will affect the rest of your life.
If you are lucky, like many of us are, life is this mixture of randomness and opportunity. Some people in some places in this world however, do not have these choices. The choice to live a healthy life, or to achieve certain things have been taken from them. I can not complain about not being able to change my destiny when I get so many opportunities that a lot of people do not have.

I think in order to get any meaningful discussion going about destiny, at some point or another you are going to be dealing with the big problems of causation and free will. But to be succinct, I agree with Grim Fandango that there is a mixture of randomness and opportunity.
[Lol I also thought this was about the game coming out soon]
