This is one of the first people whose work I really grew up on. Sad that it had to end the way it did.

Depression is a very evil thing.

I always wonder - What did  * HE *  have to be depressed about?

"Don't Worry, Be Happy" - nobody ever said it better than him.

This exactly.

You could just imagine him being one of those old rimpled Hollywood actors that still starts in movies when he is 90.

All of us have some fundamental darkness within us. It could be greed, ignorance, arrogance, anger - and this could surface anytime and can happened to anyone, even a comedian like Robin Williams. They say the big red smile on a clown face hides many things. This is just a sad day indeed.

To be fair. Most of the news around the world makes me want to do this. Though this definitely adds to that feeling of overall sadness.

Why is it that the talented people all die too early and the lazy arse, lying scumbags all live to old age in this fvcked-up world?

I still remembered Mork and Mindy (grew up with him on Channel 9) and he flew at a million miles an hour with his jokes/gags, never seen anyone before that could match his speed and delivery.

I always watched any talk show that he is on because he was still brilliant to watch and listen to.  Never wept for anyone on this crummy planet before, so now I have to be a full on mangina and let the tears flow for this unique person.  There will never be another Robin Williams.

Makes me sad to think someone that brought so much joy, happiness and laughter to so many people potentially couldn't stand to stay in this world anymore... I hope he finds peace wherever he is now. Been listening to his standup ever since I heard the news; A Night at the Met still cracks me up after almost 28 years.

Such a beautiful man, really saddened to hear of his passing this morning. Been wandering around like a zombie all day, can't believe it :(

If any of you are lonely or depressed PLEASE talk to someone about it, there's no shame in struggling. If you don't know who to contact or don't feel like talking to a stranger then give me a PM, I've been dealing with depression since I was a child so I might be able to help.

Bipolar is actually pretty common amongst performers, I have it too and when you're manic it's easy to be the centre of attention. It's the swing back into depression that's so tough to deal with, it comes out of nowhere with no explanation and it can seem like you'll never be up again.

That swing back is the worst thing...you do not feel that anyone can help, you put on a mask and perform a joyful extatic person just to come back home, look in the mirror and hate every bit of what you see, hate the person you've become....new morning comes, begins with a mask, and a crawl through reality...

Seems that this "Bipolarity" is common, but with people who love to help, who love to bring a smile, a rest of mind....but when you are such person you take too much onto yourself...and when there is a problem that you have people still reach to you, cause you always helped, you are always bringing a smile...not many people listen to the scream inside you...the problems that you have with the world...

Ok 'nough of talking. Let the great man speak again in your houses with his stand ups that you know and love. They carry not only laughter but they teach many lessons if you are careful enough to listen.

I remember when RW was on the comedy circuit.   He had crazy energy.   And then I watched Mork and Mindy.   And I thought he was always great even in less than great movies.   So sad ......

I didn't even believe in mental illness until someone close to me completely fell apart during a divorce.  It was soooo scary.  Some people are strong enough to deal with it, but unfortunately many aren't.

Anyway, sad loss.   Hopefully he's in a much better place ...

I have seen most of the well-known movies he's in before, so last night I decided to try one I hadn't seen.  Has anyone else seen One Hour Photo?  That was just a bizarre film and I'm not even sure what to think about it.

I think it's time for some Dead Poets Society, Jumanji, or Flubber tonight.  With some stand-up sprinkled in somewhere.

Oh yeah, that's a great film -- very dramatic and crrrreeepy. It really made me look at Robin Williams in an entirely different light. There's also a movie called Insomnia in which Williams is villainous -- and he holds his own against Al Pacino, no less! What a shame -- damn you drugs and bipolar disorder.  :(

Yikes... The summary: Some guy predicted in that thread last Friday that RW would die soon.
RW did play video games such as Call of Duty, so there is a slim chance that he saw the thread on that gaming-oriented message board and that that could have pushed him over the edge ...

Yes, that and "The Final Cut" (sci-fi, good, not great movie) and two of his lesser known movies that I like.

But "One Hour Photo" really shows his range.  He was able to tap into darkness very subtly.

Sad news indeed.  So many good memories are tied to this man. :-(

My family actually watched Jumanji together two days ago.  It was my kids' first exposure to Robin Williams as an actor (they've seen Aladdin), and it hit the sweet spot of making them laugh, holding them fascinated, and also scaring the crap out of them a couple of times.

Mrs Doubtfire was a childhood favorite for me, both because it is hilarious and because it helped me express emotion about my own parents' divorce.  Similarly, as a teenager Dead Poet's Society inspired me in a very deep way to make the most of life despite struggling with anxiety and depression, and to find beauty in simple things.

Rest in peace.

Rest In Peace.

To me, if not for my generation, you feel like the other Uncle in Sam's family. An Uncle of America's. If Sam was the A-J-squared away uncle who always went to church and disciplined his kids way too much without ever taking the time to understand them you were the Uncle who knew more about life. You hooked up with women, read sh*t, had wonderful stories about how anything was possible in life and were always supportive and interested in your nieces and nephews. I'm surprised to find that I'm so sad to you're gone but I hope you're happy now.

Indeed.
