The layout's weird, even by 122 standards..

The part number is different. It reminds me of a ComputerLab 122 - same legends on the keys - which is pad printed black keys and is rubber dome.
Maybe you got a great deal. You could ask the seller if they could pop a key off a board and take a picture.
The caps are that weird silver shiny plastic Unicomp offers.
It may be rubber dome.
The caps are that weird silver shiny plastic Unicomp offers.I sorta like that colour.
Even with the nearly $50 postage to Australia, it's still a great deal. You can make it ANSI.
Now ... what's wrong with it? Apart from the non-ANSI layout.
But the title definitely says "NEW UNICOMP MODEL M MECHANICAL 122 KEY USB KEYBOARD".
So in theory, if you buy it and it's not mechanical, can you get a refund since the title says it's mechanical? I'm not exactly sure how eBay would handle that.

Interesting.
I have absolutely no use for this but I still find myself wanting one because of the price.
Thanks for the link, couldn't pass this up
Tis my pleasure good sir or ma'am :D

The only issue is: RD or not.
Maybe I'll get one and make it into an unsaver.
I went for it! The price made it pretty impossible for me not to jump the gun, but this'll be my first model m :] The next BS board I get will hopefully be a SSK. Hopefully hopefully I won't buy any other BS boards in the near future because I set the standard so high hahaI have so many buckling spring boards now I can't even remember how many. Got to be at least 10 Fs and something like 6 Ms, though one of the Ms is currently missing. It's only a terminal KB for parts.
How difficult is it to make into ANSI? That sounds like a project I'd like to take on.
Terminal: The type that would actually be used with an old IBM terminal. Sends scancodes that are not usable on modern PCs. Requires modding to use.
Emulator: Compatible with both terminal and PC. Sends unique scancodes for the keys that are not on the standard 104/105 layouts. The extra keys usually do nothing because the programs don't have a use for them, or the PC doesn't have a driver for them.
PC: These send shift+normal PC key for the extra keys. All keys are compatible with a modern PC out of the box, but you can't reprogram the extra keys as multimedia keys.
3275 and 5250 are two different layouts. The 5250 layout is closer to the modern PC.
If you want to reprogram the keys, the emulator is the easiest.
I say we have enough power to down his feedback if he says it was a typo. If he says it is a typo and tries to cancel I vote we all leave a negative feedback . :) Just a thoughtYou have to pay for the return shipping unless the seller agree to pay for that. With more then 20+ people returning their keyboards. I think they might not pay for that...

Ebays' newest policy they are implementing makes the seller pay for return shipping.

If the seller cancelled the transaction, there'd be no keyboard to return.

Exactly. I am saying if the seller decides not to send out the keyboards because of a typo . We will have the force to blackmail >:)

I know, I didn't mean that we should actually blackmail him :). I just meant we should leave negative feedback. Listing errors for a power seller is really unacceptable <.< .

eBay protects sellers against something called 'feedback extortion', however that doesn't mean you can't leave negative feedback. It just means you can't threaten them with it.
Wonder if any of these will actually ship?
Damn, I missed out. I put in an offer, but then I saw that the listing was pulled.

Did you end up BIN or did they accept your $15 offer?
Damn, I missed out. I put in an offer, but then I saw that the listing was pulled.
Yea that was a bad move. :D When the price is already way low you should have just used BIN.
If you are already in the F, don't bother to get a unicomp...Damn, I missed out. I put in an offer, but then I saw that the listing was pulled.

Yeah, hindsight is 20/20. Oh well, I didn't really need it, but I thought I'd give it a shot. Anyways, back to my Model F's.
Just received mine. Great news:
Buckling spring. USB. Not terminal. All* (including F13 - 24) F keys are registered properly by windows when triggered. ;DShow Image(http://i.imgur.com/Qlvzwjq.jpg)

I just liked the 122 key configuration. I can't afford a Model F 122 right now. I'm kind of intimidated by the restoration of those things anyways. It looks like a lot of skill is involved in disassembling, reassembling, making a new foam layer, etc.
Just received mine. Great news:

Firstly, don't worry about the foam mat. You don't even have to disassemble the F-122, that is unless you want to perform an ANSI mod. I own two Model F 122's and the only reason I disassembled one of them was to perform the ANSI mod. I never replaced the foam layer during the process and it works just fine. I mean, you can do that but it certainly isn't required. I mean, some people might consider unscrewing the case to clean the inside, but putting that back together is simple. The only semi-technical challenge might be creating the adapter, and even that is really simple once you understand what's involved. Before I bought mine, I was highly intimidated, but aside from the ANSI mod, I didn't have any real problems. Buy one when you get the funds! They're so totally worth it! In fact, there are a couple (http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p5197.m570.l1313&_nkw=ibm+model+f+122&_sacat=See-All-Categories) on eBay right now. Neither one is in great condition but they look like all they need is a little TLC.

Let's hope everyone else's is as good.

Most of the ones I own (AT, XT in box, two unsavers, three 4704 keyboards, one 3178, one NIB 122-key FRU assembly) have the foam in good shape. Sadly, the first 122-key model F I got had the foam in terrible shape. It depends on how it was used / stored (likely heat kills the foam) if you get one with foam in good condition or bad condition.
I know from the experience above that it is not unreasonable to want to replace foam in bad condition.
Wonderful..... Mine is lost after it left Reno.... USPS is tracking it down... *sigh*

So which one of you geekhackers works for the USPS in Reno?Probably Ripster.

Well, mine's apparently dead.
I plugged it in, it does all the normal happy new-device-on-USB stuff, and the LEDs synch with those on the other keyboard, but it's not sending any keystrokes at all.
I installed a USB sniffer, and it just isn't even sending traffic. The device identifies correctly (Surf Ruffian 122 Keyboard v2.50 apparently... what a name :P )
Even removing the controller and shorting the membrane contacts pins on its edges directly does nothing.
The only thing I can think is "defective controller" or "wildly messed up internals somehow"
One thing that's weird about this board is the controller has a LOAD of different sockets on it. There are, notably, two four-pin sockets, either of which *could* accept the USB connector.
Part of me, figuring I'm stuck with it now, is considering trying the other connector, but the rest of me remembers "Hey, let's take the bracket off the disc controller card and mount it backwards" experience.
I noticed a mention that the "Ruffian" labelled PCBs are apparently also used in the trackball models; the extra sockets may well be to connect parts of the trackball and potentially even trackpoint assembly. If that's the case I may have to try and give my 122 a nipple when I get it.
Also, it's not USB-implementation dependent; same problems on the USB 2.0 and 3.0 controllers of my 990FX board, and on my Atom tablet's lone full-sized USB 3.0 port.
Mine chatters on the O key. I messed up the spring trying to daftly fix it, so I ordered 50 pivot plates and springs from Unicomp. I'm not too bummed because I did want to do more DIY stuff with keyboards, and what better subject than a budget BS board that's actually pretty nice? I still hope the problem isn't too serious though. I'm fairly certain it's the spring. that's at fault.
I will always call a trackpoint a nipple mouse.(http://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/appropriate_term.png)

It's possible it's configured in some other way-- i. e. by some of the resistor packs and unsoldered bits-- but I don't know and lack a means to test.
Two questions: What size hex nut is that on the back, and has anyone opened up one of these to see if we have a jumper so that this can do terminal emulation mode?5.5mm or 7/32 "
The PCB is jumperless. I tore mine apart trying to fix it (poor membrane contact) ended up scraping the traces right off the membranes. There's a 2 pin connector that's either for a speaker or a config jumper. I'll take a closer look later. you can also order a replacement membrane sheet if you need. Or just use it for parts.
Now back up at $60. Still a relatively decent deal, but meh.

It's not the same seller and the pictures are different. Wonder if the original seller sold his stock to this guy, or there's a sudden excess of Unicomp 122's flooding the Nevada area and resellers are picking them up.
