Title: IBM SSK $150 + shipping starting bid, $300 BIN
Post by: nubbinator on Sat, 16 August 2014, 01:24:04
Not an amazing price, but one of the better ones if people don't stupidly bid it up.  I know ones in worse shape have sold for more than the BIN price of late.  Seriously, don't be stupid bidders people, either BIN or snipe it.

I don't get it. When Bro Caps had a SSK for sale - it was $200, nobody bought for the longest time. Then BunnyLake sold his SSK, $300 including a Hack Orange CC (buckling spring) and it took a lot of convincing until somebody bought it. So yeah, keep the cost low people!

cgbuen has had one SSK in sale for almost two months for 170$.

There's no way I'll pay either of those prices for a normal ssk.....

Yes, but ad says CONUS only.  Otherwise it would be long gone.   I know because I would have bought it.

I remember when rubber dome keyboards were considered better than BS keyboards.  Hey! They're so easy to press and don't make those annoying clacking noises!
I blame today's monocled teenagers.

He must mean he'll pay up to $100 for a regular SSK, but will splurge up to $170 for an industrial gray model? Doesn't seem likely $170 will be beat anytime soon, unless you are really lucky to find a seller who doesn't know what they have.

It was another way of saying that an SSK is neither worth $150 nor $300....

I have 3 SSK's and they've all been acquired for significantly less than that.
This was my first: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-IBM-Keyboard-model-M-without-numeric-keypad-/371029901787?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=j2mBRUbVJRy7nQ6UkY9D2gi%252BoT8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc (http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-IBM-Keyboard-model-M-without-numeric-keypad-/371029901787?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2047675.l2557&nma=true&si=j2mBRUbVJRy7nQ6UkY9D2gi%252BoT8%253D&orig_cvip=true&rt=nc)
And then in a stroke of luck, I learned to check my local thrift store once every week.

I picked up the ssk from cgbuen at the asking price.  Overpaid?  I think not, in view of the eBay prices and the fact that I needed one tout de suite for a specific work space.  Plus, I haven't yet been able to acclimate to MX TKL boards.  This board looks in sweet condition (very clean!) and works a treat, so I'm a happy camper.  (Even the included USB adapter (adesso) works.)  cgbuen went out of his way to meet me to deliver the item; he's a nice guy suffering from a keyboard addiction like a lot of us.  Surprisingly normal, I'd say.  Square dealer, too, if you deal with him. Highly recommended.

Oddly, my thrift store has not panned out at all, but I can't say I've been there every week.

By the way, if anyone's interested in a KUL 87 (clear) or an industrial Model M . . . .

$170 sounds like a great deal. I understand people don't like the prices going up. I just got my SSK a few weeks ago, for free. I REALLY got lucky, it is in FANTASTIC shape. But I am with them, I would probably never pay the average going price of an SSK on ebay (or here for that matter). But I would also never sell it at a significant loss. Ebay eats close to 15% of the final selling price in fees. So if I can sell it there for ~$210+, I would sell it else where for ~$180, and no less. But now that its been bolt & LED modded and restored by Maxx at Phosphorglow.net, my asking price will/would be even higher.

Anything is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.   Why would someone pay $500+ for an SSK that comes with the styrofoam package and the cardboard box??   There are users and then there are collectors.   Industrial SSKs sell for $1K+   Why??   I have no idea.

I will say that my initial batch of SSKs cost me about $40/ea.   5 of them.   Packed and shipped so horribly that one was destroyed.   Luckily, the other 4 arrived intact.

Over the years, I've paid as much as $600 for a certain model and as little as $120.    They were ALL worth the money I spent, so I'm perfectly happy with it.

This is GH, where we pay $200+ for a small plastic toy cap, but we'll scrap around to save $10 on an entire keyboard LOLOL.   For me, the SSKs that are earlier with the one-piece caps are worth a HUGE premium since I personally prefer the over the two piece variants.    And a properly set up SSK is as nice a keyboard experience as my $500+ Korean customs and far more enjoyable (for me) than Topre which unfortunately all of my friends LOVE.

The SSK from cpbuen was a great deal and I'm surprised it sat there so long unsold!!   If I didn't have so many already, I would have had one of my friends in the SF area grab it for me.

And yes, a Bolt and LED fully restored Maxx board is priceless imho.   Worth EVERY penny he asks for them!!   My 2c for the 1c that it's worth     ;D ;D

And BTW, I do know who purchased this particular board.   And lets just say it will be well taken care of .....

Industrial SSKs sell for $1K+

Seriously though, what makes them so sought after? What makes them different?

The color of the plastic molded casing.   And the fact that they're rare and difficult to come by.   They do look cool with the black IBM sticker!!

And it's not exactly "mint"

These starting bids mean nothing. Nobody sells the keyboards for their starting bid price anyways.
