I really want a few latching switches (push on, push off) for function keys. the only place I found to buy them is onlinecomponents.com (http://www.onlinecomponents.com/cherry-electrical-mx1a31nn.html?p=11075424) They have a minimum 100 piece order requirement though (they are out of stock and their supplier requires batches of 100). The switches cost $6.95 each (price break to $4.55 at 250 switches). Is there interest in getting a group buy together for some of these? I'd say minimum buy in of 5 switches (I don't want to have to send out 100 individual packages).
Edit:
Head over to deskthority and order them through 7bit, he can get them for $1.35 each, and we should have enough to meet the MOQ now.

I'd be in for 5.
These are unobtainable, and are very interesting to use on alternative keyboards.
Good luck!

7bit in Deskthority sells those too if enough orders are gathered. Price is 1,20€ per switch. They're in preorder phase right now but 7bit has said that he has way too few preorders right now for him to be able to fill the MOQ for those. Contact him and ask how many orders does he need and start gathering orders :thumb: http://deskthority.net/group-buys-f50/cherry-mx-taking-pre-orders-t2760.html
-
You might want to change the title to Cherry Lock as that's what most people would call them.
-
Spammy is right.
I call 'em MX Lock Switches.
I'd be in for 5 of them. Let's talk to 7 bit.
-
Dumb question but I've got to ask: when locked does the switch keep the contacts closed?
I totally want to use this as a keep-alive function on one of the +4 F positions on my 108.
You know what I mean? Sometimes I don't want to log off and I don't want my computer to sleep or time out on me. In these cases, I would just push this button.
Cheers,
K
Update: I'd buy 5-10 of these as well... if they're doing what I hope they're doing.
-
I'd also take 5-10
-
In for 10
-
In for 5!
-
Ok, looks like there's enough interest. I'll check out the buy on deskthority too, if we can get it through them cheaper I can buy there too and send them out.
-
In for 2. Its not much but it's all I can do.
-
Interested in 10.
-
The deskthority thread isn't near their MOQ, but I posted to ask what the situation is. Will report back when I have info.
-
I could use some more of these. :) I'm in for 5-10.
-
I'd be in for 5-10 aswell.
-
Just to update there's 77 counted for in this thread.
[taking 10 for everyone who said 5-10]

In for 5

Update from the deskthority buy, their MOQ is 4000, we would need to order 800 to get the order to go through (about $1055 USD) They would be only about $1.35 each though.

they have 3200 orders?? that is impressive. I asked and they don't have anywhere near MOQ :)) ::)
At $1.35 I'll buy 20
-
Pretty much means if we reach 150 switches ordered (at the above posted $7 per switch), it would be a better deal to go through deskthority. The deskthority buy turnaround is 60 days, the online components is 22 weeks.
-
Count me in!

ill take 50

I really want a few latching switches (push on, push off) for function keys. the only place I found to buy them is onlinecomponents.com (http://www.onlinecomponents.com/cherry-electrical-mx1a31nn.html?p=11075424) They have a minimum 100 piece order requirement though (they are out of stock and their supplier requires batches of 100). What is their price when we order 800, or 1000 switches from them?
I got 460 orders plus those from this thread makes around 600.
Might be a way to get them sooner.
:-)
-
im in, not sure how many yet, will depend on the final pricing structure.

yeah what is the next price break after 250?
if they're closer to $1.50 rather than $7 I'll naturally get at least twice as many.

Price is $1055 USD for 800 switches

It's a sliding scale, since the smallest quantity I can order is 800 switches for $1055, the more ways the order is split the better the price gets.
onlinecomponents requires an order of 100 @~$7/switch, but deskthority has a deal at 800 switches for ~$1.35 per switch. If we order more than 150 switches at $7 it becomes a better deal to just buy the 800 from deskthority and split the order quantity by giving everybody more switches. The requirement here is that the total money collected must be either $700 for the onlinecomponents, or $1055 for deskthority.
-
I thought deskthority was nowhere near the MOQ to get switches at $1.5
800/4000

You realize the guy you quoted is 7bit from deskthority.....they don't have any lock switches either....they have an MOQ of 4000 and have 460 orders of their own....

Yes, I'm in direct contact with him about the specifics, but it looks like we can get them ordered through him relatively soon.
-
This is all somewhat confusing then because how can we get them if the MOQ is 4000 and together both places only have ~600 orders?
-
Its a bit complicated, but we only need 800 to place our order.
-
so $1055 for 800 makes 1.31 a switch?
I'll take 25 at that price.
-
And just to clarify these are genuine cherry mx lock switches right? There was a guy a while back trying to pass off some chinese knockoffs for cheap.
-
Yes, 7bit said he was ordering direct from Cherry, and if I order it would be through onlinecomponents, which are an offcial Cherry distributor.
-
All right... I did some googling and convinced myself that this is the switch that I want (I think so anyway).
http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Lock
I think it's probably ridiculous to pay $7 a switch for these though. I mean seriously.. we really have to give 7bit a shot here.
-
At $1.31 each I'm interested in 40.

At onlinecomponents.com the pricing schedule looks like this:
100-249 : $6.95
250 + : $4.55
No discounts beyond 250.
Is there no other source?
The only other distributed who seems to carry them as far as I can tell is Sager:
http://www.eciaauthorized.com/search?pn=MX1A31NN
NOTE: I just submitted a request for quote @500 pieces to Sager (I reduced the total part count because of last minute GB defections/flakiness). I'll post an update as soon as I get word.
7bit: early on in this thread it sounded like you might have a lead on a better deal than $4.55USD @250 min. Is that correct? Just asking because I don't want to bark up the wrong tree or add to the confusion.
Cheers,
K

Looks like we can get them as low as $1.35 each through 7bit, but we need to group with him for an order of at least 800.
-
Seeing as how he already has ~460 orders that shouldn't be hard to do, especially at that price.
-
I'd buy at least 5 and up to 100 depending on the estimated price.

I just wanted extra switches, but now I want a full grid of lock keys for no real purpose :)

In, depending on what the price ends up being.

I would be in for 5 as it would be a novel thing to have if I ever do a custom board
-

i like them for function layers :)
change your whole board until you hit that key again
-
These sound really interesting but I don't know if I'd find a use for them, less I was trying to get rid of the caps lock key and place one on the shift key to allow for caps lock functionality.
If you need help reaching MOQ I'd be willing to chip in for the novelty of it though.
-
Please make a groupbuy, I still can't think how could this help my games & work. But I might get at least 5-10, more depends on the price.
-
If this becomes a group buy, I'd probably be in for a handful.
-
I'd be interested in purchasing 5.
-
Sounds like a cool switch but I don't know what I need it for. Locking switches would also have to be specially programmed as well, right?
-

Use it in a build as a second (redundant) fn key for locking fn layers. Use it as a shift key for a true caps lock key. There are a few fun uses for it.

Yeah, maybe a separate keypad with it ... Got it!! Toggle a long walk in Arma 3 ;D toggle spacebar (hand tool) in photoshop?
-
Will be interested to get 5-10 depending on final price..
-
Well if it's only a dollar or two each, I may as well get a few.
-
I'd really like an update on MOQ and pricing.
As far as I'm concerned we're all paying $4.55/ea right now.
-
I tried submitting a request for a quote at Sager.com and their response to me was, "we are unable to quote you on this order: this part is onsolete and no replacement has been identified."
Yes, this sucks. Anybody have a line on any of these?

If we can get them for 1.35 each I would be down for 5-6.

7bit's buying them from cherry directly I believe, not sure how he's gotten MOQ from 4000 down to 800 but he's got something going on or so it would appear form what has been posted.

Yup still waiting for a follow up.

I would be in for some..
If numbers mattered maybe around 7...
Would be interesting to see a whole board made from these switches. You could give them to a friend and watch their pain

So, looks like we should order through 7bit at deskthority. Our orders with his will meet the MOQ to get the order in, and he can get them for $1.35 each so jump on it!

how do we order? do we make an acc over there or what?

All righty... this is my first time through 7bits "bot" ordering system. Wish me luck. 7bit: my userid on DT is the same as it is here (korrelate). All of my heatware reviews are based on transactions that have originated here in GH.
At 1.20EUR/1.55 USD I'm in for 25.
Cheers,
Joe

So it is "MXLOCK" under "Cherry MX/NN Plate mount"? Anyone preorder over there?
Is the price fixed at 1.20EUR each? Thanks for the help.

Yes, it's MXLOCK. Based on the prices I see for MXLOCK200 and MXLOCK800 I think it's safe to assume the price will be fixed at 1.20 EUR each.
-
OK,
so this means that we all order from 7bit's bot at DT?
-
Yes, 7bit said price is fixed. But duuno delivery date.
What's MXLOCK200 and MXLOCK800 means anyway?
Thanks geniekid.

I'm assuming MXLOCK200 and MXLOCK800 mean 200 switches and 800 switches. Comes out to 1.095 EUR/switch and .99875 EUR/switch, respectively. So we could conceivably save a couple of bucks if we pooled together a ton of orders but the work required to organize that outweighs the savings, IMHO.
-
Two words:
Shift Lock!
-
Just got my invoice for my 7bit/DT order. I ordered MXLOCK. Can't wait to get these puppies.
Also... I just realized: you have to pay via Google Wallet 7bit's GBs: he don't take no stinkin PP.
7bit... if you're reading (I'll repost on DT if necessary anyway): I'm setting up a Google Wallet account tonight to pay this invoice.
Cheers,
K
UPDATE 20140922: 7bit/mashby can take PP payments. At this time you need only text PAYPAL to CherryMX.
-
Also... I just realized: you have to pay via Google Wallet 7bit's GBs: he don't take no stinkin PP.
You should be able to PM "PAYPAL" to CherryMX to get a Paypal invoice. You will have to pay an extra fee with Paypal (4%). Paying with Google Wallet does not have a fee.
-
Yeah, MXLOCK 200 and MXLOCK800 are for orders of 200 and 800 switches. We're getting in at the 800 switch price. I believe turnaround is 6 weeks once 800 is reached. Shouldn't be long, he had over 450 before I pushed our interest his way, I ordered 20 at that price!
-
Thanks for the heads-up about the payment, guys.
I'm gonna order MXLOCK too, but wanna buy more switches, cos the shipping cost is unbeatable :D

just curious: I was about to setup Google wallet account but then the app asked me for ssn and i thought about it and came to the conclusion that there is basically no f@@@@@n way I'm giving google my personal details.
Anybody tried getting a PP invoice from a 7bit GB any time in the past couple months?

I think i'll be in for 5. I could probably use them for the fn key
-
I'd like at least 5, maybe more...
-
How do I order?
-
How do I order?
I'm pretty sure about the following - 7bit's ordering protocols are interesting and there may be other ways to do this so take this for what it's worth:
1. Compose your order. I say this because 7bit's "store" is really a BOT and in order to purchase you have to "program" it with "commands." See the following link for examples (as well as a sample PM at the bottom of this post):
http://deskthority.net/group-buys-f50/cherry-mx-taking-pre-orders-t2760.html (http://deskthority.net/group-buys-f50/cherry-mx-taking-pre-orders-t2760.html)
2. Create an account on Deskthority.
3. PM the order that you have composed to "CherryMX" on Deskthority.
4. Pay the invoice that you received from CherryMX (further instructions will be included with the invoice).
SAMPLE PM TO CHERRYMX:
/*
MXLOCK 25
getbent@now.com
ADDRESS
Ernie Fiddlesticks
123 Main St
Anywhere, NY 00000
United States
*/
Everything above between, but not including the "comment" tokens "/*" & "*/" would be included in the text of the PM you send, from your Deskthority account to "CherryMX" account on Deskthority. This example above would :
1. Create an order for Ernie Fiddlesticks from 123 Main St, Anywhere NY 00000.
2. Associate the email address "getbent@now.com" with Ernie Fiddlesticks.
3. Add 25 MXLOCK switches to Ernie's order.
4. Generate an invoice (that you will receive in a few days' time) to Ernie via Google Wallet.
In any event, this is my first time ordering from 7bit on DT and the above is almost exactly what I have done so far and I haven't been chastised for anything yet, so I think this is pretty straightforward.
Also.. if you need/want a Paypal invoice, I just checked with 7bit and he confirmed what uns211 suggested above: just send a PM to CherryMX with the word PAYPAL in the text of the PM. I just did this a few moments ago, my order may have lapsed (because you have 7 days to pay the original invoice and I am right on, if not slightly beyond this threshold). But... we'll see how it works.
In any event, I'm glad that I'm finally getting around to ordering something from 7bit - I'm a big fan of this BOT stuff that he's set up. My guess is it's all Python in the background. Perl maybe? I don't know, but if this isn't an ordering method with the word "GEEK" written on it I don't know what is.
Good Luck!! I know that there are a lot of people here who are hoping that you're going to place a huge order for these switches ASAP!
:p

Yep, I paid via paypal, no issue.

So ... If I wanna pay by paypal, I send a second PM with "PAYPAL" in the text, then I'll get a paypal invoice? Thanks for the help guys ;)

PP payment made. I can't wait for these things.

Can you use LEDs with these? SIP sockets are probably impossible right?
-
Can you use LEDs with these? SIP sockets are probably impossible right?
These do have LED holes in them, but they are off-center and therefore will likely not be compatible with the LED hole locations on PCBs. I have not yet tried to add LEDs to my lock switch I've used, as it's a matrix-wired board and I have no LEDs on it at all (though with it lacking a PCB, it would probably be easiest to add them to that board).

Does anyone knows whether the bottom part of the MX Lock is the same as on any MX switch? So one could simply swap the stem and top part of the switch of the MX lock without desoldering of the switch?

From the pictures on the DT Wiki, it doesn't look like the bottoms are the same.

You can have a better look for yourself at the link below but I'm pretty certain that the bases of the locking switch and the standard switch are not interchangeable.
http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Lock (http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Lock)
The reasons that stand out to me are:
1. The positioning of the leds in locking vs. position in std. switch.
2. The inclusion/location of the locking wheel in the locking switch vs. the same location in the std switch.
If you're just going to replace caps/num/scroll though, I'd imagine that a soldapult and a soldering iron would make short work of this.
Update: LOL - CptBadAss beet me to the punch.
Also: 7bit's GB is currently at 612 preorders (or thereabouts). Once he gets to 800 preorders he can buy. You can't find these in stock anywhere, last I checked so get your orders in!! :p

Will see. Doesnt look much different to me. Would be super easy to just swap the stem and top part you know.. Definitely gonna try it If i get my hands on the Lock. Thanks for the responds!

But as was mentioned the actual locking mechanism won't fit in a regular switch bottom.

Hi all. Just signed up to say that I'd be in for 5-10

Just put in a order for 25.
Is this buy still going on or what is happening? New to ordering entirely, I have no idea what is going on... :/
Currently CherryMX lists as having >500 stock. (http://deskthority.net/group-buys-f50/cherry-mx-taking-pre-orders-t2760.html) What does that even mean? (I kept reading about them needing 800 orders? I guess that went down already?)

Welcome Aboard the LockSwitch Train!
I've got an order in for 25 myself. It's been a while since I checked in, but no: I don't think the MOQ (or the actual quantity ordered so far) has gone down. Still 800 to the best of my knowledge and when I check last month I think 7bit was at like 650 - 675 or thereabouts. It's getting closer, we're just not there yet. This one's going to take a bit longer (I've already been waiting for several months) because there really isn't much demand for this switch.
IMHO, this makes a perfect "keep-alive" switch. if I don't want to get logged off of something because of inactivity I'm gonna just press this puppy. Can't wait.

I keep getting invoices from 7bot for these guess I should pay it one of these days.

Ahh thank you for the explanation.
I suppose nothing else to do than wait and to bait others onto the train with keys?
Just a little bit more... someone make that full keyboard with these switches already, that should push it over.

I apologize if I'm necrobombing this thread, but like another has before me, I stopped being a lurker in order to sign up for this buy!
I'll take 5, for sure. These could be real handy for some fun builds.

We're buying them off 7bit on deskthority once Cherry makes them (I think he has hit the MOQ)

Sent a pm to CherryMX over on deskthority for 20 of these. Aside from my k70 this seems to be the start for myself a semi-custom board.

Almost forgot i was in this. Are we getting switches soon then?

:(
If you look at page 134 on the thread link posted by duckness you'll note that 7bit says MXLOCK are "delayed further."
I'm just really curious... have we made MOQ and are waiting on Cherry to produce/deliver or
are we still waiting to make the MOQ (800 for 7bit's GB I think).
Cheers,
K
I just realized that there's another obvious use for these switches beyond keep-alive functionality: Shift-Lock!! Just like old typwriters used to have. I'm going to jam this in my r.h.s. shift key just for this purpose. Not really useful, but then again neither is my r.h.s. shift key. At least now there will be some temptation to use it.

So what exactly is the status on this order for now? Is it... *ahem* "locked" up?
-
Any updates?
-
Last post was in April, is it safe to bump?
What's going on with this GB? The other already finished shipping months ago.. Anyone have any info/updates?
Should I just get a refund from 7bit..? xD

You may as well cancel your order with 7bit and hop aboard the IC for round 2 here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/12VmaQ5AlhY6tp5wsNHQ8Jifrom1myO49rR09ShuGwKQ/viewform
