Title: Cherry oddity
Post by: Photekq on Tue, 26 August 2014, 00:13:58
I doubt anyone else has one of these.. :))

I just noticed that the numpad '3' key on my 3100sau set is the wrong profile  It seems the dye-sublimator wasn't too happy, since the font is incredibly faded even though the set is basically unused.

My only question is.. does it make the set more or less valuable?

I wonder where the set is from, if it was scavenged from several keyboards. Cherry G80-11800 has the numpad-3 in that profile, but I haven't seen any of those keyboards with dye-sub keys.

It's my guess that a worker just put the wrong profile keycap on the board.

Rather, I think it is more likely a worker put the wrong profile keycap on the mold before dyesub.
Perhaps there was an issue during the sorting process.
I had a set of Compaq 11800 laser etched Thick PBT with that profile but I never seen dyesub like yours before.
I will take the picture of those Compaq 11800 Thick PBT tomorrow to compare.

Here they are, taken from my phone, sorry for potato pics  ;D
It's true, thick PBT keycaps from Compaq 11800 have same profile.
Usually, Compaq 11800 has thin PBT but one of mine has thick.

When I saw the title 'Cherry Oddity' I was expecting a Photekq self portrait :P

I would agree with Binge, probably less valuable. Some collecting hobbies revel in mis-strikes, but even popular ones like stamps and coins don't always value errors like this. Ironically if there were 100 of them it is often more desirable than if its just a one-off mistake. Exceptions like if its a totally wrong colour may still be desirable, but this... probably not.

Still, always cool for a collector to have a few valueless conversation-pieces lying around.

Being wrong profile created a void for the dye sublimation film resulting in a poor contact, lighter color. I would consider it to have no effect on price, or a negative effect for having incorrect key profile.

I think it should be stored improperly generated phenomenon.

Just like when you are sunbathing, sunscreen does not smear to the place.

But this does not affect you,  favorite"her".
