I can't find one anywhere that isn't on back order. Anyone know where I can find one?
-
I think they have been discontinued. They show up here in the classifieds sometimes.

WASD v2/code? A little bit more expensive, but still a very decent board.

Blues in stock at Newegg, and there's a couple on eBay!

They havent been discontinued but certainly reduced in QTY/Availability due to the switch shortage. The switches were pushed towards newer items.

^^ Good to know, I thought CM was just moving on to newer boards!!

Kailh Revolution
Kailh is a life saver. They have taken a lot of the pressure off cherry. Outside of brown, we are pretty flush on Cherry switches now

KUL ES-87 gets a mention
It's the best out-of-the-box keyboard there is.
-
It is a little surprising they have been discontinued given their popularity. I thought this was the one CM would be selling for a while.

Go up a few posts, Carter confirmed they are just short on MX switches, not discontinued.

Managed to snag one off ebay for $75, its mx blues but I can live with that rather than having to settle for a linear switch.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out. Makes a lot more sense.

I wasn't expecting that from you Grim

How easy/hard would it be for someone with basic soldering skills to replace the alphanumeric switches on a qfr with mx clears?

Honestly it would have just been cheaper to buy the KUL with clears to start with.

This is more long term curiosity than me seriously about to invest in switches

Usually I try to read before I speak. But every once in a while I just blurt something out.

It's got ABS keycaps out of the box. Other than the ready availability of clears, I don't really know why people are going crazy for them.
What's so good about them? For me, my favorite out of the box keyboard would be a ducky with either there dye subs or engraved PBT keys.

Leopold 750R.
Own a piece of that royality today.

I absolutely love the QFRs and I hope that CM keeps making them indefinitely. It's a no-frills solidly built board with a great price point. I've converted a ton of people to the world of mechanical boards by pointing them at the QFR and the Rosewill RK-9000s. As an added bonus, you can swap in a Frosty Flake replacement controller and get a completely reprogrammable board.

It's all relative, but I find switch swaps to be trivially easy. Get a good chisel tip to maximize the contact area and turn your iron up to 650 degrees or so. Once the solder is molten, use a solder sucker (a wick works too, but isn't as convenient imo) and repeat. Once the solder's been removed, I pinch in the two tabs on the top of the switch and apply pressure to the plastic peg below. If you got all the solder, the switch pops right out. If you notice that there's a bit of solder left in the through hole and it's preventing removal, don't just fumble around with the iron to try and melt the remaining solder since you'll run the risk of lifting the pad if you apply too much heat. Instead, just apply flux to the area (optional, but I've found that it makes things easier for me), re-solder the switch, and then try sucking/wicking out the solder again. It goes really quickly once you've gotten into a rhythm.
Installing the new switches is super fast. Just snap the new ones in and then solder the two pins on the bottom.

$68 CM QFR.

Check frozencpu. :thumb:
I ordered a blue version because i had too much btc on my hands and no one wanted to sell it for btc, so i went a bit creative and ordered a keyboard from a modding company. :D
Its a great board though, no regrets.

Is CM going to restock the QFR or is it EOL, being replaced by the QFR-I?
-
The QFRs in ISO layouts disappeared from stores in Europe this spring right when Rapid-I was introduced but then they came back in the summer and there is now plenty in stock everywhere over here.
I think it is just the same thing happening in the US.
As the CM rep said above, there is a switch shortage and the switches they get go to new models first.
