Title: Anyone Do The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge?
Post by: mashby on Tue, 02 September 2014, 15:52:26
Anyone take part in the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge (http://www.alsa.org/fight-als/ice-bucket-challenge.html) yet? A friend of mine challenged me last week and I was just curious if anyone else had done it.

No sound at work, but classy as always!

PS: I like Mike Rowe's response. http://mikerowe.com/2014/08/not-throwing-cold-water-on-a-cause/

Thanks man!

I actually, shot, edited and posted it all from my iPhone. Kinda crazy that I was able to do all that from a dang phone.

My news feed was literally full of people doing it. I got nominated by my SO's dad, but I didn't do it as ALSA conduct animal testing.

So I just donated to Scotty's Little Soldiers instead.

Nope and wouldn't do it even if I saw a video nominating me.  It's a stupid waste of water, especially in a state with a drought going on.

...And I honestly don't get what dumping a tiny bucket of marginally cold water over your head has anything to do with ALS.

How else are you going to get people motivated about something somewhat obscure with no known cause  :p

Love it or hate it, the ice bucket challenge has already accomplished the brunt of its goals. The challenge has raised a good bit of money for ALS and more importantly has raised awareness for ALS itself.

:)

One uniquely bright fellow had 400 gallons of water dropped on him--aerially. He was hospitalized :blank:

Alps bucket challenge?  I have some desoldering to do then.  All proceeds go to buying me another keyboard I've been eyeing that should have brown Alps so I can compare them to tactile Green.

A group of friends, and I, decided to actually do something worthwhile and donated money. In total it was just under $8,000.

I can't post pics for some reason.

Anyway, the challenge is this:

If you are "challenged" by another then you have 2 options -

  1. Dump water over your head and get out of having to make a donation to an ALS foundation.
  2. Decline to dump water over your head and do the right thing by making a donation to an ALS foundation.

We donated specifically to this one since we are fans of his bourbon and some of the guys actually know him.

actually, if you don't donate and just want to spread awareness.. how about people actually talk about the damn thing before they dump water on themselves? most of the people i've seen say zero about ALS and just do it for the revines/likes/follows/upvotes and all that social network crap.

Yeah, but after it seemed like everyone was doing the former, it changed into doing both. So I just reverted back to the original form and donated instead of getting wet.

I would hope most of the funds are heading to a charity where the majority is dispersed :\ :\

I'd bet more than half of the "bucket people" don't even know that it's to raise awareness of ALS and they just wanted to follow the herd.

...but I agree with you, demik. The message has largely been lost.

Edit: and lots of people did both 1 and 2.

Is ALS still referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease still?

I agree with most of the sentiments here – the hype as has far surpassed the true intention. That's why I donated instead. However, you can't deny the fact that the marketing has been effective. It has raised a lot of money, it has raise a lot of awareness.

But what I like like most about it, is that this campaign has made people question the purpose of charity. Like most of you in this thread, the consensus seems to be more about the quality of the charity versus the popularity of it.

In my book, that's a net good thing

fck yes, just read Mike Rowe's response in Mike Rowe's voice, and what he's bringing to light makes perfect sense.

i remember in 2001, every charity was crying, crying that they didn't meet their usual donation amount, cuz... charities are basically corporations, they are run like a business.

oh and why were they crying? cuz everyone was donating to the 9-11 fund, red cross/cancer research all those organizations took a record low hit.

That's another reason I didn't donate to ALSA, because of the amount of money they pay their CEOs etc

The charity I donated to is run by the wife of a guy from my old regiment killed in Afghanistan, and I know it does good work, so that's why I was happy to donate to them.

actually youre supposed to donate either way, if you do the challenge you donate 10 bucks, if you dont do it within 24 hours you have to pay 100

This thread has been a bit of an eye opener, I had not given this charity any thought really and mostly ignored the people filling my Facebook feed with dumb videos.

While it sucks that a lot of CEO's of charities earn "too much", at the same time you are still donating at least something. This is better than waiting around for an alternative charity.

like the article says do your research for your intended charities.

The CEO of the Boys and Girls Club of America earned the highest pay in the group of $1.85 million, according to the survey. The Metropolitan Museum of Art CEO earned nearly $1.5 million, the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children paid its CEO nearly $1.2 million, while the National Jewish Health's head got over $1 million.

the larger the charity, the more justification they have with "administrative expense"

from memory the worst offender, (at least famous) is bono, his charity "raises awareness" 10m yearly donations, 1% goes to actually help the impoverished, while 50% goes to administrative expense.

and another, wyclef jean, his charity closed, this is an example of expanding too big with too much money all at once

in 2004, was small in its first years of operation, with assets amounting to only $37,000, but according to the New York Times, after the devastating 2010 earthquake, donations started pouring in.
Jean said he raised $1million in 24 hours after issuing a plea for help on Twitter. But rather than using the money to help the millions of displaced residents living on the quake-ravaged streets of Port-au-Prince, the Times reported that Yele funneled a large portion of the funds to pay for  'offices, salaries, consultants' fees and travel' to say nothing of Jean's family, friends and legal team.
In one case, the group allegedly shelled out $30,763 to fly Hollywood starlet Lindsay Lohan from New Jersey to a charity event in Chicago that raised $66,000.

Mishandled: Yele reportedly spent $9million of its $16million on office space, workers' salaries and food
About $600,000 in donations went toward Yele's headquarters, which have since been abandoned; another $375,000 was used to cover 'landscaping' costs; and more than $470,000 was spent on food and beverages.
The singer, who made an unsuccessful bid for Haiti's presidency in 2010, reportedly paid himself $100,000 to perform in a charity concert and gave his family over $500,000 for unspecified work. Also, $37,000 was paid by Yele to cover the rent of Jean’s Manhattan studio.
