Depending on the type of pictures you want to take....  the lens makes a larger difference usually vs the camera..

Camera bodies are all already quite capable.. and most modern day inventions post 2000s have been Icing on the cake.. but nothing earth-shattering.

Fuji or Sony mirrorless, get the most expensive model you can afford/justify.

Go for a Canon 600D or 650D. Buy only body. Buy lens depending on what you want to shoot.

This is the best bet for OP.

DSLR would only be the way to go if you already have an expensive collection of lenses, or if you're looking to spend a lot and use it to make money.

Otherwise, mirrorless all the way. Sony makes some great ones.

I'd probably lean more towards fuji for the op tho, sony is a bit more on the expensive side.

Dustins photos lure in another victim towards a new camera purchase :) recently picked up a nikon d3300 w/ 40mm micro(macro) lens. As a complete novice to photography it has been suiting me well and is relatively user friendly. I agree with the above post that you should pick up just a body and then a seperate lens for your specific needs. Also canon t5's have been going on sale recently i believe kits are around $500 not a bad starter mirrored DSLR from what i hear

Fuji is micro four-thirds, hence it costs less, and still delivers very well (especially Fuji). Sony uses APS-C sized sensors (and even a couple of full frame), the same that Nikon puts in some DSLRs, so it's more expensive. I'd say Sony makes the highest end mirrorless cameras.

Some (like the NEX 3N) can be had with kit lens for $350 (power zoom compact), which is not unreasonable at all considering the sensor.

the lens is the most important aspect.

get something in the 30 to 50mm range and make sure it's a macro lens for the sharpest pics.  alao get a dust blower, because you WILL see ALOT of dust that is too small to see with the naked eye and glasses.
