Title: GTX 980!
Post by: Willy on Thu, 18 September 2014, 23:18:08
Oooh yes.
It's here.
Are you ready for 50% more rays?
50% more polys?
Or maybe just 50% more FPS?

I don't know about you, but I'm peeing my pants over it.
Now if only I had some cash to blow on a few.

I'm literally this close || to buying a brand new PC, it's long (so damn long) overdue. I haven't had a new PC in like 4 years, and the last one was a Gateway OEM piece of **** that I got dirt cheap. I deserve this. I earned this!

Eh, I'm still rockin' the 570.
Good enough.

Awesome power for sure..

I'm a little dissuaded by the crop of games though..

It really doesn't seem like anything coming out these days that Warrants the expense..

You'd buy this card,  and crysis is still the best looking game out there..   and guess what,, the world still just plays dota and cs go..

so like,  what was the POINT of it all...

BUhhh...  if You had a 24 core server... you could do ur own VPN... and probably transcode 1080p blurays. in REAL TIME....

Op _Willy_  wtf , you got me all excited about 50% more shtick...

I just saw the benchmarks,  you LIAR... (http://emoticoner.com/files/emoticons/onion-head/uhuhuh-onion-head-emoticon.gif?1292862523)

it's more like 15-25% from previous Generation..

Good power savings numbers pre overclocking..   but performance wise.. it's only 40-50% increase compared to 680 7970(r280) cards...

R290  is still a better buy because of better performance in Madvr.. and comparable performance in games.

Not worth the upgrade from 780 sli... but yay new hardware!!!

Not worth the upgrade from 780 sli... but yay new hardware!!!

I gave one of my 7970 from cfx setup to cousin..

I'm considering getting a 290x for movie season to use along with SWIFT PG278Q under madvr which will actually consume 100% of the 290x

but,, the cheaper route would be to get a ulmb 1080p monitor for movie season.. but so far.. they haven't released a nexgen 1080p ulmb monitor yet like the pg278q..

I've been wanting to build a new PC since 2006.

Every year I say I'm going to do it but wait.

Especially because of the small changes in gpu cards every year.

This is the first one I wanted because of the power savings.

I wanted to get the 980 direct cu version. Its over clocked by a good amount out of the factory. Hopefully, will be quieter than reference.

The problem is that being overclocked and quieter means the card is designed to take up 3 slots.

dude.. don't get the direct CU..

There was this corsair thing at the trade show..

They're making water cooling brackets for  (Reference Cards)

So on High Power Gpus like the 980  R290  780 780Ti  Titan..

You should get reference, and wait for the corsair bracket.. (which covers the vrm)

OR you could cut into the default cooler  and mount the AIO coolers on your own..

(I would do that ^^)  but some other people have trouble and baby their hardware hindering them from releasing its true potential..

I mean.. seriously  the Hardware's sole purpose is to generate more FPS,  what good is babying your hardware, it's just depreciating, and becoming rapidly obsolete..

Yep! I love looking at custom cooling and I like my own but... once the corsair AIO for gpus is out, I'm done.

Maintaining a loop makes me want to hang myself... ugh

yea.. epic pain in the arse..

I think if I get a 290x,  I may decide to cut into it,  with enough space so I can mount a 120mm cpu heatsink like I did on  my mother's 7870myst..

vs the water bracket..  because the corsair one's not out yet..

and if I get the dwood stuff, I'd probably have to cut anyway for the vrm section.

Very tempted by this but will probably go with the 970 so it doesn't destroy my wallet, my GPU is the oldest part of my computer still have a 5870 :) running with a 4.5ghz i7 so it's about time I upgraded.

Did Corsair officially confirm they were making this? Or, was it just proof of concept?

The 980 was just announced. Is it already confirmed to work with the 980 reference card?

ah.. ur right.. not -confirmed-...   but if they WERE to make these brackets, it would be for the top end cards..

and these are Full on brackets that replaces the base plate with complete vrm coverage

the issue is.. you kind of NEED to do this.. because you can't lock clocks on nvidia.. they don't let you..

So the only way to get maximum boost is to pull the temperature down by a whole lot..

False. This is an very slight incremental upgrade, especially if you have Titan Blacks or 780 Ti's.

If you actually did get 50% more FPS - totally worth it.

I read the review at Anandtech.com, http://www.anandtech.com/show/8526/nvidia-geforce-gtx-980-review/17, and for playing video games, which is all I care about, this new GTX 980 will only give you about 10% better FPS than a GTX 780 Ti.  That is enough of an increase for me to waste my money, but I'm a fool, especially with computer parts.  No normal person should spend $580 for 10% increase in FPS.  It's st00pid.  But it's st00pid fun.

As I said before, for me this card is great.

Mainly because of the increase in performance along with low heat and wattage.

I'm probably one of the few people overly concerned with my electric bill.

Um... it's low heat and wattage compared to cards of similar performance level..

HOWEVER,  the card itself is NOT by any means a Green Device.. (http://www.cute-factor.com/images/smilies/onion/073.gif)

Get amd GPU... support Red Team.. against the tyranny of Intel..

290 and 290x are pretty much 85-100% as fast as the 980,  but uses about 15-30% more power..

I'm not too familiar with AMD stuff nowadays and my last and card had terrible drivers that wouldn't go away. So AFAIK the 290 series is meant to stack against the 700 series right?
Is AMD gonna release something new later this year?
I'll look into this more when I'm not on my mobile.

Considering you can get the 290 for $400 and 290x for $480ish  both w/ 3 free games.. (good games)

Probably a better deal than 980..

from a 460  everything above $200 will seem like beasts..  the 7970 (r280) which can be had for $200 round black friday is  2x as fast,  almost 2.5x if you add overclocking.

True, but it wasn't until recently that I started running into problems. When I upgrade I will upgrade the entire pc and use the old one as a server or give my parents another pc to work on.
The SSD is dead now so I'm temporarily running a laptop with a GT640M LE on a 95% overclock. :p

why would you do that?  780ti is a better card.

Very tempted to wait for the 990Ti, but will likely buy 980 due to impatience.
I've been running a 560Ti for the past 4 years so it'll be a huge upgrade either way.

For my set up(4kscreen) I had two options
1st being, keep 780ti $500 Craigslist  used second for sli upgrade psu
Or upgrade to new 980 $500 newegg new second 980 sli keep using psu (Supposedly 80-100watts less power)

I am curious to know, how it's better?

With those power savings, you'll be able to sleep through your over-night renders without ear-plugs.
But soon it could be the time to grab up a second used 780ti for quite the cost-effective boost if you're already lucky enough to be sitting on one.

Ah, another big-ass brick. You know, there have actually been reports of these things being so heavy that the shear forces start to bend and crack motherboards after a couple of years. #urbanlegends

no it's real..

but the motherboard doesn't crack.. it's the PCIE port   overtime it will rip it in half.. like for realzies..  rip in HALF..

This was the second reason I bought the case I did.  The video card hangs vertcally from the top of the case.  The bottom has 3 180mm fans that just shoves all the heat straight up and out.  Plus it takes 95% of the weight of the card off the slot.

LOL, You n00b..

You can take Any case with flat sides.. and have it sit on the front..  thus achieving the same orientation you've sought.

HOWEVER,  do note that GPU coolers that have heat pipes are designed to face either Down, Or Up..   NOT vertical.

The reason is  the liquid in the pipe moves more efficiently in the correct orientation..    Whereas, if the card was hung..  the liquid will pool at an end that takes longer for it to wick back to the hot section of the pipe..

The difference is usually around 5 Celcius  between vertical and horizontal.

IDEALLY, you'd want the gpu facing UP.. that way the liquid will most efficiently cycle back to the CORE.

I have an aftermarket cooler on mine, so even with a 5° dissadvantage over proper orientation I am still running cooler than a stop setup in proper orientation.

I will never run a performance video card for long on stock cooler after my experience with the 280.  For me the cost of an aftermarket cooler far exceeds the extra lifetime gained from cooler operating temps.

Considering you can get the 290 for $400 and 290x for $480ish  both w/ 3 free games.. (good games)

Probably a better deal than 980..

Again.. this is politically motivated,  as I don't want intel becoming the new world order. Umbrella corporation... dun dunn dunnnnn....

You know you have a good point. Still 28nm fab.
I wanted to get a new monitor and gfx card but now that I think about it ... Might be a good idea to old off on a new monitor for DP 1.3 to kick in and wait for the Pascal/Volta micro-architecture,
Maybe that freesynch stuff might actually be good (still wouldn't hold my breath though)

I don't want to come off as a negative-nelly.. but these are well trodden paths in hobby hardware

the card will be obsolete well before it reaches life expectancy.....  this is the same reason why water cooling CPUs has become meaningless...

You can make an argument for aftermarket if you're going for Higher overclock.. but  almost all AIR cooled solutions on graphics cards are wholly inadequate because they are all designed while holding on to a Fatal Flaw..

Blowing air _ towards the card.. THis is STUPID...   They wised up for CPUs, but because graphics cards still occupy that archaic shape and orientation, it must have a slot cooler..

Meanwhile.. This is the PROPER way to cool your graphics card..

Why skip 800 series :I #800seriesthedream

probably because they don't want it compared to the Nvidia 8800 series  which were Pivotal game changers @ the time from 7900gtx   almost 50% boost in performance..

the 980 is a very small increment from 7xx...  ~10-20%

it's kind of like retiring jersey numbers in sports.

My GTX 275 had temps around 85°c under load with a stock cooler, whereas a pretty cheap 3-fan aftermarket solution got that down to 60°c and much less when idle, including a decent overclock.

Those single-fan, blow out the back plastic encased coolers are just lousy enough that even a LOL physics solution will make a marked difference. Nice custom job though.

the reason they keep the single fan solution as reference is because so many people have poor airflow in their case,

so if they used the triple fan type,  the case would heat up so badly, everything would burn down.

EVGA isn't as hardcore yet, only 2 fans for them

my point is.. they have to assume you have crappy airflow (for reference) to not burn down people's computers.

The only reason I can think of to get new monster cards, is to enable SSAA on games..

SSAA looks so good.... but the cost is enormous..  MSAA looks so crappy and over-sharpens to the point that you lose depth on complicated objects like trees..

4x titan black w/the 6gb ram actually makes sense if you want say.. 8x ssaa on 25x16..

but then go 4k, and you're SOL again.. LOLOLOL...

Wouldn't matter to me.  I would have an aftermarket cooler on it inside of a week.  But I am the exception that doesn't have an issue changing the warranty.  Plus last I checked checked, changing the cooler does not technically void the warranty on EVGA cards.  But to have the warranty honored the stock cooler has to be put back on.
