it was fixed for a while, but it seems to be back agin

You mean like how they don't work if you try to use one after quoting a message that includes a picture?

Been like that for a long time.

I do believe this all started with the introduction of the

Code: [Select]

[more] [/more] tags. The emoticons work for me unless the reply contains a quoted photo and depending on who, what , where I'm replying to sometimes I'll delete the quoted photo so the emoticon will work.
