Damn. guess I had the most worn down ones ever. Literally almost not feedback at all. So mushy it makes rubber dome feel snappy

This has been my experience. I think that decades-old foam is usually lifeless at best.

there are several generations of keytronic capacitive, most feeling pretty bad. The vintage "logo" switch with sphericals from the late 1970s and early 1980s is probably the best.
