Title: New shark in the hood!
Post by: Halverson on Tue, 23 September 2014, 17:53:06
Hey everyone! First post here on GeekHack! :)

Name is Halverson, but you can call me Halverso for short :)

Little about me:
-like long walks on the beach
-ice cream
-sharks
-colors

So after lurking so long, I have finally decided to get my first mechanical keyboard! There are so many choices though, I have no idea what to get. What color? What switches? I hear topre is amazing, but what is the deal with the price? What cherry switch are they comparable to? There seems to be a lot of action around old alps too, maybe I should buy a blue alps board?

I also really like those things called Click Clacks and Bro Caps. How do I get those? I would like to buy some but are they always so expensive?

Looking forward to hanging out here and meeting all the cool people!

Much love!
-Halverso

WELCOME MAN!!!

I think you should look into getting the Logitech G710+ or the G910+ Orion! Very solid boards.

Welcome to geekhack!!  I think quite a few people here like ice cream, sharks, and colors, so you're in good company!   :thumb:

epzy's recommendations are solid, I would recommend you also consider boards from Ducky and Filco, they are quite well-regarded.  If you want to go "end game" (lol), look into a Kustom.  ;)

Click Clacks and Bro Caps are unfortunately kind of hard to come by.  :(  Shoot me a PM with your address and I'll get one sent to you though.  :)

Cheers!

Welcome to GH!

You seem like a mega kawaii sharku-chan. I rike you.

A good starting place is a Razer Blackwidow. They come with brand new innovative mechanical switches called Kahlil. They are super fast and efficient with higher actuation points. They'll make you a better gamer and typist.

Just buy a HHKB and call it a day, of course.

But an HHKB isn't backlit. How are you going to MLG in the dark if you can't see the keyboard? Plus, HHKB is just an overhyped rubber dome. The rubber domes will eventually stiffen up and crack. Kahlil switches are made of high grade plastic that has been tested to work for 50+ million key presses. The stem would never break when taking the keycap off...

Lol @ this 'Sent' guy recommending buying a rubber dome. He's looking for a mech, c'mon dude. Razer and Logitech have some of the best mech keyboards on the market... the price tag ain't bad either.

I forgot those new Kahlil switches have been tested for 50+ million key presses and backlight does increase your WPM.  True story.  Still, my opinion is clearly right because reasons.
