Title: Kiibohd 9 - Bay Area Monthly Keyboard Meetup - 2014/10/25
Post by: HaaTa on Wed, 24 September 2014, 19:32:20
Sorry about the delay, I've...been sick, and busy. Also heading to Japan for a couple weeks  :D

nuclearsandwich has graciously offered to let us have the meetup at GitHub  :thumb:

October 25th 2014 @ 1 PM - GitHub HQ

Not sure what's happening with food, but there's lots of drinks at GitHub (on site bar).
There's actual meeting rooms at GitHub so I can make a presentation (anyone else want to do a presentation?).

Talking with Andrew from Massdrop, I think the focus of this meetup is going to be keycaps.
I'll bring my usual assortment of old keyboards, but I'll curate the selection based upon keycaps.

Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
If there are strong opinions we can also move the meetup date to Nov. 8th.
Please indicate which dates (Oct. 25th/Nov. 8th) you can attend.

(GeekHack mod, please sticky this topic, and un-sticky the old meetup thread)

Nov 8 is slightly better, but I’ll probably show up on either day.

I’ll bring like 20 assorted sets of loose Alps-mount keycaps, and maybe a few examples actually stuck onto some keyboards.

I’m also happy to do a quick presentation about my personal hypotheses about optimizing keycap profiles.

Awesome!
Thanks nuclearsandwich for the facilities, I guess rank has its privileges :)
I look forward to it, as always.

Address is

88 Colin P. Kelly Jr Street
San Francisco, CA
NORTH AMERICA

Our AV team has been doing a lot of weekend events lately so I'm not sure if we'll be able to get a projector set up for slides but our first floor has huuge lunch tables that will be great for showing of keyboards and half of my collection is at the office already.

Goat Hill Pizza is a nearby option for easy deliciousness. 21st Amendment Brewpub and American Grilled Cheese Kitchen are also just around the corner.

Right?? Can't go wrong with that, it seems.

I will not be attending myself, but would like to send my XTant keyboard - a custom layout capacitive buckling spring keyboard - to be evaluated by you guys. I plan to make kits available in the near future so that others can build these too. Attendees would be invited to type on it and examine the parts I have selected to make up the kits. I am soliciting suggestions and comments (anonymous if you like) to make it better.

I'm planning to bring the Realforce 87U with silencing mod that I brought last time - thinking of selling it. Am I allowed to do that at the meetup?

Awesome, I'll try to bring my Poker II with Midnight DCS as well to show off. I'll just post the RF on the classifieds section if no one wants to buy it at the meetup. I felt it would be best if some local Geekhackers could check out the silencing mod before I let the keyboard go.

It's been requested that I bring my 456GT. So it's coming even though it weighs as much as the train car I'll be bringing it on.

As far as fitting the keycap theme. I've not got anything really special. Some Zenith or Omnikey doubleshots, some Apple PBT Dyesub, a lot of recent SP stuff. The Round 4 Sphericals on my Orion are pretty cool but I don't think I'm bringing two heavy keyboards unless I bring one up to SF earlier this week.

Don’t worry about bringing anything. There should be more than enough interesting stuff from other folks that no one will get too bored. (Or also, if you get bored, feel free to leave any time.)

But also feel free to bring anything you want to show off.

travvy and radio_killah, it'll be great to meet you both. No need to worry about bringing anything.

As a warning that slipped my mind, to anyone driving cars. There is a world series game at AT&T Park (not two blocks from GitHub HQ) starting at 5:07. This means two things:

1: We're not going to want to leave HQ from 3:30 - 5:15
2: Parking is gonna be $$$$$, if you can park elsewhere and take Bart or Caltrain, do it!

Also if there's any baseball fans who want to stay late I can try to set the game up on a screen somewhere.

That's what I thought, with the game going on caltrain will be packed. I still need to figure out what I'm up to this weekend but if I can't go then definitely next month!

Pretty cool it's at the github hq though. I learning how to program right now so I occasionally use github.

I just realized that this will be the same date as the WI meetup.  :)  Would you guys be interested in trying to do some sort of joint portion to the events?  I have no idea what that might consist of, but I thought I'd put the idea out there since we'll have two groups of at least 6 geekhackers together.   :thumb:

Hoffman, I'm not sure if we'll have AV or not, but depending on the group size we might all be able to cram into a conference room and do a hangout or something. Would you be free around 11 or 12 Pacific time Saturday to do an AV test?

Ours starts 1pm central (11am pacific), so unfortunately I'd need to do that a little earlier in the day (half an hour earlier, I'd say).  Or I could just step aside during the meetup, that's fine too.   :thumb:

I'm trying to imagine what a hangout would end up being, and I'm having trouble seeing it be anything other than introductions and showing off boards.  Which is fine, but is there something a little more interesting or productive we could do?  Not that meeting people isn't fun, I'd just like to see what else we can do with the time.  :)

Okay so I'm pretty sure I'll be there this weekend.

But about a Skype session or something that would be pretty cool. But yeah we would definitely need to pick something to do on the call otherwise it would be pointless other than just meeting each other.

Hokay. I'll try my darndest to get to SF earlier on Saturday. Perhaps by crashing there Friday night. I am not a stupendous typist but I could see a typing competition being a diverting hangout event.

Now considering that there's going to be a game going on near Github, would it be better to drive there and park, or take public transportation?

Also if anyone has Matias clicky/silent keyboards please bring them so I can try them out and compare! I'll bring my silenced Realforce 87U to show off and maybe sell, as well as my Poker II. I picked up a Model F PC/AT off eBay this week but I don't think it will arrive in time for the event.

I can bring in an F AT. I don't have cool keycaps so I'm just going to bring random keyboards...

Sounds good. I'll just take the caltrain express from the Mountain View stop, arrive at 11:45, grab some lunch and head to Github. Unless Github is providing lunch   :nudge: :nudge:

Lunch isn't "provided" but there will be the option to partake in delivered food (because **** going out on Giants day). Definitely do transit. Parking will be $60 if you can even find it.

Is anyone driving who wouldn’t mind picking me (and a pile of keyboards) up in the Mission? Otherwise I’ll have to catch a taxi.

So the (total of) three ChargePoints in your neck of the woods are likely to be full?  Dang.

I'm bringing a GH36 and a GH36x2.  I can give one human and three cubic feet of keyboards a lift from Mountain View/Palo Alto.

And back, if I can find a car charger during the World Series!  Go Giants!

Got both the Novatouch and 456GT to the office today, as well as the Viper and Eagle kits for jwaz and cgbuen! I am going home this evening but I don't think I need to bring anything else.

I'm in Santa Clara and don't have a car or anything (no parking in SF anyways). I was planning on walking to the Caltrain station and taking that up to the San Francisco stop.

How far is Github from the stop? Can I walk or will I need to get on a bus or uber? I suppose I could always check out Google maps.

Edit: looks like its a little over half a mile (a couple of blocks), so walking should be doable.

What train do you plan on taking? I'm still split on Bart or Caltrain.

The walk is effortless. My advice due to Giants is to walk north on fourth until you get to Brannan then hang right and just take Brannan all the way to the first right past 2nd. Walk down that street and look for the Octocat silhouette. Walk through that door.  :D

If I plan on taking BART, should I just stop at Montgomery and walk down on 2nd to get to Brennan?

Also, I plan to bring my Dauphin since it's pretty much my only board with cool keycaps.  I also might bring my FC660C with JP 10th anniversary RF keycaps.

Yup Montgomery is the closest station and its like a 15 minute walk just down the street.

Pretty sweet board by the way!

Yeah, definitely. It's not as leisurely as the walk from caltrain but very doable.

XT is physically compatible with AT right? If I reflash my Soarer with a AT -> PS/2 to do XT layout everything will work?

If someone is bringing a kishsaver, maybe I’ll leave the 107-key at home. It’s damn heavy. (But since the theme is keycaps, I wanted to have an example of the curved-backplate + uniform keycaps type of board, for comparison with uniform flat, uniform stepped, and sculptured keycap types.)

nuclearsandwich: I was going to bring an XT Zenith keyboard with green alps and a buzzer, which is why I wanted the XT–>USB converter, but actually I think I’m going to bring a different green Alps board instead, since it’s a bit more unusual (in which case there’s no need for the converter). Or maybe I should just bring both.

I'll have the converter on hand for whichever you decide. I vote for rarer if you have to pick one of the two. I need to put some of my green Alps in something more compact than a ZKB-2R.

I'm stoked that it's raining but as heliosphere said, protect your keyboards during commute!

Is there gonna be any thick WYSE there? It's kind of a shame when you look at what SP used to be capable of producing. They're sets would actually be worth what they cost at low tiers if they pumped that much plastic into them. I'll bring a set just in case.

Bring the busted one and we'll open it here! That is, if anyone has a soldapullt and flux for rework. Our equipment is pretty barren at the moment.

On one of my 2Rs, it's not the solder joint but some switches themselves that appear to've given out.

So I think there were thirteen of us who made it here today. Which if I recall correctly is one of the best attendance numbers in the recent months. Had a blast hosting on behalf of GitHub and you can definitely consider us part of the regular rotation.

Thanks everyone who came, and even everyone who said hi, but wasn't able to make it. If you had any problems with our facilities or staff today, please feel free to let me know via PM or email ( which you can see at https://github.com/nuclearsandwich ). If on the off chance you had a problem with *me* and you don't feel comfortable notifying me directly, jwaz and HaaTa have the email address of one of my coworkers.

The sponsored pizza was a last minute surprise. If we do food next time, we'll do something different.

Also a huge shoutout to HoffmanMyster and the Wisconsin meetup we got to hangout with briefly. It was disastrous and fun.

I said it in the WI thread, but I'll say it again here. Thanks for humouring me and letting us chat briefly with you guys. It may have been super awkward and a minor failure, but damnit I had fun!  :))

And it's always great to see you guys, I love you all and hope you had a fun time despite your inclement weather!  :-*

Big props to nuclearsandwich, as he was a wonderful host.  The showcase of keyboards, the quick introduction with the Midwest meetup, and the tour of GitHub made today so much fun.  I saw a lot of new faces today, and I hope to see the same and more new faces during future meetups.

Until next time guys,

People who came, we haven't done it in the past, and I'm making the most work for hacoboloose but if you could post a list of the keyboards you brought. I think it'd be really neat to keep track of that. Here's mine:

- 456GT - By request and Super smooth (maybe 62g, maybe just super well lubricated) MX blacks with a fancy housing.
- Duck Viper - Soware set
- Novatouch - Commando SA set and various other thin PBT, DCS, DSA, and POM keycaps.
- GON Skinny - It's my old daily driver at work
- Matias Quiet Pro fullsize
- Tex Yoda - Kinda brought it, kinda broke it

Hmm, let’s see...
- Epson HX-20 (Cherry M8)
- NEC PC-8201 (Alps SKFL)
- disembodied keyboard from Atari 600XL (Alps SKFL)
- disembodied keyboard from Apple //c model A2S4100 (amber alps)
- disembodied keyboard from Macintosh Portable (salmon alps)
- disembodied keyboard from IBM PC Convertible 5140 (brown alps)
- disembodied keyboard from some Canon AP-series typewriter (alps integrated dome and awesome keycaps)
- disembodied cherry ML-based laptop keyboard
- keyboard from luggable NEC PowerMate Portable (blue alps)
- Magitronic branded FK-2001 (white Alps)
- two Minicoms (one with vintage MX black, another with linear MX clones)
- “Keyboard and Personality Module” in DEC terminal layout (green Alps)
- 101-key ANSI-layout Televideo terminal keyboard (white space invaders)
- Some kind of video editing keyboard I got from mkawa (black space invaders)
- Some terrible linear-ish Futaba board with sorta interesting doubleshot caps
- IBM 4704 Model F, 107-key
- Some Chicony board with a trackball (blue SMKs)
- keyboard from IBM P70 (Alps plate spring) with the keycaps swapped out for ones from a Wang board, and a baggie of the original caps
- a baggie of caps from a Sony video editing keyboard
- two prototype “ergonomic” keyboards (one clicky Matias, one MX blue), and half an ergodox (spring-swapped MX clear) for comparison

I think that was all of it, but I might be forgetting one or two. Since the theme was “keycaps”, I tried to bring things that mostly had different sorts of keycaps (different top shapes, different profiles, different materials, different printing methods).

The Enter key and P not working were probably my fault. The day before shipping it I upgraded the controller firmware to get media keys and layers (number row = F1-F12 and embedded tenkey) working. I'm sure i didn't test it enough, but was short on time. I spent no time trying to make it look pretty; it needed a good cleaning and a coat or two of paint.

Those who had a chance to type on it, how did it feel? Any suggestions for improving it?

Man after seeing jacobulous and haata's lists I feel bad for only bringing a stock hhkb and a poker 2. Hopefully I'll be able to bring in a GON hhkb next time!

So like, it's totally not about what you bring. It's about coming and spending time and learning stuff. Bring what you'll enjoy sharing but don't think about it more than that! <3

Lost and Found

There's a 6footish Amazon USB - USB Mini cable that was left at GitHub HQ. If it's yours let me know and I can either bring it to next month or you can come hang out at GitHub sometime and pick it up.

Definitely. I learned a lot from Haata and from Jacobulous's rant/lecture. He should really try publishing a paper after he does some research haha. Thanks nucsandwich though for being such a great host!

I almost always bring 0–3 things (because I usually travel by public transit / bike / foot). Yesterday was an exception because HaaTa was traveling light, and because I wanted people to see a bunch of examples of different types of keycaps.

How thoughtful of you!
