Title: Need opinions on which switch to get for second keyboard
Post by: AverageHybrid on Fri, 26 September 2014, 08:52:18
So this has probably been my third time posting asking for help on this forum but yea I do need you guys' opinions as to which switch to decide on since this forum has helped me in deciding my first keyboard which is currently a Filco Cherry MX Blue switch and I really like it.

Since I changed into a mechanical from my old crap rubber dome, I've been really statisfied with this keyboard. However, I feel like blues do not cut it for every tasks I need to perform in front my of computer. Sure the blues are good for typing and any kind of other casual stuff. The blue is a good keyboard for serious work and stuff like typing on forums and typing in chats. The thing now is that I need a second keyboard that is for my intensive gaming and rhythm games which require rapid taps. I still cannot decide between the other three switches: Blue, Browns or Blacks. I have already went to the shop to try all three of them but I still cannot decide as they all feel good to me. Browns do not feel exactly "gritty" as some people have described them as and is only slightly less tactile than my blues personally. Reds and Blacks do not have much of a difference to me and I don't mind the extra actuation force of the blacks.
So after all these it's all down to tactile silent or linear switches which I really cannot decide on. I guess I'm currently leaning towards the Reds as they are lighter than the blues and are linear. Each switche just feels unique and I cannot make up my mind.
Need you guys' opinion on which switch I should get for my second keyboard.

I think you answered your own question. Go with reds.

You say your gaming is "intensive", so reds will probably be better for long periods than blacks.

By intensive I meant more like accuracy and precision rather than endurance as I do not usually get tired from my Blues unless I continuously mash them for a straight 15-20 minutes.

Linear mx is my go-to for gaming.

More important though is the KRO support and the layout.

75% are my favorite gaming boards (Choc Mini, Keycool84)

MX Clear with a spring swap are great for all purpose.

Get a KUL!

If you're doing typing and gaming, my personal favorite all around switch is reds. Clears are pretty good too.

If you're doing "intesive" gaming, like you said, I'd go with reds or blacks. I prefer blacks, since they're heavier and they'll get smoother with time (reds will to but not to the same degree).

if you can learn to "float" the reds and not bottomout, they can be great for typing. I usually bottom out when gaming no matter the switch.

Ergo Clears! Here's what I suggest you to do: Get a Poker 2. Buy clear switches and light springs from berserkfan, I'll mod it for you for a real cheap price, tada! Ergo Clear Poker 2!

If you're happy with your "typing" keyboard, then get one with Reds for gaming. In my experience it's hard to judge switches properly in a store. The Reds are closer to Blues in terms of spring strength and you're happy with those it seems, so you should easily be able to switch between boards without any adjustment time.

For a general purpose board, ErgoClears are awesome (62g are my favourite, just a hair stronger than Blues) and frosty has given you a great offer. I find the tactile bump helps me when gaming with them actually (and of course they're great for typing too). You can "rest" the keys on the upstroke against the bottom of the bump and it's right at the actuation point, so a little less pressure releases the contact and a little more makes it. Takes some practice, but it works well if you get used to it. Great for fast-paced FPS if you can keep calm enough not to mash the keys.

Browns are okay, but I found the tactility not that satisfying for typing and I can't "hover" them like I can Reds or ErgoClears.

So, I recommend Reds or Clears, depending on your own preferences and which you'd think would suit your style of gaming more.
