Title: Which Filco tenkeyless?
Post by: phototristan on Sun, 21 June 2009, 08:34:05
Anyone know which Filco tenkeyless keyboard has the best clicky feel and sound similar to a Model M?

Thanks. How come they don't make a 104 key one with blue Cherry switches? Or do they?

I think you would find the Zero most like an IBM. It uses white Alps which are louder than the Blues.
Blue switches do not feel or sound at all like a model M. They are far too soft and the sound is too small and high pitched.
The Alps will be closest for sure.

Oh yea, forgot there is a white alps version.  Was having too much fun typing that on my new toy.

+1 lam's suggestion.

There are at least two. Bigpook ended up swapping out the white XMs for real blacks from a Dell. Another guy swapped them out with blues as far as I remember.

I think that was billm that swapped them out for the blue alps. I am still using the filco with black alps. I feel like some kind of heretic for saying this, but the black alps are fricking sweet.

I can't because Metadot ended up replacing it under warranty for me and I sold the new one.

Phototristan, check here for 104 key info. (http://geekhack.org/showwiki.php?t=6300)

Also, can you take a photo sometime of your Das with the faded lettering and post it in that thread?  It's a common complaint but I've never seen a picture and since you're a photographer....

I, too, believe that Cherry MX Blue are completely different from the Model M. They offer a good tactile feeling and sound, but they are much much lighter than the Buckling spring, and way quieter (in my opinion).

I guess nothing really beats buckling springs! The Unicomps or Model Ms are durable too. Those keyscaps don't wear down nor start looking shiny like both the Das and Filcos.

I also think leavy sound and feeling is very different from BS. Closest would be the simplified Alps.

Happy Fathers Day everyone!

You should really try out a PC/AT Model F, not a Filco tenkeyless, but it has a nicer feel and sound than a Model M (IMHO)

Come to the dark side, we have capacitive switches!
