Title: Text-Based Shooter
Post by: notsonerd on Thu, 02 October 2014, 07:47:36
Preview of What Could Have Been (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xOLa1E0VCAI)

Wish I'd known about geekhack.org when this game was recently greenlit on Steam.

It became immensely popular upon its release for about a month, then died all of a sudden. If you look online, there was a lot of hype about it two years ago. It's all I played for that entire month.

The prototype (http://eigen.pri.ee/shooter/) that gained short-lived popularity is still playable. Just create a login and password at the startup screen.

It would be really great if this game got some attention. The concept is simple, but the gameplay is awesome.

Instead of hitting the "R" key to reload like you might in FPS games, you literally have to type the word "reload." To fire your weapon, you can't just click your left-mouse button and be done with it. No, you have to type "fire." Even to navigate the map, you have to type "go (north, south, east, or west)," and to face a certain direction you must type "face (north, south, east, west). There's even a chat feature in-game.

If anyone is interested in playing this game, post a reply on this thread. I'd love to be able to play this game again with people.

There's also a spin off of the House of the Dead called Typing of the Dead which is a shooter based on typing.

I got that on sale for Steam. ToD isn't multi-player, though. TBS is online.

Wow is all I have to say, I had not seen this before. Don't know whether to laugh or to simply be happy it died.

Actually, they are. The original as well as Overkill are both multiplayer. I've played through the original with my brother many times =D

Is it actually any good? Or just a giant meh?

If you're asking about Typing of the Dead, it's awesome. They're both incredibly entertaining for different reasons. The first has the worst voice acting in history and it only makes every moment of the game better. ToD:Overkill is a curse-soaked grindhouse film-style game with turbo-cheesy acting and just... just silliness and f-bombs. Love 'em both.

Wouldn't keyboards with macro support dominate this game?

This game was probably the most fun web-based game I've ever played. I assume it died quickly because it just became too difficult to play with new updates (medkits, searching bodies, etc.), but I was totally fine with it.

@sobe: The gameplay is very intense. Definitely not a joke in my opinion.

@FoxWolf1: The game requires quite a bit of strategy, so even if you were to use macros, you'd still have to be pretty quick and skilled. I managed to stay at the top of the leaderboard without them.

If anyone happens to be curious about it before I got to work in the next five hours, I'm open to getting online and showing you the ropes.

I'm guessing you played the game in its earliest alpha stage? That's about the time it gained popularity.

Yeah, the game received just a couple of updates and it upped the difficulty a lot for players, single-handedly driving away the playerbase. I admit that it was a lot more fun when all you had to do was shoot, reload, and loot bullets.
