Hello,
Just doing some research and would like to hear some experiences from you guys before I decide to mod my switches.
I'm planning to do a custom board, and wonder what would the difference be between red and clear switches with 62g springs in them.
So far I'm a big MX red fan as you can tell by my signature, so perhaps I might be happy with them lubed up and modded, then again ergoclears are pretty well regarded by the community.
I like the idea of a stiffer red, and honestly have no idea how a light tactile ergoclear would feel for gaming since I'm used to linear.
How do they compare?

The main difference between the two switches, as you have already noted, is in the tactile feedback the clears have over the linear reds. The springs are really just a preference as you can have 62g or 65g for ergo clears. If you want a stiffer red, maybe you could go with black? They're both linear and black is just stiffer so it might save you mod time if you care about that side of things. Tactile IMO is in the middle ground between typing and gaming. If you play a lot of fps the reds/blacks might be better since some people say its easier to doubletap without tactile feedback (e.g. double tapping q in CS) alternatively, you could go crazy with your switch types and have certain colours for certain keys. I have red switches on my z,x and q for games like OSU and CS with the rest being browns. This doesn't affect me too much since I hardly use those keys when typing anyways, so in the end it really depends on what YOU want to do ;D hope that helps haha

62g Reds will feel like.... Reds - with a slightly stronger spring.
62g ErgoClears are a completely different beast. They are the most tactile MX switch I have yet tried and also my favourite. The bump is large and effective. You can use it as a reference for where the actuation takes place, you can "rest" the switch on the bump on the upstroke to keep it ready to actuate again by just pressing a tiny bit harder. Useful for "twitch" games like fast-paced FPS. They also feel great for typing :)

I recorded some of my thoughts on this mod here (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=44749.0) if you're interested in reading.

cool. so 62g reds are still lighter than original blacks? "korean springs"?

How do they compare to Ergoclears with regular spring from MX Brown?

^Wiki covers this, apparently just a larger tactile bump with the clears

Cherry MX Red 45 cN = 45.887229584 g
Cherry MX Black 60 cN = 61.182972779 g
Cherry MX Linear Grey 80 cN = 81.577297038 g
So umm your making MX Blacks I think.
Unless I am misunderstanding something or just suck at math. The odds of this are good.
Edit: I learned something. ⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩⇩

To make it clear, there are two ways of calculating forces, accentuation force (Cherry) or bottoming out force (Korean).
So for example Cherry says reds are 45g, but the bottoming out force for them are 55-60g in reality.
So Korean springs with 62g would only be a tad heavier than stock cherry red springs, and way lighter than blacks.
Hope that clears things up, been reading a lot on it.

Put the clear springs in the red switches. Then put either the red springs or the 62g springs in the clear switches.

Red springs are really light and i've heard that sometimes the clears have trouble coming back up

62g reds don't see too much of a difference from stock reds. A little lighter, yeah, but not much.

If you lubricate the sliders, they’re fine. If you don’t lubricate the sliders, they’re still mostly fine; if the occasional sticking might bother you, then either use slightly stiffer springs or add some lubricant.
Or just give up on mediocre tactile MX switches, and get some nice Alps switches instead.

I used the wiki search box and couldn't find it, can you post the link here? Just to be clear, I want to find out from anyone who have both experience using ergoclear with 62g spring and regular mx brown springs.

Sure, it's in here: http://deskthority.net/wiki/Cherry_MX_Ergo_Clear
"Somewhat like the Brown switch, but with a bigger, longer tactile bump."

The tactile feedback is definitely more noticeable. If you look at the switch mechanisms you will see that there is a bigger bump. I've been using clears for a bit and they're a bit stiffer than browns which i like for typing as i don't bottom out as much. They're also good for gaming :))

Nice writeup, I noticed that you didn't like lighter switches like Reds to begin with, but if you were to pick between stock MX Red and 62g lubed Reds, would you say the 62g Reds are an improvement to you?

I see, I have ergo clears with mx brown as my daily driver, that is why I'm curious if using 62g springs will have better tactile

I'm hoping that alps GON 60% IC goes through ;)

wha- lighter than stock reds? How Can This Be ! ! ? !

62g reds = worn in vintage blacks but with a gritty stem (that is if you have not lubed the 62g reds)
62g clears = omg omg omg omg omg omg
light but springy. The tactile sensation is really gooooood.

One more question regarding this then; what about getting 67g or 68g springs for Clears, because eventually the springs will wear down and lose about ~5g?
-
Would you say the 62g Reds are an improvement to you?
No. I find 62g too light. I have 65g blacks in my Epsilon. The red and black stems are the same.

You'll be bored of the hobby way before you wear your Springs enough to lose 5g of actuation force.
-
I am slightly confused. TacticalStache says 62g reds (korea springs?) are lighter than stock reds, but you ^ CPTBadAss say in your nice post that they're heavier than stock reds.
HOPING that the gold springs in the GB section would be slightly heavier than Reds but lighter than Blacks.
I think your post seems more well-written-out and whatnot but I suppose it can depend greatly on what springs used too... :p
-
In the red, it would just feel like blacks...
the clear springs are more than 62

Vintage blacks do not need to be worn in to feel like they do. Even unused ones feel the same way.

His “worn in” was clearly with reference to the 62g part; as in, 62g springs are like heavily used MX black springs; not sure that’s especially accurate though.
-
ya with the 62g part.
