Title: The Second Official Geekhack Typing Speed Leaderboard
Post by: notsonerd on Sat, 04 October 2014, 05:54:10
Take Your (Different) Test Here (http://www.keyhero.com/free-typing-test/)

So I checked out "typing test" using an advanced search and found that they're not very popular among the forum users here. The first leaderboard (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=19891.msg380039#msg380039) was last active two years ago, so I thought I'd reboot it.

The Rules

-Customize your test so that you type in your preferred language.
-You must provide a screenshot of your test result, the title of the document as well as the test itself.
-You must provide the keyboard you used, and the switches you typed with.
-If you chose to type in a language other than English, please provide that information as well.
-Failure to meet all of these requirements will result in the removal of your score from the leaderboard (refer to the sample below).

Optional

-You may list other filters you used such as touch-typing, two-finger style, keycaps (ABS, PBT, etc.) or another key layout like Dvorak.

I recommend using Snipping Tool (http://www.capture-screenshot.org/snipping-tool/) for a quick and easy screenshot. It already comes with Windows Vista, 7 and 8, but you can download it here (http://www.capture-screenshot.org/snipping-tool/).

I will list the ranks in this post and do my best to keep it up-to-date.

I've always used that test to measure my typing speed until I discovered the one I linked above. It being just random words doesn't make it the most accurate measure of typing.

Was linkbane's speed up in the 150's or so?

I type around 20 - 30 WPM. I'm pretty awesome, I think.

And most of my words are really complex, so take that for what it's worth. For example, I usually type this word 10 to 20 times a day: antidisestablishmentarianism

Or: Buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo buffalo buffalo Buffalo buffalo.

10fastfingers says 70 WPM, which isn't really reflective of how fast I type when I'm not copying something

Yeah, I haven't ever got the appeal of typing what you see on the screen. It's in no way truly representative of how fast one can type.

Have you been using the Colemak layout to type for a while? The WPM you achieved using it is about as fast as I'd go with the Dvorak layout after having not used it for like two years after I learned it.

Either way, awesome to see someone using a layout other than QWERTY and Dvorak. This is also my first time seeing someone type on an Ergodox. Very curious about it now.

Have you been using the Colemak layout to type for a while?

I've been using Colemak for 18 months now. I've lost my QWERTY skills and need to look at the keyboard to type in qwerty.

There is one catch: I'm dyslectic.

I don't think typing test.com is a good benchmark..

people could cheat and practice...   which wouldn't be representative of their their off-hand transcription speed..

I think we need something with a randomized medium sized word bank

You make a good point. The only website that randomizes documents (not words) is Type Racer. Think that'd be good to use?

Edit:

@Premonition: I need to know your switch-type, otherwise I'll have to remove the score from the leaderboard.
@genkidama: I need to know your keyboard, otherwise ^

At tp4issue's keen suggestion, I've changed the test standard as well as the rules. The previous leaderboard will eventually be replaced with scores from the new test.

Please follow the new format, and happy typing.

I also would love to have such a speed, but I guess my habits die hard as I never learned the 10 finger system and kind taught myself by playing.

Now I tried this on my mech and I think that you can "cheat" here quite easily if the text is very short and you are lucky when there are not so difficult words in it. I got 112 with a short text and 105 with a much longer one. Seems to me we need a different site? Maybe a site where you really need to type for a full minute so that it is more representative rather than just typing a short text?

I've noticed the texts are a little short. I'm still looking for a random text that's consistent. I like how the current test shows stats and errors, though. It looks like I might keep the leaderboards and previous tests up for people to refer to and maybe change them up every few days or weeks depending on how the results go.

Damn, Sifo. Now I'm curious to see how Premonition does on this test.

I also need to figure out another way to make these tables. It's too damn tedious having to retype ranks every time someone joins the leaderboard.

Haha. Yes, I second this. We'd need a solid way to prove that each participant is wasted during the test, though. That could prove problematic.

I don't mind adding a separate leaderboard on here specific to a "drunk" filter. Same rules apply, of course.

Can we have a drunk leaderboard?  I'm curious how we all stack up against each other when inebriated.   :))

oooo ok... I'm down with this..

OK.. let's use 10 fast fingers, because that's standardized and easy to access for everyone..

We have to consult the body weight to Number of drinks chart..

So that we're equivalently inebriated..

Consult this chart..   Everyone drink to the 0.1 level, basically the SECOND orange box in your weight column..

THEN wait exactly 15 minutes.. and take the test...

For HARD difficulty, we can maybe drink to the 4th orange box.. but this isn't recommended for novices... because there's a slight chance of passing out..

for ULTRA mode, we can drink to the 5th or 6th box... OBVIOUSLY this is for experienced drinkers only.. as it MIGHT kill you...

So only attempt ULTRA mode when ur with a friend that can call the ambulance..

I've tried to this "new" test site.

[attachimg=1]

This was done with the following setup:

As you can see, it is not the keyboard or switches that makes typist, but raw skill and perseverance in training.
Even a dyslectic like me can learn to (somehow) touchtype, and results are much better then handwriting :-)

I don't recall ever changing the test to Type Racer. It's only been changed once, and that's to the test that's currently up =p

And "official" is only in the title of the thread. The test hasn't been stated official. The word "official" actually hadn't been stated 'til you mentioned it xD

There's a chance another test and another leaderboard will be made should I stumble upon something better. If you want to be on the current leaderboard, though, you do have to follow the format and you do have to take the same test as everybody else.

As he said, I love building boards and hence why all my boards are made by me, I like clicky switches and harvesting Cherry MX switches from TVS-e gold boards (I was in India before coming to Johannesburg) and getting springs from OriginativeCo is the cheapest (Granted a little tedious) option for me.

Tried typing with PBT keycaps for the first time. They're really different from ABS and I kinda like 'em. The spacebar feels and sounds especially different.

My accuracy suuucks.
