Hi guys, whatup!
I started my addiction 2 years ago, by importing the WASD v1 keyboard. it wasn't cheap and i had to pay extra taxes :( but when i typed my first sentence on it I Knew i wouldn't go back. (for those interested i use Cherry mx blues with red o-rings)
At the moment i'm saving up some money hoping i'll have enough for when the next ergodox sale starts, after all I'm just a poor Computer Science student ;) But I'm still a bit scared to buy a ergodox kit and then screw up the assembly ^-^.
While researching the ergodox I've been lurking around GeekHack quite a lot, and when i saw this other thread about a solarized keycap groupbuy (http://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=49634.330) I've been missing out on i got real sad :(
So I decided to register and no longer hold out on my addiction and go full throttle !!
Being broke all the time.. HERE I COME!

Haha, welcome! There are certainly some vocal Ergodox fans around here *cough*tp4*cough*.

Welcome to the community. Glad you decided to stop being a lurker. Were you interested in any other boards other than the dox?
And don't feel sad about missing the solarized GB. You can always check the classifieds or make a WTB thread after you meet the requirements. :thumb:

Welkom! ;)
Just keep your eyes open for any new keysets and you will be fine. SA and DSA profile sets will be the easiest ones to fit to an Ergodox.

Welcome to Geekhack!
Some countries do tax you heavily for importing "luxury goods".
At least you have the satisfaction of a great keyboard that should last you for many years :)

Definitely, especially because i'm still somewhat hesitant as to assembling and soldering because i have no experience with both. and ruining a ergodox PBT is something i wouldnt forgive myself for :P
I'm also considering buying a Vortex KBC Poker 2, the non backlit version which has Thick PBT keycaps  I would probably go for cherry mx browns on that one because i don't want to annoy my coworkers (which happens sometimes with my blues :P )
Also I would love to try-out the HHKB but it's so damn expensive and i'm not sure if I like topre switches :O

Ahhh, all good choices. I started with a poker, too. Fun little board to play around with and you can't really go wrong with it. Good way to dip your toe in the 60% form factor.
I hear you about topre. I finally relented and I'm getting one but I've never really spent an extended amount of time typing on it so we'll see how much I like it when it gets here. Don't forget you can always resell whatever you may not like in the classified section. Stuff moves at a reasonable pace.

@sent good to know, although it's still a risk to buy stuff blindly. It's too bad that especially in my country there aren't a lot of places where you can try out good mechanical boards. the only ones you'll find are those steelseries and razer blackwidow keyboards.
I have the same problems with my other addiction: expensive earbuds, nowhere can i just "test" the difference between say the Shure SE 315 IEM and the 530

Yeah, I feel you. I was really hesitant at first when I got here because I had no experience with any of this and the money added up quickly. I definitely spent more money than I needed to. Still, at the end of the day, I have a very clear idea now of exactly what I like and what I don't like, so...worth it? I guess? It's a hobby. It's fun. It's just definitely not a cheap hobby like some may think. I'm not sure if we have any members around your way but that may be another option. They may be willing to ship/sell/rent/loan you a board or two to test. People here are generally friendly as long as you're not an ass.

Welcome to GeekHack, where keyboards are born and made and wallets are raped and torn through.
You're gonna love it here.
