what are people recommending for top 40 music IEMs nowadays?
i only have a few points:
-needs to work with comply foam tips
-shouldn't require an amp and should work off a nexus 4
-not into custom IEMs (fit to your ear canal)
-don't worry about money
-i listen to a lot of Lights' music (so good synth performance is important)
-not willing to buy used, so I need to be able to buy it and get it to Canada without a proxy
please don't recommend me to get better taste in music :p

What kind of budget are we working with here?

lets go with $1000. i DEFINITELY do not need something that uses custom tips (where you have to send them a mold of your ear canal) and i don't want equipment so nice that i need to invest in amps and dacs, so i imagine my tier is quite below $1000. i'm just unaware of quality/price tiers for audio equipment.

Too bad you won't buy used because I'm in Canada and I'll be putting up my JH Roxanne's shortly (paid $1300usd + shipping and taxes) for under $1000. (So that I can get myself customs!)
Consider the shure SE846 (if you have small ears or oddly shaped ears this is a bad choice because of how they fit)

Hmmm, so the MMX100s I saw were in a store in the airport I fly out of. Apparently the replacement is MMX 102 (http://north-america.beyerdynamic.com/store/#!mmx-102-ie-black-silver). I'm not sure if the sound is the same.
I'm very stuck on my JH5s so I haven't done too much research into IEMs lately.

I couldn't find the MMX100, but I did end up buying a pair of Beyerdynamics - the DX160IE. Those are very nice, indeed.
I have two pairs of Shure IEM that I use, the EC2, and a the newer SE215. Both are exceptional. I use the Shure Foam sleeves with them that give a custom feel without the custom price tag. The only thing is you have to replace the sleeves some frequency, so you need to get spares. For over the ear IEMs that you can wear all day, these are fantastic.
I'm no audiophile, but I like my music to sound good. For how I wear my IEM, Shure is my go to. I got the Beyerdynamics for someone else who does not care for the over the ear style of the Shure's.

what do people think of the ie60? maybe ie80?
seems like no audiophiles actually listen to mainstream...so it's hard to get a straight answer -_-

If you're spending $500 and above, buy CIEMs that match the price you want to pay. Full stop. Caveats include finding used JH Roxanne universal fits for sub-1000 that are already in canada and maybe the universal Noble Audio gear (I haven't heard it, only know one person with noble and they have the CIEM top tier.
If you aren't, I prefer the re-400/re-600 from hifiman for top 40 stuff.

from what i understand (not very much), the etymotics are meant to be reference/flat earphones, whereasretty much every other consumer iem is bass biased.
are you saying that mainstream music is better flat than bassy? anyone else have thoughts?
thanks for everyone's tips. so much money for boards, cameras, and music. so much for christmas -_-.
EDIT:
i forgot to say this, but i REALLY hate wrapping the cord around the ear. is this just recommended or will the earpiece physically not fit otherwise? does it matter if you're just sitting down?

I am saying that music is intended to sound the way the artist mixed it in the studio and if you think you are better than that guy then an eq is a better solution than randomly adding noise to your speakers.

I have a pair of these and I can say.... they are awesome! But I believe they are mmx101 with an in line :)
