I think all my stuff is about 700 Gb total, so I back it up on two identical 1.5 TB and I got a 2 TB more recently so I could keep one backup drive spun down and the other offsite.

So I'm probably good for the next year or so. Right now I'm more worried about getting SSDs for all the computers I actually use.

My total space is at just over 6TB and have 2.6TB free. Somehow I still feel cramped.

One day I know I'm going to lose a significant chunk of data and be pretty angry/sad.

I've got 8.4 out of 12TB used, and I'm feeling the crunch.
I may have a problem.

It all depends on how much video&games you have on there, followed by music followed (usually) by pictures. Documents don't really take up any room.

would probably be cheaper to pay for a crunchyroll subscription than moar hard drives.

YOU CAN GET WINDOWS 98 TO FREE UP HARD DISK SPACE. WINDOWS 98 USES LESS SPACE THAN WINDOWS 7, MAC OS X, WINDOWS 8, AND WINDOWS VISTA. THE TIME TO GET WINDOWS 98 IS NOW!

It was a good guess okay.

I have a copy of W98 and a valid license code, but it will not activate. I only install legal software. What do you propose?

I really want to run W98 so I can run my keyboard software, some vintage games and the like.

In any case linux with the -toram cheatcode takes up less hard drive space, but that's less useful to me because it won't run my keyboard software or vintage games.

I don't understand.  My biggest chunks are music and photos, and those do not total over 50 gb.  And I have thousands of photos and over 10,000 songs.  it would literally take months to consume all that music and look at all my photos.  I don't store video media or video games on my computer, because i don't like to sit and watch things, so maybe that is my reason.

That may have been true 5-10 years ago..  but there's so much bandwidth now, there's no need to keep a stash..

The only things that's worth holding onto are bluray isos.

1 bluray movie, is ~30gb.... with special features ~35-45gb...  even remuxed ~17-25gb

I'm always running out of storage.  I have four externals of various sizes hooked up, plus two 2TB internal drives.

Between movies, TV shows, music, and photos I've got quite a lot of stuff stashed.  I'm somewhat of a media hoarder.   :-X

Then you're not trying hard enough. You know, there are poor people who would die just to use the glorious Windows 98! You need to try a little harder.

Please stay away from hoarding physical objects, if you can (except keyboards).  There is no benefit.  Even if will have everything you ever need, it will take you hours to find what you need in the piles of stuff.

I say this as somebody that has lived with a hoarder.  We may not realize it, but an excess of possessions does not equal wealth, and it may not give us comfort, and it may become an emotional burden to have so many things to which we are irrationally attached.

Didn't mean to get so serious, but that is what came to mind when I read this.

I've been surviving since 2008 with a 160GB Samsung hard drive.

I usually never have more than 3GB free because of the many games I play.

EDIT: It has been doing random bizarre noises occasionally, over the last couple of years. The noises began on 2012, if I'm not mistaken. He just did it again after I wrote this reply.

If your movies are arranged alphabetically (or by genre and alphabetically, if the collection is especially large), you should have no problem finding one you're looking for. Same goes for music and books.

Just because someone has a collection of media does not mean that it's unorganized.

I guess that I'm talking like so much stuff you can't even walk through a room.

I'm an organization nerd as well, so I know where you are coming from.

The longer I go, the harder it is for me to start organizing my digital media.
Even my music collection (a measly 2TB) is big enough to give me a case of the ****-its.

TLC should do a program about digital hoarders.

In that case, I totally agree with you. If you look at my pictures in the console setup thread, you can get a pretty good idea of the sort of collections I have.  :thumb:

And my previous post in here was of course referring to non-physical media, which is really obnoxious and hard to sort through because there's so much. I'm working on trimming it down. And part of the reason I prefer physical media is because it's actually less stressful. I can select something to watch, play, or listen to very easily when I have a finite selection with covers and artwork. I like that a lot.  :)

Your warning is very valid though, and I hope I never reach that point.

There are some really really bad digi hoarders among the torrent community.... I knew a guy who was approaching petabyte..  he had full redundancy, so the actually data was half that, but he was around ~800tb the last I saw him... 2011ish .. probably more now..

That's impressive.

I'll never be even close to this, since I'm kind of a minimalist. And after my HD failed many times and I lost everything, I don't really care anymore about my digital data. I just keep it in cycles, deleting old stuff.

That's probably why I've been surviving with such a small HD for almost a decade.

Well it's so ridiculously easy, it's hard not to fill your drives.
It's like spending money with a card vs using cash.

I once torrented a movie I owned just because I didn't want to dig it out of my box of DVDs.

My boot ssd is only 40gb / 120  and program ssd is 60/ 256

Everything else is media..  you don't have to scan media.
