Title: My internet speed was upgraded

Fios was installed on my block. This is up from 30 down/5 up. We don't have to pay extra for this.

Meanwhile in Canada, "commercial areas" are forced to use "business internet plans" (which costs more than residential, for the same speeds) and costs $86 before taxes, and is only this:

Only 2 ISPs around here, and they both have a cap of ~5Mb/s upload for their max speeds. I honestly don't know why they do it, but they think 12dn/0.5up is considered "hi-speed".

blacksburg, VA home of Virginia Tech.

My older brother living in an actual remote place (upper peninsula of michigan) was paying a similar amount for 100 MB/s down.

Price was high due to legal monopoly. One reason I try my very best to not support monopolies.

I'm in Orange County California, which is, theoretically, a major metropolitan area.  The fastest we have is 60mbps in my area.

on campus the internet was super super fast something with Virginia tech having money and supporting internet backbone in that area, but off campus the fast you could get was 3mb/s down.

I know everyone hates comcast, but they were the better of the two choices (for those with a choice. Many had to chose between slow overpriced internet and no internet)

My friend in Seattle has a gigabit connection, but only gets 420mbps right now... still better than my unreliable ~20mbps (paid 25mbps).

Too bad there aren't fiber optic options for houses.

Fiber isn't a household standard over here, it is widely used in commercial settings, but we mostly have DSL and Cable (the two big ISPs) for pre-existing residential areas, except new highrises that were built to support fiber connections.

I'm hoping that things will change, and cost-effective fiber will be offered for residential settings, hopefully soon!

I "can" get fiber it will be ~$87,000 to have it run, then ~$800/mo

Hooooooooly ****. I knew about the Google Fiber programme in the US, but I never thought it was that hard to get it all across the CONUS.

A lot of our broadband is still run over POTL, but our fiber network is slowly increasing. Most connections advertised as fiber are only up to the kerb, then it's copper to the house. And even then, the fiber only comes our of a cabinet at the end of the road and a phone line from the cabinet to the ISP.

So it's mostly a sham. Although the speeds are quicker.

TWC's internet tests well with speedtest, but they're still throttling youtube/twitch.

I run a speedtest with same numbers as tactical, but somehow a 480p video in youtube can't load.

I live in the middle of no-ware and no one will let me buy access to their line so I would have to get a new fiber line run from Topeka or Kansas City. That's the cost it's not a short run. My entire county only has one fiber line to it and that's a co-op between the county and Terraworld/Valnet.

But I have had up to 96/96 at times to another test server. I got it baked into the rent, around $10 per month - which also means that the pensioners in my building who don't have any computers subsidise my Internet...  ;D

I don't know why some are whining about their internet speeds check out my speed connection via traditional 60 year old Copper wire buried in the ground, which has the blistering speed of 705 kB/s.

This is here in Perth, Western Australia, the REAL 3rd world standard of communications and you could thank Tony Abbott for that  >:( .

Operation title: Beta Dog

location : Beaver Operation's Central Command Post, Washington State;

overall objective - keep the masses dumbed down;

stage 1 - deplete testosterone levels;

strategy - give them what they want >> High Definition and John Grisham spouting sh*t;

implementation - high speed internet + improved content;

outcome - 99% decrease in violent crime against homo erectus feminam/ S. Korean economy: fubar but the people have kpop;

unexpected outcome - 75% increase in Cougars stalking men.

high level official - "Put GPS surveillance on all Cougars";

low level official - "Yes sir, but how should I do it?";

high level official - "Use your brain ****-fer-brains and don't make me regret hiring you...jackass";

low level official (returns) - "Sir, I used a tranquillizer gun on him - got him the lower back area;

high level official - "Take him to the ****ing hospital for jocks for all I care!";

low level official - "Sir, what will they think if I bring a comatose 220 pound mountain lion into a hospital sir";

high level official - "You sure it's comotose?";

low level official: "Gentle as a bear cub. He'll be out cold a good 6-7 hours thereabouts";

high level official: "tell you what son, bring him on over here; I'm kind of worried these guys are gonna go extinct with all this urbanization ****. Bring him in here and clear out the war table. Not all of it - just Africa. Go get a muzzle and leave him with me. When he comes to we'll get a few of you strong men to transport him over to my place. I'll keep him as a pet! Now I'm gonna take a valium and a take a nap in the next room. After you done muzzled him, leave him on the table and don't come in and disturb my sleep or you'll get worse that what you did to that dang Cougar I assure you. And it won't be no tranquilizer gun either! Lock the door behind you.";

***5 hours later***

high level official: "Darling, have you ever considered getting a Cougar as a pet? I hear they make great guard dogs..."

high level official's wife: "Sure hun, just make sure it's a male one. They make better guard dogs. And I've cancelled my massage with Sven today. Think I'll just relax a bit and watch Animal Planet...hunnn, we don't want to kill the neighbours children do we? So can you kinda find a toothless variety?"

high level official: "God you're just the perfect wife! Now do we need any groceries while I'm out? Maybe some peanut butter? Well, I'll just save a bunch and buy a quart."

high level official's wife: "LoL hun, that's so amazing - did you know male Cougars cum in quarts?" "Anyway, hurry back hunny bunny".
