Title: Pizza Toppings
Post by: Lurch on Thu, 23 October 2014, 13:11:26
I'm a fan of the "quattro formaggi" (four cheese) pizza. Fresh mozzarella, provolone, gorgonzola, and parmesan.

What kind of toppings do you like on your pizza?

Pepperoni 5 lyfe. Also, any type of chicken is pretty good, too.

Heck yeah, pepperoni rules. I like pepperoni on "white pizza" with hot sauce.

A spot by me makes a "chicken ranch" pie - chicken, bacon, onions, ranch dressing, and mozzarella cheese.

Love both!

Pancetta and arugula with arrabbiata sauce and fresh mozzarella, asiago and parmesan. Capacola, salami, peppadew and pfefferoni with fire roasted tomato basil sauce mozzarella and pecorino romano. Then my take on the Hawaiian with smoked ham, fire roasted pineapple, carmelized red onion, sriracha sauce and white cheddar. Sometimes I just go with the basics too like sausage and mushrooms or peperoni, banana peppers and green olives.

just cheese tomato sauce bazil. mozzarella di bufala + parmigiano as cheeses.
san marzano tomatoes. olive oil. stuff. good pizza.

so classic. neapolitan style.

oor being from sweden; we have 'kebab pizza' which is döner kebab meat on pizza with garlic sauce+red sauce and salad. also fantastic. but it's more of a NYC style base.

I like aubergine on pizza. I like properly cooked aubergine most times, but it is really great on pizza.
And yes, pizza should have a thin (but not too thin) crust and be cooked in a wood-burning oven, Italian style.

oor being from sweden; we have 'kebab pizza' which is döner kebab meat on pizza with garlic sauce+red sauce and salad.
Kebab pizza could also be döner kebab meat without cold ingredients, or made with shish kebab.

The most unusual pizza topping I have ever seen must be a "Pizza IFK" (for a sports team) from a restaurant in Gothenburg: Pork tenderloin, banana slices, garam masala (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Garam_masala), faux béarnaise sauce (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/B%C3%A9arnaise_sauce) and ... peanuts.

Edit: Corrected

mozzarella ?

that's the main ingredient..  I've always felt prosciutto was a waste if you heat it up and cook it with other things, cuz they drown out the flavor and/or weaken/muddle it.

haven't had basil on pizza..  will try nx time.

The prosciutto should not be cooked the same time as the pizza, it will become dry and will taste like cardboard. Add it around 5 min onto it just to mix the flavors, samo goes for the basil.

Edit: As for the mozzarella, if you use the shredded kind like most of the people you are doing something wrong  ;)

Agree with everything here. Many toppings are supposed to be put on 2-3 minutes before it's done, or after it comes out of the oven. Burnt arugula, prosciutto, basil, calamari, chanterelles, or whatever is not something anyone wants on their pie. Use your judgment based on the delicacy of the ingredient.

I've had some interesting stuff on pizzas... like in Hungary I had one that was with gulyas beef, salo, fresh paprika and quail eggs. I've had 'German' pizza with bratwurst, sauerkraut and butterkasse on a rye crust. In my town we have a Chinese pizza place where you can get stuff like kung pow chicken, or crab rangoons. Gyros pizza can be pretty good, but it's more or less just a giant gyro so no big deal. Mexican pizzas can be good, and I've had them with many different ways but I think I liked with carnitas and roasted anahiems with mixed Mexican cheeses best. I'm pretty open to different toppings... but sometimes am not too sure about things like asparagus and lobster.
If I'm using delicate ingredients, I will bake the crust alone then assemble the toppings to pop under the broiler for a minute or two, just long enough to heat it up. Fresh herbs like basil are best put on right before serving and not cooked. Though sometimes if I can't be bothered I will put the toppings under the cheese as most of the time it prevents things from drying out or getting overcooked like.

Strangest thing I ever had on a pizza was on a pizza Hawaii, which had, besides the obvious pineapple, maraschino cherries and brown sugar on it. I would like to say that I didn't like it, but the sweetness together with the acidity of the tomato sauce, combined with the molten cheese and saltiness of the ham made a okay combination. Nothing for food snobs probably, but it was a good experience. I even tried to make it myself, but it always was to sweet (good for the munchies though).

Personally I prefer a marinara, margherita, napoletana (anchovies and capers)  or quatro formaggi.

Ham, pepper salami, mushrooms and copious amounts of gorgonzola.

When ordering at a restaurant I will put everything that I like on it. So yes, a +10 topping pizza is great.

The most hilarious one was when I was young and a friend of mine joined us on a day out in Germany. He had never had pizza before so he ordered a pizza and fries.
What he got was a pizza with fries on top. XD

True, but trust me when I say thicker or bigger mushrooms are not any better. They will just slide/shoot off the pizza or give you a steaming hot beard on your face.

I'm a fan of the "quattro formaggi" (four cheese) pizza. Fresh mozzarella, provolone, gorgonzola, and parmesan.

What kind of toppings do you like on your pizza?

It's all about the meatfeasts! The real man's pizza.
