Title: Help! Losing interest in geekhack!
Post by: berserkfan on Wed, 29 October 2014, 00:57:13

My problem seems to stem from having found my favourite layout type. I say layout type, because the layout itself isn’t fixed and will still be tweaked in future. But I no longer want to use Qwerty, and I also no longer want to use a standard 104 key keyboard.

For the past few months I have been trying out split matrix layouts, and while I have not fully gotten accustomed to them yet, I greatly prefer them. They are indeed more comfortable than the tiny keyboards that you guys seem to like so much. Really, I cannot understand why we have so many big Nordic members who will spend $500 and more buying and outfitting their HHKB, when the layout more appropriate to them would be a split keyboard at least 60 cm apart.

And now I no longer want to take part in group buys. Most classifieds no longer interest me. Most discussions and keycap threads are no longer relevant to me since I am using relegendables. Most of my older keyboards are no longer wanted. I’ve spent too much time modding things that I no longer want to use. I am even putting up with black switches on my keyboards, because I don’t feel like desoldering them (too much trouble). So I have clears and jailhouse blues on 104 key keyboards that I don’t want to use, and own several point of sale keyboards that have nothing but blacks on them (which I do want to use).

I think I have turned into a curmudgeon like fohat. Wonder where this is going to go.

Maybe you'll end up like this guy.

The time he has spent on GH and his signature tell a very interesting story about the conclusion to his journey on geekhack.

OMG

Did he ever go through a GON or some ultra expensive Korean customs phase? Because I sure as hell didn't. It'll be really funny if after trying some $1000 keyboard he decided that the free keyboard that came with his PC purchase was better!

There's no reason GH has to be some sort of forever destination, especially if you've found what you want.
Discovery is 99% of the enjoyment this hobby brings.

I've deserted countless forums as my interests waned.

I just bought an Ergodox, and I am already using Ghetto ergodoxes aka POS keyboards. I am not happy at all to be using black switches, but they are really hard to desolder so i'm stuck for now.

Well, you only REALLY lose interest if you lost interest in artisan caps.

There are plenty of us who don't have any interest in artisan caps  :))

For me this is just the place I spend my time now, in a previous life I spent time at a notebook forum that has since went to crap and before that head-fi.

You are probably right but I see artisan caps as what makes GH interesting as compare to say, Deskthority or Reddit. Look at Deskthority, the discussion over there are slower compare to the rate of post changing in GH. It's gotta be the beautiful caps made by many artist here.

So, if I may ask, what do you expect from this thread? You want some convincing to stay? If you've found what you intended to find, and don't want to be here anymore, then by all means move on. I can guarantee you many people have without a word to anyone.

The purpose is a social one, which is why this is fitting for the off topic section. It is to get people to talk, and as far as I can see I have been successful. PBTforever has even contributed a funny picture that you have to look at. I think sooner or later some gher WILL try to rebuild 19th century typewriters into solar powered programmable backlit bluetooth keyboards JUST because he is a geek and likes to do these things.

My other posts in Making Things Together and Classifieds are more serious.

I'm surprised how many people here talk about "end game" keyboard and things like that.

For me personally I just like to see what people make. One of my favorite threads is that guy recreating the data hand but I have zero intention on getting one myself. Is just interesting. And I learn a lot from it.

I have two computers, two keyboards now. And two artisan caps, im done pretty much. Maybe one more pbt set in me lol.

This place should never be about buying or novelty that's unsustainable. But creativity is a flame that can be filled here. And that's why I like this place, I started writing more and oil painting again since I came here. I like being reminded to 'make stuff'

Start tinkering more.  This forum is a black hole if you are willing to take that dive.

Really, I cannot understand why we have so many big Nordic members who will spend $500 and more buying and outfitting their HHKB, when the layout more appropriate to them would be a split keyboard at least 60 cm apart.

Where are the split+matrix keyboards using Topre switches?  The uTron is damn expensive and is not matrix but "reverse staggered" or whatever that is called. That's the thing.  This and I can sell my HHKB Pro 2 or my HHKB Pro JP anytime for a very good price.  The HHKB is one the keyboard that depreciates the less. It's not as if Topre owners are throwing money out of the window: you can always resell at a good price if you want to.

Then I don't agree with the other poster that the ErgoDox is the endgame. My endgame would be something like Jesse Vincent's "Butterfly / Mark 13 / Model 00" keyboard, but with Topre switches (and without the key that apparently needs to be pressed with the palm of the hand). It is similar to the Ergodox but takes into account the fact that the thumb is not a finger that similar to the other fingers. I simply think that the clusters of keys to be hit with the thumbs on an Ergodox aren't that great and that Jesse Vincent with his Butterly / Mark 13 / Model 00 totally saw the light and has a superior design but YMMV.

But I'd still rather type on my HHKB Pro JP than on any single non-Topre keyboard out there, no matter how ergonomic that keyboard is.

I own white ALPS, Cherry MX, buckling springs, etc. boards so it's not as if I had only tried one switch type.

I'm not spending money on fancy keycaps but I'd happily fork $500 or even more for the Butterfly / Mark 13 / Model 00 with Topre switches. Maybe once such a beast exists I'll lose interest in GH... And even then: "offtopic" and "other geeky stuff" are kinda cool subforums  :)

I suspect most people find something far more interesting to obsess about once they find a decent keyboard and pick an effective alternate layout.   After 60% mechanical and colemak the job is 99% done.

I've already started thinking about stereotypes and plover but headphones and turbo chargers will almost certainly drag me away.
