Title: Simple question - IBM Model F AT case
Post by: fohat.digs on Mon, 03 November 2014, 07:56:53
Were ATs ever made with metal case backs?

If so, I have never seen one, but I have heard that they existed. Can anyone verify?

Bump?

44 people have read this but no one has offered any comment.

Let me make it a more direct request:

If you have ever seen or heard of an IBM Model F AT case that was not plastic top and bottom, please respond.

Mine is both plastic.

If there were any made with a metal backplate, the plastic top plate would also have to be completely redesigned. My theory is taht if there were any made the case would be entirely different. (like parak's odd ssk (http://deskthority.net/photos-f62/so-this-thing-t8228.html).)

Mine is plastic too, both parts of it. It really cracks when opening the case, i hated this sound.

If memory serves me right, there were some clones with metal backs - but I've never heard of an actual AT with a metal back. I think if one existed, and I wouldn't put it past IBM at the time to make one, then I doubt that it would have been for the PC AT, but rather the same layout used for something more esoteric.
