Another month, another meetup :D
This time a bit closer to South Bay.
samwisekoi has offered to host at 724support.com :thumb:
Same place that Keycon West 2014 was hosted at this summer.
December 6th 2014 @ 1 PM
Address
724support.com
Stand Sure Systems
1077B Independence Ave
Mountain View, CA 94043
San Antonio is the closest Caltrain station.
jwaz has been asking me for probably a year now about doing a presentation on keyboard protocols (and reverse engineering) so I thought I'd make that the focus of this meetup.
I'll make a small presentation as well as some demos.
I have all the tools necessary, but if anyone has a more portable oscilloscope (mine is an old analog one) that would be amazing.
Some of the tools I'll need to do a proper demo
- Breadboard /w assortment of wires, connectors, and resistors
- Teensy 2/3 (I prefer to do all new code on ARM microcontrollers)
- Logic Analyzer (I'll be bringing a Salae Logic 8 )
- Variable power supply (in case the keyboard has a greater than 5V input voltage)
- Multimeter (with continuity)
- Soldering iron and basic soldering tools if things get interesting
- Oscilloscope for the early reverse engineering
I'll be using a computer with Arch Linux. USB HID debugging is *way* easier with Linux.
Windows has tools available, but setup is annoying.
Mac OSX is basically the worst as you have to buy expensive tools to debug properly (though you can get some things after installing some devtools from Apple).
Haven't decided which protocols I'll demo, but I'll take suggestions (if I have the keyboard, and I can get it working before the meetup).
Please RSVP if you plan to attend.
(GeekHack mod, please sticky this topic and un-sticky the old meetup thread)
-
Haata, can you please make that presentation available on YouTube or another video service? I'd love to see that.
-
Same here, I too would love to see taht
-
I can prolly bring the oscope (rigol ds1102e).
-
I'll be there!
-
If you guys pay for my plane ticket I'll be there! :))
Seriously jealous of the monthly meetups you guys run out there.

The bay area nerd-per-capita is at times a blessing... and at times, a horrible, horrible curse.
-
I can most likely come - my mom and brother can go check out the CHM.
I also have an oscilloscope I can bring - a Tek TDS684B (http://w140.com/tekwiki/wiki/TDS684). It has VGA out for projector or whatnot, I just have one probe so if you have more probes it would probably work better.
Multiple scopes is never a bad thing though.
-
YES. So stoked this. I will (of course) be there!
and I'm sure we can snag some video of the presentation ala samwisekoi's studio gear or whoever brings a camera.
EDIT: Tools I can bring:
Fluke Multimeter
Teensy 2
Buspirate

I plan to do what actually worked at KeyCon West. Video the presentation(s) and then post them on YouTube. None of this streaming stuff that was hard to do, got blocked by some yahoo, and didn't end up with us having archival footage.
So, I will set up a video camera in the conference room, record the presentation(s), and then put it or them up on YouTube. I'll probably rope someone into doing a walk-around with a camera so we can also post a video showing everyone's collections.
See you all then!

I wish I could be there to do CPTBadCAMTM :(.

Sorry, mate. Who we need is Hoffman "the human tripod" Myster! He was great!

We can't be friends anymore :(

Again, sorry. You and I are in the first row, with the tall people behind us. And still HoffmanMyster can video the table in front of us without difficulty. It is some sort of innate skill he has.
(For those who haven't met him in person, HoffmanMyster is tall. Very tall!)

Ohhhh I see. Ok I retract my statement before then :D. Hoff's innate skill is magical.

Haven't decided which protocols I'll demo, but I'll take suggestions (if I have the keyboard, and I can get it working before the meetup).
since melvang and I now both have one, the sanyo MBC1000 would be awesome. I think I can get compatible jacks since the plug is based on a 0.1" pin pitch still widely available today.
Since this is a very useful skill for GH'ers in general, I would be very interested in seeing the video and slides when done. hopefully we can get up a group of people with lots of time to be able to convert more things.
If you guys pay for my plane ticket I'll be there! :))
Seriously jealous of the monthly meetups you guys run out there.
I want to start organizing regular meetups for the Boston area with Ming.

Wait what happened between Keycon and now that puts Ming in Boston? How long was I out?

He got a job in Boston and moved there to avoid the 2,591 mile commute. :P

See you all in 31 days.
-
I'll be there :D
-
I'll be there
-
I'll be there
With the latest model keyboard.io?
-
FYI, 1 week away :D
-
November has flown by fast.
-
One week from today!
FYI, I'll take a video of the things people bring to the meet-up, and then whatever presentation(s) happen in the conference room. All of that will go up on YouTube on a channel TBD.
With any luck the JD45 prototype PCBs will arrive by then. If so, I'll try to videotape a live build as well. Also, if the hoped-for reverse-engineering session happens, I'll capture that as well.
See you all there!

p.s. New pinball game is there now: Star Trek Pro (Stern, 2013) (http://www.thepinballcompany.com/star-trek-pro-pinball-machine.aspx#.VHntnH91PV4)
-
I'm going to show up again too :thumb:
-
I'll be there :D
Finally got my car back and feeling better!
Also really hoping the reverse engineering happens!
-
I'll try to be there!
-
Niiiiice.
Keyboard meet up at Rons with out all the "flatlanders" that attended Keycon?
Cali-Boyz in the house!
-
I will hopefully be there. This one is much easier to get to since I work just up the road! Is finding parking easy around the building?

There's a pretty big parking lot up front and the meet is on a saturday so I think you'll be good.

I'm a newbie on this forum, and I'm planning to attend this one.

It should be fun! I've been to several already and you get to see and try out all kinds of keyboards and meet some cool and brilliant people.
-
Looks like we will have a good amount of people there tomorrow. Pretty excited!
-
It's looking like I'll have to work tomorrow afternoon so I'll be there but clacking not so quietly in the back.
-
It's a good thing it's at 1. I need to get some sleep tonight :P
-
Hrm, there's a chance I might not be there now.
Despite multiple times of saying we're busy this weekend we just had to schedule Comcast to come tomorrow morning between 8 and 10.

That would definitely be fun! Looking forward for it.

Random question:
Providing I can make it tomorrow does anyone have a full size MX Blue or Brown board they would be willing to trade for a slightly dusty Model F 122? Looking to get my mom one as a christmas present since the stupid rubbercrap keeps dying.

Might want to get a new one if its for your mom. Never know what happens to some mechs behind closed doors. :blank:
-
I have a last minute request as well: can someone bring in a blue alps keyboard for me? I want to compare it with the switches on my Dinokidz keyboard.
-
I'll be bringing these keyboards unless someone has them covered: Model M, Model F PC-AT, Apple M0115 with orange Alps, Realforce 87U 45g EK, Realforce 87U 55g.

I would have been completely down with this trade.
Except my '85 F-122 arrived yesterday.
You should bring yours asyhow!

Can't wait to see the presentation by HaaTa.
-
And the meeting has begun. I've got video set up for HaaTa's demo and then presentation. We may also possibly capture a build or two.
- Ron | samwisekoi
-
AAAHHHH!!!!!!! I'm on my WAYYYYYYY!!!!!
-
90-minute talk by HaaTa captured. That will be followed by a hands-on demo with live (er, undead?) ur-keyboards.
Both will get rendered and uploaded ASAP, but ASAP != instantly.
- Ron | samwisekoi
-
New GeekHack YouTube channel is set up. (Well, basically set up.)
GeekHack TV

Anyhow, the first part of HaaTa's presentation is there:

That is the geekhackers.org channel. I'll talk to mkawa about conflation, but for the moment, we wanted a geekhack.org channel.
Alt least for today.

Thanks again Ron for hosting, it's always awesome.
And for the peeps that don't make it, you miss out on a lot of really fun, interesting, and educational stuff. Haatas monthly meet ups have really developed into something special and have value. Really need to try to put it on your calendar. Check this out for example: Andrew (Massdrop) said that the next meeting (at Massdrop) they will have a bunch of extra wallets from a drop. Imagine that, a keyboard meetup AND the chance to buy WALLETS, cash and carry, same time at the same place. How cool is THAT?
Hmmm....my current wallet is looking pretty janky...

As usual the slides are available online -> https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Zvt18JOc4ui4Dorg4z9MHi_CBT5VBR_FqwqcFJSJPEI/edit?usp=sharing (https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1Zvt18JOc4ui4Dorg4z9MHi_CBT5VBR_FqwqcFJSJPEI/edit?usp=sharing)
Hope everyone enjoyed the meetup :D
For next meetup jacobolous is planning on showing off more of his ergonomics research.
Please let me know if anyone wants more keyboard related presentations (ideas welcome :P).

Who left a U-Lock behind?
Describe it, and you can have it back!

Thanks Haata. One can never have enough keyboard related presentations.

Three of (probably) five videos are now on-line.

Am I missing something? The Youtube channel says there's no videos loaded :(.
-
The videos need to be set to publicly listed instead of linked access, I believe.

Hey guys an idea for the next meet up, what if we can scrounge up some extra parts and we all take part in a live build? Maybe grab an extra infinity pcb and some of those gateron switches and we build a keyboard with everyone taking turns soldering a few switches?
We could then have something where we pass along the keyboard to a member each month. The person could chosen out of a hat each time like a raffle. What do you guys think? I think it would be really cool to have something unique to our little bay area group.
-
Haha, that might be fun. Have some sort of keyboard kit donation each time, do a little introduction then solder a few switches.
I'll talk to Andrew from Massdrop about the first one, but I'd be open to any sort of donations for future meetups.
-
Now you're just rubbing it in.
-
Andrew thinks it's a great idea, we'll likely start with the next meetup.
Now you're just rubbing it in.
That just means you have to show up :P

Sounds like great idea and a good learning experience for the people with little to no soldering knowledge!

All four episodes of HaaTa's presentation are now up on YouTube.

His hands-on demo will be edited, rendered and uploaded by the end of the day today.
QUESTION: Is having these up on a dedicated YouTube channel helpful?
