Sold already, but AFAIK with Drobo they use a proprietary disk format, so if the device dies you cannot just stick the HDDs in something else to recover the data. Unless you buy another identical Drobo.

I would just DIY. you can get those mini ITX server MBs with SAS for like 12 sata drives. Just pile them up in front of a fan (or shell out $100 for an actual case) shove it in a closet and call it storage.
