Title: Have you car ever been keyed?
Post by: feng on Tue, 18 November 2014, 13:03:40
I thought keying someone else's car is an issue only happening in China because you know it's crowded and there's a huge gap between rich and poor. Some people just like doing that because they're jealous or just simply mean.

And then a few days ago my car got keyed on the left door. There are three bent lines of key scratch. I guess it happened at a parking meter while I was picking up my order in a restaurant. I just had no idea that this kind of thing would happen in the U.S.

I did a little google research and realized that this is also pretty common in the U.S. Some people are just mean enough to do this.

Just out of curiosity, how many of you ever got your car keyed?

It didn't happen while I owned it, but my last car was keyed at some point in its life. You could clearly see the touch-up paint covering a long, bent line spanning from the front to the back driver side door(s).

I don't think my car has ever been keyed, but I also delivered pizza in my current car for two years in high school. That car got the **** kicked out of it then. As long as it ran, I didn't care about any scratches.

Not really surprising about cars getting keyed though. There are some nasty people out there...

I think keying someone's car is probably one of the lowest things you can do. Most of the time these people have no idea who you are, what you do, or how much the car means to you. It's a quick and easy way of being a horrible individual and ruin something expensive of someone else's

If someone was to key my car, I honestly think I would cry. I inherited it from my Grandad last year and it means the world to me.

I think it's a horrible, horrible thing to do.

This would be my first thought.

But there is always the "bitter break up" interpretation:

Yeah it's common, quick and simple, otherwise they can break a rearview mirror or stab a tire.
Angry people, better if it happens to your car's door than to you.

just carry some sidewalk chalk, outline their car and wrote "meanieface parking" next to it with an arrow.

easy to wash off so it's not graffiti and gets the point across.

Choice of language is up to the user.

I'd be sad if my car got keyed, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. It'd still be fun to drive, and generally pretty awesome. I'd be sad because it'd take a lot of time to be able to get it fixed.

I think it's universal.  I don't park like an *******, so I've never been keyed.  I have had *******s park so close to me on my lunch break before that I literally couldn't get back in my car.  Those are the people I consider keying.  And you can usually tell that it's a pattern of *******ry with them since they have lines from many keys on their car.

It's a terrible thing to do, but I understand why people sometimes do it...like when you have a compact car in a compact space and someone in their "I have a tiny penis"-mobile parks next to you in another compact space and literally makes it impossible for you to get into your car or, if you somehow do get it, makes it impossible to get out without fear of damaging your car.  Or when you're in a busy parking lot and you see the expensive luxury car (that's probably a jag) that takes up four parking spaces because they don't want it damaged when they could have valet parked it instead.

Not saying it's right or wrong, but I totally get why some people do it.

I ended up selling the C not too long after that.. =/ Part of the reason was because I wanted it to have a better home than I could provide at the time; eg garaged.. I loved that car. It would be fun to get another one. =) I had a '89 golf before the C, and I really liked that one too. Both were a hoot to drive! =)

It was a big problem when I was in high school.  Mine and several of my friends cars all got keyed.  I think they used a screw driver and really leaned in while they walked by.  Mine was on the front fender of my Karman Ghia and was about 2 feet long and about 3/4" deep with much of it gouged to the metal and lots of chipped paint.  My buddies 55' Chevy pickup was fresh from the shop after getting Corvette underpinnings and drive train and brand new red paint - his was on the passenger door all the way to the headlight - also very deep and much gouged metal.  I think they were going after the nice cars on campus as mine and my buddies were a couple of the customs in the lot.  From that point on, we were able to park at the front of the lot next to the security guard.

I find it the lowest thing that someone can do.  I would rather have my tires punctured.  These a-hole douches are spineless nothings that can't confront someone in real life.

another "measure" fashionable here is "i park like a retard" signs that get stuck to the car parked in assholish manner.

I haven't personally but I know what you go through. I have parents who work in the auto collision and paint business and I know car paint isnt cheap. Its actually very f***ing expensive and we get people come over for their cars that have been keyed or vandalized it just sucks. Paying a bill for something some idiot decided to do. It's just not cool to vandalize peoples personal property.

I think this is basically the main motivation behind keying that I have witnessed. I have also seen a couple of people key cars when they get too close to pedestrians in crosswalks.

My car has never been keyed but in undergrad but I lived in the central "party area" and only had street parking. My poor rear view mirrors.

My ol' whip is a car I've had since I turned 17, a friend who has driven me through proverbial hell and back, a '96 GMC Jimmy 2-door. That Vortec V-6 has been the most amazing thing, even when the rest of the drivetrain has fallen apart around it. When I was in high school I was over at a friend's house for a slumber party and some ****heads came by and egged everyones' cars. Everyone who was parked at this house. And some got keyed. Mine got -very- keyed. They etched "**** YOU" next to the gas tank. They went lottery-scratcher on my tailgate on either side of the spare. Big scratches from front to back. I was and am still the most non-confrontational, meek guy around, and I've never made an enemy anywhere. I just chalked it up to high school assholism and shrugged it off. It's not the outside that matters anyways, it's how kick-ass Jimmy is in spite of it.
