Post by: Mesort on Wed, 19 November 2014, 00:40:14
Hey guys im trying to buy an noppoo choc mini. I found those on aliexpress but i keep hearing that some people say there are two versions of noppoo choc mini and one of them is bad. I dont know any details. I just want a pbt keycap one which one is pbt keycapped and original? What is the differance between older and new model and how would i know?

Aliexpress:http://www.aliexpress.com/af/noppoo-choc-mini.html?ltype=wholesale&d=y&origin=n&SearchText=noppoo+choc+mini&initiative_id=SB_20141118225551&isViewCP=y&catId=0

There is no version with PBT keycaps, they all have POM caps.

There are two new versions:

1. Non-backlit with lasered black POM keycaps.
2. Backlit wireless version with uv-painted milky POM keycaps.

The non-backlit black POM caps are better (thicker and nicer surface) than the backlit milky caps.

The older version has different printing on the keycaps and Pause instead of Home, otherwise they are the same.

Massdrop had a drop for each of the new type of boards, but they're over now. Not sure where else to buy from.

Be warned: The failure rate on these keyboard is pretty high afaik, mine came with very loose switches, that is many keys just fall of them.

If you read the answers carefully they stated that Noppoos have low quality in general. Your point is that there should be a source of "good" ones, which is unlikely based on the testimonies. Again, read carefully, otherwise, take your chances, buy one and see their quality by yourself.

I have one, the first version I believe (Black Pom keys no backlight).
If you ask me I think it's built like a tank, I had no issue with it and I played a lot of SC2 on this board, it got spammed hard and never failed...
Don't know about new ones though

There is no version with PBT keycaps, they all have POM caps.

Incorrect. The white choc mini comes with nice thick PBT keycaps. See this thread for example:

https://geekhack.org/index.php?topic=43054.0

The black choc minis use POM keycaps.

I've owned a POM one and a PBT one. Both were good, solid keyboards and I had no issues with them. The only issues I am aware of are operating system compatibility- I seem to remember reading somewhere that they had issues working on non-Windows operating systems.

You're right! Good catch. I forgot about the white version.

I've had the choc mini with POM keycaps and they felt great.
It has nice thickness as well as a nice smooth feeling to the keycap. The only issue i found was that the lettering wore off pretty quickly on the keys used most. If you don't have a problem with that, I would keep the suggestion open.
